Strength:

Vast improvement over most cheap speakers. Will make most mass market equipment sound pretty good

Weakness:

Constricted treble. Bass can tend to get boomy.

A very good pair of speakers for mass market equipment. They tend to tone down the brightness associated with mass market receivers. they actually sound better with bright stuff. When used with high end gear, their constricted treble is revealed as compared to more neutral speakers. Bass can tend to sound boomy when driven hard - they lose coherence. I owned these for a year and was pleased with their sound in my second system, because they toned down its inherent brightness. They look more expensive than they are because of the cherry finish in front. Not nearly as forward and revealing as they paradigm minis. No comparison to the dyn's (not fair because of the price).
For just over $200 used though, they are not a bad deal.
Also consider Aegis 1, Paradigm minis or mini mK 3 used,

Strength:

balanced, clarity, bass for the size

Weakness:

bass can get muddy, soundstage could be bigger

There are better speakers for more and some speakers at the same price do certain things better (better bass with B&W a little tighter with NHT super ones) But for the price, these are darn good speakers for both music and ht. Very balanced, non fatiguing, accurate but warm mids and highs. The bass can get muddy on complex and bass filled music but very good warm bass for most music and surprisingly low for ht applications.

Definitely needs good receiver and source to hear it's good side. Perfect for jazz and vocals. Can't give a five because of limitations but five for value definitely.

Modest system includes:
Nak AV7 receiver
Sony DVP 530 player
Sony kv32s66 tv
M2 upfront, M1's for rear, MC center
Tributaries spkr wire
straight wire interconnect (looking for something better)

I got my M2's 2nd hand, 6months old! £90, bargain. i think that is about $180(us), i will keep them as long as other upgrades allow as they ofer performance way above that of other speakers at higher prices, well done tannoy, top marks.

I bought my Tannoys sometime in June, and since then feel that it was one of my best buys so far. My system comprises of an Pioneer set (amplifier A304R, cd player PD104R and tuner 204RDS), VLS interconnects and Monster Cable CX-4 loudspeaker cables. With cd's of Alanis Morrissette and Tori Amos, this combo really gets you into the music, even if your set is a long way from the real stuff (Marantz, Arcam or Audiolab) just like mine. With "Jazz at the Pawnshop" (Propius), the atmosphere is tangible, and the instruments sound as if your room is extended into the jazzclub. Play a dance track (Ministry of Sound or the like) and the M2's will fly - bass is tight and fast, making sure the rhythm gets a grip. With "Strange cargo III", the soundstage is both wide and deep, and the effects come out sharp.
Although the limits of the speakers are not as far away as with more expensive designs, the M2's make the most of my budget equipment and I think they will withstand future upgrading easily.
These speakers are capable of sending tingles down your spine, and cost as little as 140 pounds (~ hfl. 599,--) a pair. This is a five star product - no doubt.

I purchased the near field studio monitor version of the M2's, known as the Tannoy Reveal. Although a little different looking; medium red front panel (baffel) and no grill, the speakers are virtually the same. The Reveal can be picked up at various music stores, such as Mars Music (www.marsmusic.com). Tannoy has an active or internally amplified version as well. Called the Reveal Active, its drivers are each powered by their own 50-watt amp. The Reveal Active is distinguished by a medium blue front panel and a cool looking blue power status LED. Cost from Mars Music: Reveal $339.00 a pair and the Reveal Active’s are $699 a pair.

I listened to all thee speakers; the M2, Reveal, and Reveal Active and found the sound to be much the same between the three. Aside from this I generally agree with most of the reviews below. I would like to add that to really enjoy these speakers you need a sub-woofer to carry the bottom octave, thus reliving the Tannoy’s of this duty.

Strength:

Nice reviews, probable improvement on the rubbish that a lot of us (including me) listen to most of the time.

Weakness:

Muddy, shut-in sound.

I have a pair of large stand-mount Bang & Olufsen Beovox 3800s. I read loads of reviews about M2s and thought they'd be better than my B&Os. I went to a shop and heard some M1s. I thought they were pretty good, certainly more "real" in treble and atmosphere than my B&Os. I bought M2s instead. Got them back. Dynamically my B&Os wiped the floor with them. No contest. They were gunk, toilet, excrement, turd. If you people are listening to this stuff and think it's really good you haven't heard nothing yet. Yes you could be in a club or a bar and hear a good PA system and accept that your kit at home is never going to be anywhere near as good. But that's partly because you're listening to vomit like the M2s. Get real : if you want to cruise at 38,000 feet you can't use a crop-sprayer. Yes, the M2 is the crop-sprayer of loudspeakers. Even a 20 year ole KEF Corelli beat these. I have yet to hear a better system than my own (with B&Os), but that's only because I'm used to listening to rubbish and don't know any audio enthusiasts to compare to. But really M2s are crap compared to (I'm sure) any decent old-school 3 way. I think that US$100 is this product's true worth, especially as it's made in Eastern Europe.
