Strength:

They have apsolutly no limitations in sound quality and volume (on a good amp) for the home user!

Weakness:

The weight and the fact i had to carry them 2 miles and catch the 351 bus with them, as they weigh about 15kg each they arent very easily transported, oh and yeh, u cut my hand on the floor spikes lifting them up just! These are just minor inconvenience that you can live with for the amazing-ness of these speakers! So basicly no weaknesses, if u like black! (although even a black-hater would love these if they apreciated good speakers!)

I got these speakers for £80, a bargain, they are birwirable, 90w, 25mm silk dome tweaters, magneticly sheilded, have an impendace of 6omhs and a rear bass port you can get your hand threw!(i was put off by them not being 100w compared 2 mission m72's, they may not sound as classey as the specs of some bookcase speakers, but, the specs mean very little to the sound quality) The extra volume of the cases and the floor spikes coupled with the amazing frequency range produce speakers i have had no distortion from at all and ive been runnign them on a crap mini-system only single wired, they have great capabilities, i have seen them on a £2000 power amp in the showroom and they rocked, kicked the ass off £499 tannoys!!

Strength:

Precisie, strong, smooth sound, at a ridiculously good price.

Weakness:

Sony badge (deserve something classier), black only finish?

These are special speakers. Lovely clarity combined with strong bass and, best of all for me, sweet voices. I'm told that though badged Sony they are actually a British design (unnamed company) and they certainly have that classic sound that I'm more used to hearing from something like KEF or Spendor. I almost didn't get them because of their being floorstanders, but they are actually smaller than the monitors (on stands) they have replaced, and provide much better bass (without getting boomy in my mid-size room). All in all an absolute bargain.

I really wish I had these speakers. They beat the Mission 702e s into a cocked hat.
Better than Mission 702e s I can't stress that enough.

Strength:

Well defined sound, biwirable, floor spikes

Weakness:

May be too big for some, grill design

I went for the 176E's after doing an a/b comparison with a newer model, the SS-MF400H. I thought these were better in almost every way, even though then are now a model 6 years old.

Hooked up to my 60 wpc Digital amp, the sound is powerful, well pronounced and amazingly clear. Listening to one of my favourite songs, by Eagle-Eye Cherry, the piano and trumpet solos are so well defined its amazing.

The cabinets are attractive, although some may find them a little too deep, and build quality is first class.

The speakers are bi-wirable, which I will be doing in the near future, and come with heavy duty floor spikes, which definately help.

The only thing I dont really like is the way the grilles curve out from the front - its an unneccesary little gimmick - they would look much better with a flush-fitting grill.

But its the sound that counts, and the 176E's are well ahead of the competition, even in a tougher marketplace, 6 years after their launch.

Astonishingly good value for money. Bass is deep and solid with realistic scale, rich midband and smooth and sweet treble. It is able to create expansive and exciting soundstage. All in all, this speaker is a great all rounders. Thumb ups to Sony.

Specs: floor standing speaker with spikes, size 74x21.5x25cm, 60-90W, 6 ohms, bass reflex enclosure, gold plated biwiring binding post.
If you're in the market for a low cost floorstanding speaker with great sound, this is a good one. It has a rich detailed sound that is found in speakers twice its price. Bass is strong but not overwhelming , and clarity is enhanced with biwiring.

A good speaker for what it is worth (

Strength:

Value, sound

Weakness:

Size, appearance

Bought new as part of an all-Sony setup. Very good sound for the money paid. Currently used monowired, at some stage I might upgrade to some decent bi-wired speaker cable. The SS176Es have contributed to transforming the sound of (particularly) my CD collection. My only (mild) criticism is an aesthetic one - in my small room I could probably have got away with smaller, wall-mounted speakers.
