Size ? But who cares Back in 1994 things went a bit out of hand, but all in a glorious way !!. In those days I was looking for a pair of Tannoy Little Red Monitors. Only to find out that these speakers were very rare on the second hand market. After looking for some time I received a phonecall from Frits from Hightech Hilversum. He told me the he was expecting some Tannoy's of which he thought were SRM-12 monitors. Being already considerable bigger is size then the LRM's, I thought: what the heck, let's just do it. So I made an appointment with Frits to come and look and listen to the Tannoy's. When entering the small shop in Hilversum the SRM-12 turned out to be not SRM-12’s at all, but M1000 monitors (about the largest systems available at Tannoy in those days). With a height of 1030mm, a width of 722mm and a weight of 60kg each not exactly what you would call small. After listening to the M1000 monitors it took me about 3 nano-seconds to decide that I would take these monsters home. Whow what a sound !. Thank you Frits ! After "junking" some furniture to make room for the Tannoy's the M1000 made their entrance into my living room and have stayed there ever since. Never having regretted it for one second. Reading the specification of the M1000 you can't help smiling as they have been written with a typical English (Scottish) feeling of understatement. Being rated at a very, very modest 120 watts the maximum peak SPL is stated at a mind boggling 121 dB !. In very gentlemen-like fashion the people at Tannoy warn you that "this kind of sound levels can cause permanent hearing damage". When listening, all the technical bla-bla translates into an effortless urge to reproduce about any kind of music at any sound level you wish. These speakers just never sound stressed. In my case the speakers are hooked up to a Marantz PM-16 amplifier and a Marantz CD-10 cd-player. The combination makes for a very pleasant sounding system with almost valve-like characteristics. Detailing is beautiful and the sound is warm and very dynamic. The Marantz amplifier is rated at 80 watts a channel (in good old Marantz fashion) and provides more than sufficient power for the Tannoy's in domestic use. But there's more to come. Hook up a good turntable and be suprised. The turntable in my case is a Micro Seiki RX/RY1500 equipped with a MA-707 arm and a (rather modest) Denon DL-160 cartridge. The turntable way outperforms the CD-10 CD-player. Dynamics increase by an enormous factor and detailing and low-end response are much better. On the psychological side "the feel and emotion" of the music increase dramatically (sorry CD-guys). The M1000’s are here the stay…. and sorry….. not for sale at any price ! Strength:
Punchier bass based its large cabinet sizes and triple ducted port.Ideal for professional recording/dubbing and sound editing.
Weakness:
I have no ideas for this speaker's weaknessess as I've purchase this product for more than 10 years and now still using it and this speaker does a very good job for me as an audio editor. This is the sister of the legendary M1000 (Super Red Monitor)and the 3rd generation 'daughter'of the K3808 Tannoy's monitor kit. Strength:
Very musical. Never cause fatigue in listening for long hours. Ample lows and highs in any volume level. Can go as loud as you wish and not very picky on the power amplifier.
Weakness:
Not produced any more. This is a pair of fabulous speaker and I have owned it for over 15 years. Recently, I have started looking for an upgrade to a home theater system while do not want to sacrifice the musical quality. I have listened to several other speakers (B&W, Dynaudio, JMLab, Martin Logan, to name a few), and none comes to make me to part my Tannoy. Tannoy has done a good job in its dual concentric units. And most likely I am going to end up with other Tannoy's dual concentric as my center channel and surrounds. For the ample bass SRM15 (or M1000), I would have to look very hard to find a suitable subwoofer to add. For now, I will live without sub for a while. |

Strength:
The Big brother of the legendary Little Red Monitor has a warm deep bass sound, a crispy clear high and a smooth mid section. This is all you need for a good sound...
Weakness:
The size of it's cabinet with approx 180 liters it is not a womans's lover. For it's age (early 80's) still a good friend with a lot of listening pleasure. Similar Products Used: JBL 4311B |
