Strength:

Still going strong after almost 30 years! ! ! ! ! The highs are incredible, the multiple horns just scream. Even my Walsh tweeter equipped Infinity WTLS's are no match.
The 16" woofers get the job done occasionally i will let my son hook up his Ipod for supervised rap music sessions. If you have the means to really drive these things your neighbors will definitely know when you feel the need, to make your ears bleed.

Weakness:

If there are any it is not apparent to me, although I would not reccomend these to someone living in apartments as eviction may result from their use.

I walked my wife out to her car in our driveway one Sat. morning, while giving her a hug before she headed off to work I noticed my neighbor was having a garage sale. There was 2 sets of stereo speakers amogst the tools and furniture.
as I rubbed the sleep from my eyes I recognized the Sansui speaker grilles, I hurried across the street and there they were SPX 9000"S with a $50 price sticker! ! ! ! ! ! He hooked them up, They worked, Here's yer fifty bucks. took them home to my Marantz 2275.................Had the cops at my house by 10:30 A.M.
Had a new years party my brother in law bugged me for a solid hour to sell him those speakers. NO WAY he offered me $300 and I told him NO. Despite having the garage door closed the cops were called out 3 times that night and someone threw tomatoes at my garage door at 1:00 A.M. I set these up in my back yard for a party and drove 3 blocks away and it sounded like a live band was playing. My 75 watt per channel Marantz drives these things hard enough to induce hearing loss. I couldn't imagine a better speaker for my application. The occasional Lynrd Skynerd fix, or when someone forgets who's got the Baddest tunes on the block.

Good Luck these were not purchased new by me.

Strength:

Great bass. clear mids, great top end. 100dB efficency.

Weakness:

None.... absolutely none

Wow! I've been into hi-end audio equipment for over 10 years. I've spent an ungodly amount of money on various pieces of equipment. These speakers... believe it or not sound better than my Legacy Audio Classics. In fact they sound so good im looking for another pair to replace my classics with. I run tubes. The bass is there, mids are great, and the tweeters are crisp and clean. Bass drums are the most realistic i've ever heard. Whoever said these speakers are weak in bass and arent good for rock and roll was wrong.

Oh my god, these kick ass, the bass is strong, and the sound is crisp and clear. They were also in really god condition. The guy had 2 sets of these speakers and was desperate to sell. If I had known how much I liked it I would have bought both.

Strength:

Great clear sound, and they don't look too bad when you take off the grill...

Weakness:

None really. Average weight for this size speaker.

WOW - saw these at the local Salvation Army, looking for a cheep kitchen table (I am a student...) These were listed for $25/piece. I though i could spare that much, and maybe they are good speakers. Boy, was i in for a surprise. These speackers put my newer $200/piece 300watt speackers to shame. Next to professional speaker equipement used by my friends band, I have not heard better quality sound in a long time. origionally i was thinking about selling these for a profit... My old speakers are now on e-bay, and i'm keeping these babies.

Strength:

Clarity, dynamic range, and neutral balance are awesome. They can handle anything from rock to classical, country to jazz, opera to bluegrass. Amazing crossover design. Ageless quality.

Weakness:

Grill cover easily cracked or split Large and heavy (wife wants to sell them every time we move)

I have owned four of these speakers since 1983, when my father gave them to me as a gift shortly after my wedding, along with a Sansui Quad receiver and a Dual quad turntable, which also still work great. The dynamic range is awesome, and the clarity is unmatched by any speakers I have heard under $5,000 per pair. I am considering a surround sound receiver to replace the Sansui. Does anyone have a suggestion for a center speaker to go with them?

Strength:

Absolutely fantastic !

Weakness:

Hard to find

These are the best speakers I've ever owned. When I first saw them, I thought - very ugly wooden grill probably sound bad too. But then they guy who was selling them turned on his old rinky system.

As soon as the sound came out of the speakers, I was in audio heaven !!! Open, accurate, deep base, airy, warm, etc... think of all the good adjectives and you hit the nail on the head.

I had bought them immediately for around $100. Sad part: Years later, I had to leave them with my brother when I went to work overseas. Now years after leaving them behing I'm getting them shipped to me. That's how good they are. Shipping is going to cost me about $175 (more than I paid for them).

Does anyone know where I can pick up another pair? Does anyone have the technical specks of the crossovers?

I actually picked a pair of these up for $50 about 10 years ago. I've never looked back since! These are built like a brick shithouse! SOLID! Consisting of a 16" woofer, 6" mid, 2 horn tweeters, and 2 super-tweeters, these things are loud, powerful and clean sounding. There's also a 3-way knob on the front panel underneath the cover to adjust the super-tweeter setting. I've received a lot of comments on how good these sound. Does anyone know how much these cost when they were new? Anyone know where I can find another pair!?!?

Strength:

Strong, Clear sound unparalleled by anything produced today for consumer use.

Weakness:

Heavier than a b!tch!

I have owned the speakers since they were new. Purchased them at the Base Exchange at Eilson AFB, Alaska. These things have travelled from Alaska, to Okinawa, to Berlin and then to Texas. The hardwood construction has held the burden of the moves with nary a scratch. In the early 90s I bought the Bose Acustamass Mark 1. No comparison. I sold the Bose shortly after and went back to the Sansuis. These speakers where part of my original stereo system and have doubled as my bass amp and as my computer speakers (should hear the neighbors b!tch when I would kick the volume up and start playing Quake and Quake2 through these babies!). I have had NO stero components last this long. I will buy any set I find in a pawn shop without a second thought regardless of condition. The response, and depth of sound through these babies is unparalleled, but I'm repeating myself.

Strength:

Accuracy, efficiency, and now exclusivity

Weakness:

Next to impossible to replace/repair cones

My uncle who served as a career Marine picked up two pairs of these monsters overseas along with a quad receiver and quad reel to reel as apparently was the rage in the early/mid seventies. I get one pair as a gift when I was 19.

I am a proffessional bass guitarist so bass response is very important to me. I must say that these are the most accuarate speakers I have ever come accross. There was a time when the looks of them were growing old to me so I went to audio shops to see what was floating around. All the same, basses don't like real basses, same with drums.

One last thing. These suckers move serious air. Here's a testimonal. Like I said, I got these as a teenager, and would not stress these like this today. Had the Sansui's set up in a studio with my band. We were recording and needed accurate monitors for mixdown. My drummer at the time used Tama roadstars which are arguably the loudest unmiked drums on the planet. You hit the toms and your eyes blink as a natural defense mechanism. I'm mean LOUD. I walk in the studio unannounced and he's using the Sansui's to pump a Rush cd so he can rehearse. The speakers were easily overtaking his best efforts to break his drum heads! The kicker; all pumped through an underpowered 80 watt receiver. That's efficiency.

If you find a genie and get three wishes, blow one on these suckers.

Strength:

100 dB efficiency, crisp highs

Weakness:

real cypress wood grills can chip easily

These are highly efficient crisp sounding speakers that I purchased new in 1980 for $440/pr and still sound great today. The only slight shortcoming I have found is a little lack of bass from the gigantic 16" woofer but the unbelievable 100 dB efficiency and crisp sound from those two tweeters and two supertweeters more than compensates for this. Great sounding speakers that can really deliver.
