Strength:

Very good bass that keeps present in low volume listening, without adding any bass where there is none.
Dynamic. It's just a very nice speaker, making listening music fantastic. Somewhat forgiving for old or not so good
recordings. less neutral and less 3-dimensional than my old quad 63 esl, but more dynamical and without the lack of bass, much much better than my old spendor bc1, the older
tandberg and old kef's that i knew well, and i think it is better than the jbl tik6, but maybe a bit less neutral than
the jbl tik10. At their price it seems a good deal to me, with which i can live some years to come.

Weakness:

needs a good amp. spoken voices could be a bit more neutral.
maybe best in not too small room.

plays very well with my mcintosh 6800, lacks some dynamics
in its bass when i tried a marantz pm 16, too coloured with the marantz pm14, is nice with brinkman integre.

I don't have any feeling that i miss something , as i had formerly with my spendor and my quads.

A speaker to buy blindly if you are a music lover if you can afford a powerfull amp.

you can find better but count on spending twice as much.

Greetings from a happy user!

Strength:

Power, dynamic, accurate, 3D image, good looking

Weakness:

No.

I have used Tannoy D-700 for about 6 months. It is the best I have ever had. Compared to B&W nautilus 802, which is about double D-700's price, I choose D700 over B&W 802.
D700 is the speaker with big impact. Powerful amp. is good.
Powerful yet accurate. Not only use ears to listen to music, your body can also feel music. Tannoy is one of the best!

Strength:

Musicality, dynamics, base extension, dual concentric design and most important the WAF (The wife approval factor - they are a nice piece of furniture.

Weakness:

No apparant weakness, although a smaller high end speaker such as the Proac 2.5 will provide pinpoint, razor sharp imaging better than the Tannoy's. Also, the Tannoy's are better suited for a larger room.

I'll preface this review by identifying the product - Tannoy D 700's. I'm sure the person who posted the poor review on the Tannoy's was really trying to review his new Radio Shack speaker's! This speaker weighs in at a hundred pounds each and is impressive just sitting and waiting for the show to start and what a show it delivers! The sonic signature is very close to it's big brother the "Churchill's" at three times the cost. The Churchills have an impedance modulator which allows for use of single ended tubes. (Arguably the best speaker at Toronto's audio show) The D 700's however, require a high current, quality, solid state amplifier. This will provide tremendously enjoyable, tight and fast base extension. The dual concentric speaker provides a lush, open and transparent sound stage. Do not be too afraid of the horns! My old Klipsh Forte speakers are still used for home theatre; however they are not in the same league as the Tannoy's. To tone the horns down a little my electronics is noted for warmth. Although there are better speakers out there; unfortunately, they are considerably more expensive and necessitate even more expensive electronics. I've listened to many other speakers but the Tannoy's really get my MOJOE working. In closing, I wish to thank those on this site for helping me decide on equipment especially Dave in South Africa.

This takes the form of a "long-term" review - I have had the D700's for almost 3 years. The ancilliaries have ranged from an Audiolab 8000A integrated, to an Audiolab 8000A/P with the A as pre-amp, to A/P in biamp configurationm, to my current setup consisting of Classe CP50/CA100.Source has migrated from Rotel RCD965 to Theta Data Basic+Progeny to latest setup of Theta Data Basic II + DSPro Prime IIa.
Speaker cables started with Esoteric Audio PA101 and now are Cable Talk Concert 4 (both in biwire config).
What has consistently amazed me about the D700's is their ability to project a rock-solid soundstage of almost palpable 3-dimensional depth with lateral image stability second to none. This was there even when using the 965/8000A.
Another area of particular strength lies in their "dynamics" - they really have "slam" in large doses. This is true at virtually all volume settings.
The factory-supplied spec sheets shipped with the units claim a sensitivity of some 93dB/W at 1m with a maximum SPL of 118dB (also at 1m). Living with them has demonstrated that these claims are not that wild. The Classe CP50 has a digital volume setting readout which normally hovers around 04-05 on a scale that goes from 00 to 60 and this produces a room-filling performance. Push the volume setting up to around 20 and the cat evacuates it bowels, the wife drops dishes and both kids start crying - its LOUD!!
What is very pleasant is that the sonic signature or timbre does not alter much between very low playback levels and roof-raising ones - the balance remains virtually the same.
The room currently housing the system is not ideal - approximately 5m square - but it has a reasonably irregular outline. Carpets, furniture and tapestries have helped to tame some of the room resonances, but the amount of low frequency energy pushed out by the D700's can overpower with certain disks. They do provide "port bungs" to limit the low frequency output, but I have found that they have a tendency to shut in the sound.
The quoted frequency response at +/- 3dB is from 35Hz to 30KHz and the lows on certain disks (organ and synthdrum particularly) don't contradict the lower limits. The only slight criticism I have about the D700's is that the highs can sound a bit bright with certain poor recordings. One area to be wary of is the load they present to an amplifier - although their nominal impedance is quoted as being 6 ohms, the load is reactive and does dip quite low. The Audiolab 8000A's current limiting circuit used to get a fair amount of exercise.
Listening, as I do, to a wide range of musical genres ranging from Classical (Symphonies, Piano Sonatas/Concertos, Violin Concertos) via Jazz (most types) and New Age to Rock from the 60s/70s, I have found the D700's to be close to that ideal - A Master of All Trades. They handle everthing from the gentleness of the second movement of Grieg's Piano Concerto to the raw power of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" with equal ease.
After living with them for almost 3 years and using them for, on average, 2-3 hours a day, I can wholeheartedly recommend them to anybody as an essential "try-before-buy" that should be on the list.
