Strength:

Brilliant budget bookshelf speakers. UK designed and with a very British sound; Sweet, refined and lovely detailed midrange. I think of them as a poor man's Rogers. They weren't expensive new and don't have a audiophile snob brand name so can be picked up for peanuts. Better built than most of the budget speakers of the time. If you are putting together a budget, small room system for gentler music, these are difficult to beat.

Weakness:

There are plenty of speakers that will hit harder and lower and sound more exciting. Not the most detailed treble.

First off i think there is some confusion here as to what year these speakers came out, i bought mine back 1993 they had just come out then. So anyway yea these are some top speakers mine are now 21 years old and still look new not a mark on them, over the years I've listen to many speakers of the same size as these sonys and most pail in comparison the plastic cone construction is a good idea and really adds to how the sound is delivered they sound awesome i mean ive never had mine up to breaking point and nor will i but they do well with a bit of drum and bass.

Speaker construction is a nice idea, it's not the usual compressed chipboard it almost looks like mdf it's real solid and weighs a ton also you have proper metal binding posts at the back that can even cater for banana plugs all in all for the money you cant go wrong, you can still buy these on ebay for reasonable money they are well worth a shot and would suit any retro setup and certainly made to last

Strength:

Very small size, cute design, pretty honest sound reproduction, UK style "sweet" sound, price.

Weakness:

They simply wii not fill a large room, the bass is exellent if you accept that from the speakers of this size you will not get any.

These will work fine in a suitable room, not too big. If you are into classical music, and will use them as a kind of near field monitors, these are for you. They can sound pretty amazing. Work better on the stands ( shall I add? ) PS: I do not use them any more, and they are my multimedia computer speakers - that siutes them very well.

I have the SS126E: identical to the '86E in all but size.
These speakers are good. They have quite a nice, accurate sound - not particularly exciting, but "just right". The bass is not too heavy or sloppy. The mid/high can ocassionally be a bit overbearing with harsh beats, but sounds nice with mellow vintage soul/funk.

They will suffer if you try to force them, I managed too knock out one of the woofers within the first week! But all credit to UK Sony Centres, they gave me a new pair straight away. Basically, if you put too much power through them (I used a 100wpc Sony TAF520e - no frills meaty UK design) then the bass causes the cones to hit their end-stops.

No doubt there are better speakers at this price (KEF Coda's/Missions/B&W), but if you settled on the Sony's you wouldn't be disappointed.

Specs:size: 32x19X24
impedance: 6 ohm
sensitivity: 85 db
power: (max. input) 70 W
woofer: 13 cm
tweeter: 2,5 cm (soft dome)

Clean, sweet and fluid sound by these sony´s made in the
U.K.
They´re great all rounders for the money ( around 150 U.S. $)
Treble and midrange are very open and detailed but bass
could be more substantial.
These speakers are musically involving but don´t go very
loud, so rockers should keep out !!
Anyway they´re a real bairgain !, everything you could
or should ask for the price.

Strength:

Compact size and pleasing exterior. Nice and clear sound.

Weakness:

A little weak bass.

Good as home theater front speakers. Does it quite well with an active sub. Sounds good with quite many music styles (with normal volume settings), too.
