Helped a friend go shopping for a complete system. Selecting speakers was the longest part. We listened to speakers from$500 - $1500.. These Signets (5 models in this price range. IMO they don't get the credit they deserve. This model is their
top-of-the-line - slim ported floorstanding 2way, with an 8" poly woof/mid and 1" aluminum dome tweet. Kind impedance
curve (always > 6 ohms), sensitivity about average (~88dB/1W)bass goes down to 45 Hz or so. It's a jack of all trades, doing
everything well and nothing bad. Octave to octave freq. balance is very smooth, no irritating qualities. Midrange is smooth,
imaging is good, (slightly laid back) bass is remarkable for a 2 way, (if in small to medium sized rooms, not big ones), treble is
sweet, (un-metallic to my metal-dome sensitive ears). Could play quite loud without the bass muddying up the mids. (Not
talking 1812 here) Sounded good on large-scale classical, vocals, rock, and jazz. Excellent! Weak point compared to much
more expensive speakers was it seemed to lack the last level of detail. 4 stars.

Strength:

Neutral mids and highs

Weakness:

None for the price point. Lacking absolute bottom end.

I am an audiophile on a Soundesign budget so when I went looking for speakers I wanted the absolute best value. I had listened to a plethora of different speakers in every price point. When the time came to buy my wife and I actually drove back and forth between the two local hi-fi shops comparing two different speakers. The finalists were the signet SL280 and a ?Fried/Freid? speaker. The Fried, being a transmission line design, had outstanding base response but in the end we went with the Signet. I (and my wife) found the overall musical presentation to be more musical and neutral than the competition. Not long after I got my speakers signet changed the SL280 from a speaker that requires about a 16" stand to a full floor standing speaker. This was suppose to improve the bottom end. I understand the the mids were somewhat sacrificed by this change.
Associated components:
Kimber 8TC cable
Rotel Amp and Pre.
NAD 5000 CD
AR turntable

The signets offer an unusually listenable speaker without treble grain or other annoying factors. They also really shine with tubes. One caution though. When I brought these home I was given some "really nice" bi-wire monster cable. The sound was thin and harsh. I switched to some Tara Labs (I think) and the difference was amazing. Later I switched to my kimber cable and I should be set for life as far as cable goes. The value rating should be 7 or 8 stars for the $450 I paid. Comparing the signets to others in its class, they are a strong 5 star.
