Rega Jura Floorstanding Speakers

Rega Jura Floorstanding Speakers

DESCRIPTION

The Jura is Rega's all purpose floor-standing loudspeaker. The bass reflex design works just as well with digital electronic music as it does with acoustic music and can perform very well at high volumes. The Jura is also a great choice for integration in an AV system where it will offer a higher musical sound quality than many AV dedicated loudspeakers.

Strength:

dynamic base, good price

Weakness:

Bright tweeter, midrange not as sweet as cheaper rega alya

I've tried these speakers back to back with rega's smaller alya.

The highs are much too crisp for my liking; even after breaking in extensively, there's still a raw lispy character. Midrange is less "warm" and coherent than alya, probably due to larger driver. Slight nasalness at times. Base is well defined, tight, a little loud at times.

Alya is much easier to listen to in long run, except for lack of low bass.

Not too good a match for my system (naim nait3) but will most likely do better with rega amp/preamp setup.

Linn Keoso will probably be a good alternative.

Weakness:

Midrange could be somewhat more refined

Here is another sad story:
I first heard these Rega Jura in a shop. I was not really looking for something new, but I am always curious and was looking for something with deep bass. So I heard these floorstanders and was captured by the well balanced sound, without any harshness, with deep yet well controlled bass. I came back and listened again 3 or 4 times, in a time frame of 4-5 months, even comparing back to back to my beloved Elac 305. Finally I decided to go for it.
Bad surprise: The box came a few days later with the 2001 model, having a slightly different look (logo saying just REGA & grille fixed onto the woofer's screws). OK just a cosmetic lifting, said the man from the shop. And then, back home, I found a sound not being neither as open nor as balanced as the ones I heard in the shop. So I went on running them in, thinking the difference comes from the different amp, room, CD player and cables. But it didn't improve significantly.
So I went back to the shop to compare my 2001 against the 2000 year model, and there it was obvious: they changed the tweeter !!!!!
The new tweeter is an impregnated tissue but that seems heavier. The sound suffers: the mid-high transition is definitely less refined with ugly colorations and unpleasant resonance effects. The man from the shop also noticed the difference and, very professionally and kindly, proposed the exchange giving me some nice speaker cable for the inconvenience. Thank you, by the way.
So, WHY THE HELL does a supposedly serious company such as Rega play doubtful games like that ??? They are already very un-open in terms of technical information ...perhaps to leave themselves the freedom to change things, and not always for the best !!!???
So, there I am, glad to have grabbed the latter model 2000 and quite disappointed about the Rega company technical attitude.

Strength:

matched my desire for bass, detail and clarity and also my wife's "not an ugly black box" decision

Weakness:

positioning needs to be right, sensitive to cable

my wife thought the others were ugly so the salesman wheeled out a set of these and my wife said "ohhh they're nice, if you're (me) happy with these we'll take them"

played; madonna, red hot chilli peppers, the corrs, finlay quayle, lenny kravitz.

yep... the salesman got the money :)

i have it at home wired up to a Audiolab 8000lx amp and audio note CD2 player, decent cabling throughout.

The "soundstage" was very very good. For the size and price they have ooooodles of low down grunt and can deliver the detail and treble of modern recordings at loud volumes.

i have even spoken to the engineers at Rega to see if they could do me a custom cabinet (no grille mounting holes) but unfortunately not :(

Strength:

Excellent no comprimise sound, not lacking in any department

Weakness:

The drivers and speaker terminal plate are glued so you cannot fill with any sand, sound bytes etc.

After using the above with a rega elex amp instead of the orelle i was very impressed i also was using royd doublet speakers which were excellent but had reliability probs so i exchanged under warranty. These were the only speakers to come close to the royds and even surpass in some areas. Whatever you do please do not use cable talk speaker cable with these(3.1 bi-wire or 2.1 concert) They ruin the sound the best cables in my opinion are Audioquest Indigo+ DNM Reson and any Kimber. Every item in my system was auditioned on its own and can assure you tomy ears i have excellent synergy which is what its all about. The sound is much more than the parts aand the fact that rega keeps cropping up is only testiment to there excellent products..

Strength:

Clear articulate midrange

Weakness:

slightly boomy base, bright tweeter.

After living with a Jura for 3 months, i feel i need to balance out the other reviews with one that's not too optimistic. The tweeter on the Jura is way too bright, and gives an irritating lispy quality to the sound. Audition this speaker extensively first! The smaller Alya by comparison has no such problem, and is a much better speaker (though lacking in base). It's a transmission-line design, not like the simpler Jura. Not good fit for naim gear. There are rumors of a newer redesigned model.

Strength:

Actualy sound like music!!

Weakness:

Are boomy close to the wall, easy fix (duh)

I work in an audio store and can borrow anything any time. I bought a Planet and a Mira simply because we dont stock much Rega. I didn't want to work all day and then go home to the same stuff. Plus its hard to find room for it being a Rotel, Marantz, Classe, Linn, Krell, Mark Levenson dealer. Actualy the bigest reason is thet there is virtualy no profit in Rega.
The Mira is a wonderful amp and worked great with the B&W's. I almost bought them, and still want to from an astetic standpoint. But I'll tell you I'm not going to. Because in a Rega system these baby's SING!! there is a synergy with this system that is very hard to match at any price.
I am buying another amp to bi-amp. I like to listen at all volume levels and these speakers will blow you away at LOW VOLUMES!! I am ading the extra amp to tighten them up a hair at piss the nehborhood off volumes...
People talk about sound stage and all imaging and all that B.S. if you are the kind of guy that wants to set up a chair in a triangle with you speakers and listen for exactly where the pan was at on the mixing board, then these are fine, hell there great. Not the imaging kings like Thiel but great. The thing is its scarry how a system that is all voiced and designed to work together has a quality that sounds like Live Real Music. It's the same with Linn, Naim, Levinson-Revel, and Rega.

IF YOU HAVE A PLANET AND A MIRA AND ARE USING ANOTHER SPEAKER, DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TRY THESE!!

Strength:

la basse est très chaleureuse

Weakness:

Strength:

Clarity, delightful sound, charming cabinets (thank you dar ;-)

Weakness:

First pair had to be returned due to a manufacturing error

Good speakers to really start hearing what is going on in the music.

These apeakers were the result of 2 hours of concentrated listening - they glowed in pretty well very department. The detail they produced against other similar speakers (e.g. QED Q35) was so obvious as to be untrue. The test piece (Messiaens Tuaranglia Symphony, The Scottish Chamber orchestra on Chandos) gave up a raft of detail and revealed the Piano part for the first time. I knew it was there from the score, but now I could hear it!

The shortcomings are that the bass could be a little better but for their size, I have no complaints.

I like them, but I am willing to bet that not everyone else will. They're like that. Listen and decide, but give them a go.
