PSB Speakers Image 7PT Floorstanding Speakers

PSB Speakers Image 7PT Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

Take the 6T's formidable array of drivers and add a powerful built-in amplifier for low frequencies and you have the genuinely awe-inspiring 7PT. It is a 3-way system with the two bottom woofers driven by the internal sub amplifier, and the third woofer used as a midrange speaker. It delivers all the slam needed to make the fullness of music and the subterranean effects of movies convincingly real. And because its own amplifier does the heavy work, it works well with moderately priced receivers and integrated amplifiers as well as separate power amps.

Strength:

Detailed, warm, great cost, excellent fidelity in all ranges, controlled powered sub, comes with steel feet for those that are afraid they might fall over. Fact is there are too many strengths to list here...you just need to listen for yourself. It doesn't take long to be sold on the PSB line.

Weakness:

With price in mind...I don't think there are too many. I did notice that it look a little bit of time to EQ these a bit to get them just where I wanted them, but I hardly consider that a weakness. All speakers take a bit of adjustment and it also depends on the room, room size, dimensions, and other various factors. These suckers are heavy too....about 70lbs of pure kickin' sound.

I have been a fan of PSB and their line ever since I first heard them several years back. I have heard everything from their lower end Alphas to their higher end Stratus and Platinum. I must say I have yet to hear speakers in their price-range that even come close. Most speakers that are comparable will cost 2-3X the cost of these. PSB has the aethetic quality that few speakers have as well and what I especially love is that you feel proud to own their speakers when they arrive. First, they look spectacular and are well-built so that anyone who sees them knows that you have a solid product. THEN you turn on your system and the moment people hear them....WOW. Of course, it's not as important what others say as much as you say about them...which most of the time you are speechless. I have owned my Image 7PT's for 6 months now and I am still amazed each time I turn them on how incredible they are. When I change out components or upgrade my other gear...it only makes them sound better and I fall in love all over again.

In the case of the Image 7PT's they have all the bases covered since they also include the built-in powered subwoofer, which is massive and produces some of the most prominent and clean low-end frequencies I've EVER heard. Most of my friends come over and think that all the bass is coming from the separate subwoofer and then I tell them that I don't even have the subwoofer on. Then they ask where all the bass is coming from and I simply say...IT's THE Towers!!! They almost fall over!

How am I driving the PSB towers? Well, I use my Pioneer receiver as my decoder, but I am using a Parasound Halo A23 amp to power the towers with AudioQuest GR-8 biwires for connection. I am using Tributaries for my analog connection. I noticed much more refinement when I changed from normal wiring to the bi-wires. By doing so there is far more separation among the ranges and the speaker seems more relaxed.

What else is there to say? Well, here are some examples of things i've played on them, which had staggering results. I use the towers for both CD/SACD playback, but also for home theater use.

Gold CD Tests: I played a few from Mobile Fidelity including Stevie Wonder's INNERVISIONS, Tears for Fears SONGS FROM THE BIG CHAIR, Alan Parsons TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION and finally Don Henley's BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST.

All of these sounded INCREDIBLE and did not colorize the source, but provided crystal clear detail and definition that only few speakers are capable of truly showing the difference that the Gold discs make.

I also played many SACD's and these stood out in particular....

Mobile Fidelity Mike Marshal's GATOR STRUT SACD
Elton John's CAPTAIN FANTASTIC SACD
Billy Joel's THE STRANGER SACD

There are tons of other great examples, but the PSB's never fail!!! I only wish that the big box stores like Circuit City and Best Buy would not only push speakers like Klipsch and Polk because people could easily get PSB's for the same price and have much better speakers.

Customer Service

PSB has incredible customer service via their website. They also have credibly authorized dealers who have a passion for the PSB Liine.

I HAVE THESE ATTACHED TO THE B&K REF. 30, AND 7250, RESPECTIVELY. I HAVE THEM SET AT SMALL WITH THE CROSSOVER SET AT 80 Hz., AND THEY ARE MOST UNEQUIVOCALLY AT HOME IN THIS RANGE. I HAVE ABOUT TWENTY HOURS OR LESS ON THESE SPEAKERS, AND MAN DO THEY SING TO ME. I'VE BEEN LISTENING TO EVERYTHING FROM DIANA KRALL, JOHN COLTRANE TO YO YO MA, J. GEILS BAND TO METALLICA. SPEAKING OF METALLICA, I JUST FINISHED LISTENING TO MASTER OF PUPPETS. I HAVE NEVER BEFORE EXPERIENCED DAMAGE INCORPORATED TO THE EXTENT (EXCEPT, OF COURSE, WHEN I SAW THEM LIVE) OF WHERE I WAS ABLE TO DISCERN, QUITE EASILY, THE PULSE POUNDING NOTES OF CLIFF BURTONS (GOD REST HIS SOUL) EXTREME BASS EXECUTION. GRANTED, I'VE GOT QUITE A FEW DEAD PRESIDENTS TIED UP IN CABLES, AND OTHER NECESSITIES (ONES GEAR IS THY CATALYST TO RENDERING SWEET MUSICAL PERFORMANCE) BUT I AM HERE TO SAY THAT, FOR THE MONEY, THE 7PT IS A BARGAIN^3. YOU DON'T HAVE TO HOOK THEM UP TO B&K TO EXPERIENCE MUSICAL PERFORMANCE FROM THESE SPEAKERS; THEY WILL RESPOND NICELY IF YOU FEED THEM ADEQUATE AMPLIFICATION. I, HOWEVER, CHOSE TO INUNDATE THEM WITH IT. ACTUALLY. AM IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING A CITATION 7.1 FOUR CHANNEL AMP., AND AM GOING TO BRIDGE THOSE BEAUTIES. THEY'RE AN EXCELLENT SPEAKER. Strength:

Very balanced sound, strong,t ight bass, good for music, Solid build, front vented

Weakness:

Power cord not detachable, very deep cabinet (placment can be a problem)

I have owned these speakers for about 4 mos now and have been very happy with their sound. I listened to many others before deciding on the Image line with the 7's up front.

Initially the sound was a tad harsh in the mid-range but this disappeared over time. I am constantly amazed at the sound quality and clarity, especially when listening to audio tracks. I listen to a lot of instrumental piano and guitar music and the sound is very detailed. Each note is smooth and distinct.

I particularly like the powered woofers. Despite the advertising and sales reps statements, the built amp/speakers are no replacement for a quality subwoofer for movies. They are however very good when listening to music. I have mine setup so that my external subwoofer only operates during movies. For music the 7's bass is strong and deep, but not overbearing or boomy.

No speaker is perfect but these provide a very good balance for music and movies. I would definitely recommend you include them in your listening tests.

Strength:

Smooth, clean, balanced, and very detailed sound. Bass is tight. Great for music, excellent for home theater.

Weakness:

None for the price, you would have to compare them to speakers costing at least twice as much before you could begin finding fault with these speakers.

I have been comparing speakers and reading reviews over the last couple of months, yet never felt compelled enough to take any of them home. I recently stumbled upon reviews for PSB Image line and went to check them out.

I was first impressed with how smooth and clean the 7pts were when compared with the Klipsch's harsh and in your face sound. I was able to hear details that I hadn't heard before. They make you forget that you are actually listening to speakers. I like the fact that placement is not as important with the 7pts as with many others.

For home theater the 7pts are perfectly balanced with the 9c and 2bs. Movies come to life like never before. Sound comes from every where.

I have only had this system for a couple of days and they do require some break in time. I can hear them smooth out as each day goes by.

I purched the whole system (7pts, 9c, 2bs) for $1390 from Brett Interiors. For the price I paid I challenge you to find a better sounding system.

My system:
PSB 7pts
PSB 9c
PSB 2b
Velodyne CHT 15" Sub
Pioneer Elite 35tx
Sony 650 DVD player (soon to be replaced)
Sony 53" hi scan digital TV

Strength:

Fantastic musical sound, easy set up and placement.Ability to be placed in any location in a room and sound good

Weakness:

The worst instruction manual I have ever seen.Missing hardware, poor quality control.

Allow me to first eloborate on the stengths and weaknesses I mentioned. These speakers sound fantastic. They have an open airy sound that does not seem to suffer much even with poor placement(against a rear wall). The bass is tight and powerful without sounding like it has been artificially enhanced.Due to the absolutly useless instruction manual I failed to connect these in the most efficient manner. These speakers should really be connected to the preamp line level output which the rear panel provides an rca connect for.The difference in sound quality between this manner of connection and the conventional manner of using the speaker outputs is staggering. There is sound coming from places I did not think possible.Even my retailer had them improperly connected and when he heard the difference in the connection methods he was as amazed as I.PSB provides a stabilztion bracket that is effective but would be even more so if I did'nt have to chase down the missing nuts at my local hardware store.Every driver was loose and had to be tightened, easily done with a phillips scewdriver but inexcusable on any product in this price range.I auditioned these speakers improperly connected and they still sound better than the six other loudspeaker pairs I listened to.If you can find these speakers(properly connected of course)listen and be amazed.
