Strength:
Excellent Control of Music, Reproduces sound with excellent timbre, soundstage, vocals are stunning, and excellent classical music reproduction
Weakness:
None so far It is unfortunate that people post reviews that do not trully reflect this wonderful speaker. The many years of production of this model is testament alone to it's overall quality, and superb sound reproduction. |

I wish there were editors on this site so they could eliminate postings from the kiddies like Dolly below. These are 5-star speakers. Period. This post is to help balance out the pinheads. |

Strength:
Clear accurate mid-range, wide and deep sound stage, very good bass response.
Weakness:
Not the last word in bass response. Need a lot of power to perform at peak I have auditioned all of the above brands and though excellent products, they do not match the PSBs for sound quality and value. For several months I compared these speakers and ultimately realized that these speakers were the most natural sounding. I call really tell that Paul Barton is a musician. Here in New Orleans, we have a lot of live jazz bands and I frequently attend concerts. Many people do not realize that you can get use to the sound of "speakers" and forget what live music sounds like. This speakers are closer to live sound that 90% of the speakers that I have adutioned. Unless you are willing to spend several times more, you will not fine a better value and performer. NHt 2.8 are great speakers as well as long as you are in the sweet spot. If you move away the sound stage collaspses. Paradigm though good is just not in the same league. B&W certainly is excellent speaker. The B&W DM 604s actually sounded clearer for lack of a better term. But in terms of natural, musical sound, and soundstage they were not equal. It took me several weeks of listening to realize this. I originally planned to puchase the B&W speakers. Finally, I made the decision with the help of a favorite CD.With the psb, I could hear the singer move, it sounded natural, and the sound was project from the speaker. With the B&W, yes it sounded good, but you could tell that the sound was coming from those big black boxes. PSB lets you forget about the speaker and concentrate on the music. Strength:
Low-end weight and definition. Neutral, smooth midrange. Attractive (dark cherry) finish.
Weakness:
Binding posts too large and closely spaced. Rubber tips on alternate feet for wood floors too soft. The Gold i's sounded great right out of the boxes, even before an adequate break in period and proper placement. With all the talk about this speaker's low sensitivity and hunger for power, I first hooked them up to the front channels of my Harman-Kardon PA5800 home theater amp to see how they would perform with a modest power source. The PA5800's 110 watts into 4 ohms was sufficient to drive the Gold i's to quite loud levels in my 19'L x 15'W x 9'H room without signs of strain. Unless being used in the largest of rooms, I don't understand some of the complaints by certain persons of this speaker eating up power while providing few SPLs and the rear panel becoming hot. Next, I hooked up the Gold i's to the Classe CA-300 amp in my dedicated music system, where its use is intended. The Classe amp very easily drove this speaker to high levels that were more than I could tolerate for more than a short period, again without strain and exhibiting excellent control. After extended listening, the Classe amp was only warm to the touch. With CD after CD, everything sounded great, with neutral, smooth midrange and clean highs, accompanied by the Gold i's detailed, solid bass underpinning (read, subwoofer not required). On some recordings though, I did find the treble almost too laid back. The Gold i's are very attractive in the dark cherry finish and in my opinion, the magazine photos I've seen don't do justice to these fine speakers. If I must criticise anything, it is the binding posts and feet. I find the binding post shafts a little too large and closely spaced. I had to spread my Kimber PostMaster spades with pliers in order for them to fit under the binding posts. Because of the close spacing of the posts, there is less than 1/4 inch between the spades -- a bit too close for my comfort. I may switch to locking bananas. I also found the rubber tips on the threaded feet for use with hardwood floors to be too soft. They became torn during speaker placement. In spite of these minor quibbles, I find the Gold i's to be great speakers at a great price. |

Strength:
Audiophile sound without the Audiophile price, I bought these speakers in there piano gloss black for $2,4000.
Weakness:
none, considering the speaker's incredible value. Strenghths and weaknesses aside, overall very pleasing to listen to, with a very high entertainment value. Also doubles as great theater speakers. Speaker location is absolutely crucial for these monster towers, but if you have the space for them they will fill up entire basements with rich beautiful sound. Give these a try if your in the market for the best possible sound at a modest price. Engineered to be very transparent speakers, adding little coloration during sound reproduction. They will compliment well recorded CD music, and destroy any respect you might have left for your tape player. A little more mid range would be nice, however Im not complaining. Construction quality is top notch, the $300 dollar finish upgrade to piano black is money well spent for a long time investment. I have nothing but good feelings about my investment, so please give these a demo. PSB is a great company that has had great techinical support for me when needed.
