Strength:

Construction, price, looks, high ohms, high efficiency.

Weakness:

Grills have cheesy mounts.

I am perhaps speaking too quickly but cannot hold back. I sold my N805's to check these speakers out after hearing them once in a shop. The construction is beyond any criticism and really is better than the N805's. I have let them play almost continuously since purchase and they did sound quite harsh for some time. Now they are oh so sweet.

I do not look back at the 805's at all. These 5.0s sound better than the N805's. The treble is smoother, the midrange seems even more grainless, and the integration with my subwoofer is seemless. Bought B Stock for $595 and still can't believe they even compete with $2000 805's. A true bargain.

Strength:

Wonderful on vocals, piano and strings.

Weakness:

Grills are "cheap"

These speakers are simply wonderful. Vocals are supurb, neither bright nor dull. The speakers do a great job with pianos and strings. For the money, they are champs. If you are in the market, check them out. I can't think of a better bargain. As often posted, they need time to break in. Don't judge them until you have given them that time. You will be well rewarded with much enjoyment once they break in!!

Strength:

Superb imaging, soundstage, clarity and speed. Woderful dynamics. I've never heard Patricia Barber sound better. Nice to look at with the matching stands.

Weakness:

As expected with a small speaker, will not crank out a bunch of bass. I'll get the matching S-10 subwoofer for that.

Overall, I listened to some pretty good monitors and decided on the 5.0s based on what I heard. The others were all very nice, but none was clearly better than the 5.0s in anything but bass, and I will make that up with a the matching S-10 once I decided I need to. The best overall sound came from the 1.3SE, but at almost four times what I paid for the 5.0s (including matching stands) I could not be happier. The clarity and ease with which these speakers play is just stunning. Imaging, soundstage, cool but very fast and liquid sound are just wonderful. Won't knock you sox off with slam and bam on heavy rock & roll, but play with an inner detail that is exquisite. I got rid of a pair of Aerial 6 floor standers as I could never get them to grow on me. And the 5.0s sounds better just out of the box. Purchased from a very nice physician who moved up to the Soliloquy 6.5 after only two months. Consider myself fortunate to have found at such a reasonable price for so wonderful a sound.

Strength:

Very detailed but smooth (especially the treble). Taut bass. Very good imaging; kind of surprising. I feel the strength of these is the midrange. Especially vocals and piano music. Unbelievable stands. Best spikes I have ever seen. At home with solid state and tube.

Weakness:

Could go lower but what do you expect for a 5.25 woofer. Can sound a bit congested when played loud.

Boy do these things sound like trash out of the box. I was thinking I got a set of veneer clad lemons. Things changed after quite a bit of use (did not keep track of the hours. I really like the refined smooth sound. When I have people over they usually stop talking and just listen. Very exquisite "out of the box" sound.

Strength:

beautiful solid construction. Outstanding midrangeYou would be hard pressed to match this kind of performance for $600.00.

Weakness:

At this price, fuhget about it!

You know that feeling you get when you buy something that is really satisfying? Maybe because it's well made, or its affordable, or it meets your expectations for functionality and value. That is precisely the feeling I get everytime I look at these splendid speakers.....and that's before I play any music.

My listening room is far from ideal, but it's quality products like the Soliloquy 5.0's that get me closer to a truly satisfying listening environment.

The room is 12 x 13.5 x 10 and is highly reflective with plaster walls and hardwood floors. I knew that before I could fairly evaluate the speakers, I would have to tame
some of the nasty reflections and bass modes. I began by treating the floor first with a large rug, As for the wall treatments, I placed a 4' x 4' panel of RPG Profoam stacked three deep, on the front wall between the speakers. That set me back about $120.00, so for the side walls I decided to try some of the DIY acoustic treatments available at www.audioasylum.com.
I am currently building bass traps for the corners and will eventually purchase some "commercial" diffusors for the wall behind the listening chair. This dead-end (acoustic foam) live-end(diffusion) approach is pretty standard for acoustically treating a room.

Anyway, back to the Soliloquys since that is what this review is about.

I placed the speakers using the Wilson Audio Setup Procedure on www.tnt-audio.com. They ended up being about 3 feet out from the front and side walls, 6 feet apart and 6 feet from the listening chair, forming an equilateral triangle.

And the sound you ask? Remarkably sweet, smooth and detailed with an impressive soundstage considering the limitations of the room. Since the bass modes tend to smear the sound slightly, I expect that the soon to be finished DIY bass traps will only add width and depth to the soundstage and further reinforce the outstanding imaging of these speakers.

Acoustic music is bewitching through these speakers. They are able to resolve the most minute details in a recording provided the ancillaries are up to par. Do yourself a favor and audition these.....and yes, those big heavy stands, they make a difference.

Strength:

Broad frequency range. Looks

Weakness:

None

I have a modest system. But I bought these speakers based on the reviews of consumers and other audio shops. If you favor jazz, rhythm & blues, and acoustic music, you'll be pleased with the output of these speakers. I'm aware of the 500-hour break-in period these speakers require, but in my case, right out of the box, I was impressed. I'm looking forward to the time when the 500 is reached!

Strength:

Great sound, great build quality including the stands, open and airy, especially on vocal, and pianos. String bass actually sounds like a real string bass. How do they do that?

Weakness:

Could be a long break in period. I think mine are still coming around.

I liked these so much the first time I heard them, I started putting together a second system just so I could own a pair of them. Mine may still be breaking in, and I'm not finished or satisfied with my set up, but that's my fault and not the fault of the speaker. These are great small speakers easily on a par with any of the small ones from B & W, etc. They don't turn kick drum into a small cardboard box and they do recreate a convincing string bass which is no small feat for a speaker of this size. I consider these to be a great value and well worth investigating if you're looking for a small monitor that kicks major butt!

Strength:

great overall sound

Weakness:

low bass

i bought these for around $750 used from a seller on audiogon.com. initially, out of the box they sounded like crap but after getting them right on their stands + placing them properly they were phenomenal, only lacking in lower bass, which is extraordinary given the size of the woofer. listening to johnny cash's american recordings is scary, like he's right in the room. for what i paid, nothing can touch them. their website is quite helpful too.
