Strength:

tight sound, high power handling but dosen't tax the reciever for power. Poly somrthing woofers(durability)
nice treble and not to piercing highs. Good bass for the size without distortion.

Weakness:

Need a sub (not a real weakness)

Nice speakers especially for the price, I got them for $260 a pair including a center channel and two rear surrounds,(both sony ss voice matched). AT VIDEO ONLY ... Compare them to jbl and you might reconsider but your going to pay for it. But I would give a good recomendation on these sonys.

Strength:

Good sounding for price. User modified for much better sound

Weakness:

Base boomy, mid and high range weak

A friend of mine purchased a pair of SS-MF515's. He is using them as a the rear channel speakers for his home system.

Although the speakers sound pretty good, we were dissapointed with the mid and high end clarity of the speakers. We also thought the woofers were a bit muffled sounding.

Read on!

We took the speaker appart and we were shocked to find no stuffing and a crossover which consisted of a small, cheap
looking 1 inch square board consisting of one small, inductor and two small caps.

We replaced the crossover with with a Parts Express
(www.partsexpress.com) 260-210 3 way crossover for $13.90.
It crossover at 800hz and 5000khz with a 12db roolover. (Linkwitz/Riley)

We were absolutly amazed at the improvment in sound quality. The bass was much clearer and the mid and high end was
much cleaner and fantastic sounding!

The difference it made was like night and day. In fact, the sound of the speakers rivals a set of high end home built speakers that I have just finished.

I realize that the sound of speakers are subjective. But the differance was incredible.

You may want to consider trying the above crossover. It wasn't that hard to replace and rewire but you better know what you are doing. I did not destroy the old crossover, I just totally replaced it and saved the old one in case we need it later.

Godspeed!

Strength:

Nothing that I can think of

Weakness:

Wish I bought em a long time ago..

These things are a steal for the clarity they produce. They're not even hooked up to my new reciever yet, and they sound great. I bought them even though people said there wasnt enough bass, and trust me, Im a big fan of bass , and these sound great. Especially for the money

Strength:

Great speaker for the price. The response is excellent.

Weakness:

You can not complain about these for the price you buy them at.

For anyone wanting to spend under $250 for a great pair of speakers, you have to buy these. I was very hesitant at buying these because of the price, but they are great.

Strength:

Don't let the price deceive you. This set of speakers is awesome specially when matched with a subwoofer. Very happy with the product. Most bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Not really a big deal but the cabinet was made of particle board as oppose to solid wood.

Just want to appreciate everyone's review of this product. This website really help me make my decision. Also, Mike Rootz is a genius. I had the speakes for a week and for the most part was satisfied with it. Then I saw Mike Rootz's suggestion of replacing the crossover (Part 260-210 from www.partsexpress.com $14.00 each). To me, it made a big difference. The highs were crisp, the mids was a whole lot clearer and the base had a whole lot more range. It was an easy process. It took me an hour and a half from removing the speakers, wiring and mounting the crossover, and placing the speakers back. The hardest part was mounting the crossover, plus I soldered all the connections. Night and day difference specially when you crank those babies up. I highly recommend this product with or without the crossover change..

Strength:

Ok sound for the price, but was lacking midrange and highs somewhat until I performed the crossover modification. Now it sounds incredibly sweeter.

Weakness:

A cheap $.50 cent factory crossover built into the cabinet.

For those who own a pair of these...

PERFORM THE CROSSOVER MODIFICATION!!! You'll be glad you did.

For those who only have $260 to spend on a pair of speakers and can solder (which is really easy), buy these and the crossovers.

Crossovers can be obtained at www.partsexpress.com
Part # 260-210 (13.95 ea.)

As reviewed on this page by Joel Jaro on 9/15/00 @ 5:37am and Mike Rootz on 8/9/00 at 4:26pm, the difference in sound is quite noticeable. If you're happy with your current sound, then don't do a thing, but I truly noticed a big difference in the realism and balance of the overall sound. Originally the midrange was weak and the highs were ok until the modification.

For those of you who do perform the install, don't get confused when it comes to wiring the tweeter, midrange, and two woofers to the partsexpress crossover: the + of the tweeter wires to the T label of the crossover, and the - of the tweeter goes to any one of the 3 terminals labeled 'C' (for common ground). The + of the midrange wires to the M label of the crossover, and the - of the midrange goes to any one of the 3 'C' terminals. When it comes to the woofers, wire both + wires to the W terminal, and both - wires to any one of the 'C' terminals. I only had a little difficulty figuring out how to wire up the woofers because Sony's crossover had two sets of terminals for the woofers, whereas the partsexpress one only had one set for the woofers. The Sony crossover places the woofers in parallel with one another, and wiring them up as I described above does just that. Any ?'s just email me and I'll be glad to help.

Strength:

Price

Weakness:

a little bit of tweaking needed for sound depth and clarity.

nice bang for your dollar, but if you want something that will not leave you wishing for more pay a little extra for something better. I enjoy these very much but they will be gone soon. I'm kind of a compulsive speaker buyer, so I'll always be getting another set of speakers. I do suggest going to a store like Video only to listen to the speakers before you buy them.
