Strength:

Relaxed yet detailed. Price -staff discount aka trade price ;)

Weakness:

Could do with the potential to go just a bit louder... just another 3db (just for those party and/or "can''t get to sleep, so lets dance to loud music at 3am" moments)

Amazing overall speaker. I''d tested out a few speakers in the 400 - 600 pound bracket, and although the tannoy''s weren''t the most immediatley impressive, they were the ones i could have just kept on listening to. I didn''t notice anything special about them straight away, except this desire to have my music playing through them, and total lack of desire to audition another pair. I''m not going to go into the whole weigh them down with sand/shot, and run them in for a few days, cause it''s been described at length in a number of reviews, instead i''ll focus on the far more pleasant part - listening *note you don''t have to turn them off when filling with sand, even if they are lying on their sides, just don''t turn them up too loud, or filling becomes difficult (oh, what lengths i go to for that little extra listening time :D) I''m quite laid back generally, and these speakers compliment my listening habbits perfectly. Both the dedicated listening time, and background music can be enjoyed to their full. With background music, the sounds seem to drift in and out of conciousness, leaving you capable to do anything you care to while listening, whilst appreciating the music also. For the proper listening times, just turn the volume up, and everything just appears clear as day light, yet not isolated at all, you can hear each part seperatley, but they''re not too bright not to anything... just right really. The same music you were listening to as background a little while earlier becomes a spinning array of synths and basslines in your head. The bass is tight, crisp and this is especially appreciated in the electronic music i''m often partial to, there is so much detail and thought in the bass line of a good track, it''s a pitty that lesser speakers lose this detail first. There''s no way to really describe the sound of these speakers, you have to listen to them... i suppose the closest you could get in words would be that the sound ''is'', that is to say the sound is not coming out of the speakers, it''s not just there, or anywhere in particular for that matter, the sound isn''t overwhelming and no aspect of it stands out much, there''s a general roundness, the sound quite simply ''is''. And it is beautiful.

Strength:

Smooth , Low distortion

Weakness:

Upper mids a bit forward

This is an excellent speaker for its size. I needed something a bit more compact and less fussy about placement than my Alons. The R3s fit the bill. Most people would like this speaker. Tannoy doesnt make any junk. After a break-in of about 100 hours things smooth out and listening becomes addicting. The only complaint I would have would be that the upper mids are a bit forward. I have rather mellow components and cables so this is no big problem. If you are interested in a compact state of the art speaker that has a big sound then check these out. Be sure to audition first to insure compatability with your electronics.

Strength:

Good balance and midrange.

Weakness:

Very loose bass, and much too laid back.

These speakers can handle plenty of power, and produce a warm, full sound, if a bit lacking in precision and clarity. The bass, while there is plenty of it, is particularly loose, and not at all accurate with a poor presence. There is nothing that grabs you about these speakers at low volume.
I use an Arcam Alpha 9 amplifier and an Arcam Alpha 8SE CD player when listening to these, which I found are too smooth to be used with these speakers. I would only recommend these speakers to people who like a warm relaxed sound and want to compensate quite sharp or bright sounding equipment. The speakers also need plenty of space to really open up the sound.
These speakers are much too large and don't really represent value for money.

Strength:

Definition, smoothness, warmth

Weakness:

haven't found any yet

After listening to many more dynamic speakers, such as products from Dynaudio, kef and Castle, I was taken immediaately by the laid back but detailed nature of these speakers, I have only had them for a few weeks and they improve daily with the base becoming more accurate as they bed down. Such is the nature of these speakers that my favourite tracks are a revealation in detail that I have never noticed before. I do think that they need a warm and powerful amp such as the Perreaux E160i that I use to get the full potential of these great speakers. I would recommend them to anyone who likes a warm accurate and laid back sound, you will not tire of these units.

Strength:

Sound Imaging, Warmth, Balanced from Bass to Highs, impressive fit and finish

Weakness:

none

I have an open floorplan with hardwood floors. Two retail stores were willing to let me take home the PSB 4Ts, and the Tannoy R2 and R3 so I was able to test these speakers on my system. The 4Ts sounded grainy and up-front without much imaging or detail, but they did sound loud if that is the sound you like. The R2s had GREAT midrange vocals, but were lacking on the Bass and Highs in my house. The R3's sounded the best in my open listening room, with excellent midrange and better bass and highs than the R2s.

After I purchased the speakers, I decided to add an NAD C270 to my NAD 740C. This filled out the highs and lows and slightly detracted from the detail in the mids, but overall the R3's with the NAD C270 they have a good detail, imaging, balance and warmth. On some tracks, the imaging is almost 3-D.

I bought my speakers off the dealers floor, hence I was able to save $200. When I tried out the R2s, I put about 7lbs of shot per speaker, but I did not notice any change in the bass. I have not added any shot to the R3s. I have connected the speakers with 12 Ga. wires with banana plug.

If you like you rock music loud, try the PSB 4Ts. But if you like classical, Jazz, vocals, in addition to rock, try the R2 and R3. I feel like I'm hearing things I never heard before.

Strength:

Well balanced sound. Good looking.

Weakness:

Not on the budget side.

These speakers compared well to some others in the $1500 price range. They had good balance and soundstage (?).

Strength:

Very neutral, well-behaved, excellent imaging

Weakness:

A bit pricey. Not for large rooms.

A bit pricey, but compares favorably against other
makes in this class.

Very neutral, almost unnervingly so. I say this because
these speakers really highlighted some deficiencies in
my receiver (I was using an Onkyo home theatre receiver
to audition them). When connected to a high-quality source
and amp (Rega Mira), the R3s really shine. (The Onkyo,
like many home-theatre receivers, tend to lack good
bass amplification and can come across as "thin").

Vocals are clear, imaging is stable and deep even at high
volume levels with lots of bass. Music is very detailed
but pleasant -> there's little of the sizzle or hiss
that some people mistake for high-freq detail.

Bass is not bad --> fairly well-extended but I suspect
the roll-off is a bit higher than the advertised 39Hz.
More important, however, is that the bass is neither
boomy nor chesty. Good low-freq detail.

In general, music has good attack and imaging is very
tight across the frequency range, even at high volumes.
These speakers definitely need good electronics, but
their transparency means they're suitable for a wide
range of music. Personally, I prefer 'uncolored'
presentations, so these fit the bill.

Of course, the R3s are overkill for home theatre. I have them coupled with Tannoy surrounds and center channel,
and a Velodyne sub. Music in movies, especially those
that take advantage of 6-channel audio, is awe-inspiring.

Note that these speakers don't really fill large rooms
very well. My HT/listening gear is stuck in a rather
large living area (29' x 47'). The speakers themselves
are located in the middle of the long wall and the lack
of a nearby corner is noticeable. Without the attendant
ambient reflections and bass reinforcement, the sound
seems a bit thin. To impress myself, I move the whole
setup to my (much smaller) study every now and then and
listen to something.

The speakers are beautifully constructed. They
have real cherry-wood veneer, and their tall, slim
elegance provides some warmth to the black brushed
aluminum that pervades my HT gear. The speakers are
bi-wirable and have gold-plated posts that accept either
bare wire or bananna plugs. The enclosure is rigid and
fit & finish is excellent. The units themselves are
very heavy.

Despite the price ($1500/pr), I think these speakers
represent good value for those with modestly discerning
ears. I have a hard time listening to other, lesser
speakers now. They may initially be more
impressive with big, boomy sound, but the Tannoys are
not fatiguing in the least. With tight, well-balanced
frequency response and excellent dynamic range, they're
an ideal choice for serious listening.

I get really P*****d off at idiots like Kenny boy here messing up the ratings for good products because they know little about the product or how to use it.

You blew the drivers and you are blaming the speakers? Either you:

A) Live in an aircraft hanger

or

B) more likely drove your amp into clipping and destroyed the Tannoys.

I have the R3's in a largish(nearly 24' * 20')room, biamped with NAD C370/C270 and your ears will bleed before you destroy the Speakers.

ADVICE - go away and waste other peoples time rather than the readers of this board.
