Strength:
Midrange presentation. Audiophile quality sound on rock as well as jazz and classical.
Weakness:
So good they make other people jealous. Obviously Joesixpack has no clue. The things he cites as weakness are some of the exact things that make this speaker great. He says the midrange is "veiled". I''d say they have a slightly forward and very natural sound to the midrange. It''s what I love about them. He says the highs are "cold" which is a description I''ve never heard associated with these speakers. The bass which he also complained about is tight and fast and relatively deep due partly to the size of the cabinets, which he also finds fault with. The finish on my Cherry (real wood veneer) is very good and the corners are protected by black aluminum, not plastic. |

Strength:
remove the bass driver and you have a terrific coffin
Weakness:
thier strength is thier weakness my own personal experience with these boxes lasted about 6 months, and in all that time i just could'nt warm up to the golds sound; the bass was o.k., the midrange was too laid back and veiled, and the highs were as cold as winter, not to mention the construction is more in tune with 600$ boxes, then the soaring retail price. these speakers blow! there are many more refined and/or musical sounding transducers out there, and well worth your time to listen. Strength:
Very clean ballenced sound. Will play detailed music, rock''N''roll, or whatever you could want to listen to with controlled athority. I like using them in my HT system as well. Just be sure to get a good CC or the Golds will dominate.
Weakness:
For the price??????? Can''t be beat! I do find the Plastic binding posts cheap and iritating. Not a problem with banana plugs though. Dont go cheap on the Amp to drive these. I love my Gold''s. I''ve had them for 10 years and still they amase. Now I know they ''upgraded'' the designe a few years ago, I can only imagine the Gold''i is the same or better. Things I''ve learned over the years though-is that the Gold''s require lots of good clean amperage. These days I''m using an Anthem MCA20. This is a very good example of an AMP that can properly drive PSB Gold speakers. Similar Products Used: B&W 800''s (I thingk that was the model#) PSB 500''s |

Strength:
Full spectrum sound...no need for a sub. Great depth and imaging. High quality construction. Awesome power handling.
Weakness:
Need high current amplification and wire to carry the current. I no longer own my PSB Stratus Goldi''s thanks to some thieves who cleaned me out.I replaced them with some B&W Nautilus 802''s which are a better sounding speaker,but.... I got a deal on my B&W''s through a friend and they still cost FIVE TIMES AS MUCH!!! Let me tell you they sure don''t sound 5X better. The B&W''s are a great speaker but dollar for dollar I don''t believe there is any speaker at any price that can touch the PSB''s......Period. I used to work in the audio industry for a high end retailer and had the opportunity to take home and listen to more equipment than the average guy. The PSB Goldi''s embarrased many an expensive speaker, some costing 3 or 4 times as much. Here are two very important facts about the PSB''s.... One......YOU CAN''T USE CHEAP ELECTRONICS TO DRIVE THEM. It amazes me how many people try to drive these speakers with some cheap receiver. These speakers need CURRENT. Drive them with a Bryston amp, or even the Bryston integrated amp(or any quality high current amp.) and you will hear all that you paid for and more. Second...Bi-wire them if you can so that they can draw the current they need. I wasn''t using expensive cable but I was using a double run of 12 gauge wire. If you can''t bi- wire then use the heaviest wire you can get. I think people don''t give these speakers the opportunity to sound the best because they are so reasonably priced they tend to get paired up with mediocre electronics. If they were $5000.oo a pair people wouldn''t hesitate to drive them with the electronics they deserve!!! Those of you fortunate enough to own these speakers(excluding the SOB that stole mine). the next time you consider upgrading your speakers.....don''t...instead upgrade your electronics. You won''t regret it. There will be an amazing improvement and you will realize just how great these speakers are. Thanks for the opportunity to express my opinion........Don. Glad to see that after some less than 5-five star reviews (mainly for the strong bass), people are giving more positive praises to the Gold/i that they deserve. Gold/i is highly praised by John Atkinson at S'phile, and it has made to the B Class list consistently since 1991 when the original Gold series came out. They are so natural, free of any coloration, many megabuck hi-end stuff cannot compete against it in this area. The rich bass should not be a point of argument -- it all depends on how one SETS IT UP! Proper placement and room treatment are critical. Mr. Paul Barton, the brillian but humble designer, claimed that in terms of traditional box design, "it does not get much better" than the Gold/i. He is most likely right -- these are true value-loaded hi-fi speakers at a great price! Anything to significantly better the Gold/i will cost so much more that the law of diminishing return shall punish anyone without a very very deep pocket. Highly recommended!!! |

Strength:
Price/performance - could not find anything to touch it at twice the price, build quality, imaging
Weakness:
Havent really found any (still looking, just can't find any) I just got the Gold-i's 3 days ago, and right out of the box they sound unbelievable - I can only imagine what they will sound like in a few weeks (and with better cables). I'm amazed at their ability to perform well with any kind of music - solo acoustic guitar, piano, rock, jazz, even classical - quite impressive. And like the previous reviews, the imaging is incredible - play around with the placement of these speakers - you will not be disappointed. If you like the idea of the band/artist sounding like they are sitting in your room playing for you, you owe it to yourself to check these out. Strength:
Low price, high quality build, excellent mid-range, solid base
Weakness:
Big, high end in question I decided to get Gold-i for about 2 months ago after listening to all above speakers. For my ears, Gold-i doesn't beat every single category, but overall, it does best in this price range. I am very pleased with the mid-range and base even with my Yamaha 2095. It's little weak at high end. I may need a good separate amp to drive it. Since I have these speakers, I have to spend at least more than 1 hour a day to listen to them. They are a great speakers at very reasonable price. Highly recommended for 1.5-3K price range. Strength:
good build quality, solid and heavy, good price
Weakness:
needs lots of GOOD power to drive them at higher volumes You will not find a better speaker for $2400 and even a lot more than that. This speaker is one of the most satisfying well balanced that I have ever heard. It is not fair from our friend BEE to post more than one bad review of such a fine set of speakers. Bee, you told us once that you were not happy with the GOLDi's ,thats fine, but by lowering the over-all rating of the speakers AGAIN is not fair to the unbias person who is shopping around. I'm not bashing you, but you and your "cool best friend", must be using a Lincoln arc welder for a power amp, and a Coleman porta power for a pre amp, because I to am using a Yamaha pre and Carver tfm-55THX (375w/ch into 8ohm). Let me tell everyone right now that with this setup my ears thirst for the sound. With the GOLDi's its like having a whole new cd collection, I find myself rewinding the music all the time because you hear discreat sounds that just were not there before. As for power handling, clean and clear at levels way higher than whats good for your health, and I have yet to melt, burn or smoke anything like what Bee had described in his earlier posting. Bee, if you are listening to these speakers at such high levels that you are melting drivers in them, you must have lost your hearing by now so how can you give good reviews on any speakers. |

Strength:
tweeter somewhat godd kinda not really
Weakness:
well umm... lots first of all do you know why these speakers come from the sony store?... because they're sony quality. this presents a problem because if sony was a word the definition would be: small and very breakable even before which is recomended. I believe that whomever owns these speakers would be able to tell they were not thought out just by looking at the case'ing it warps from room temperature after longer periods of time. you may also realize that the plastic trim is stapled on using 1/2 inch staples. this trim is there to hide their shoddy cutts and glue mishaps.
