There is no perfect speaker but there are speakers that make you reach deep into your pockets to aquire. My first serious speakers were Ambience Super Slim 1800's that unfortunately proved too big for my listening room and had to be replaced with something more suitable. After extensive auditioning, and I do mean extensive, I replaced them with Dynaudio 1.3SE's and for a long time lived very happily until I was offered an opportunity to purchase store demo Revel Gems at a hugely reduced price. It's no secret how good the 1.3SE's can be if driven appropriately and to improve upon them in a significant way is not easily nor affordably achieved. The Revel Gem is not a cheap upgrade, even less so if you include subwoofer and stands, which are imperative if you are to achieve their full potential. A must do for any owner is to replace the gold plated jumper straps with copper wire, even cheap copper wire is better than brass and you will be amazed at the difference it can make to the total presentation, your results will vary depending on wire used. I have not heard them bi-amped finding them an easier load than my 1.3SE's, I have not had the need to try but it is a juicy thought. Summing up, the Revel Gem is a significant upgrade from the Dynaudio 1.3SE's and for the price, so it should be. It is better in every way except tonality which can be addressed to a large degree with replacement jumpers and quality subwoofer. |
