Strength:
Stunnig low, tight bass with complementary mids and highs. Transparent enough for quite a few upgrades.
Weakness:
Will sound sluggish when not driven properly. Will sound thin and small with lower quality stuff. Needs to be driven properly - not just power. Quality current drive seems to work. Have heard some power amps >100W that sounds mushy, soft and indistinct with these TDLs but the Aleph 3's 30W seems to work wonders. Strength:
Bass (transmission line).
Weakness:
Only medium with pop music. This are stunning speakers. The transmission line makes miracles and is still used by some manufaturers of speakers such PMC (used by great studios like BBC). |

I have had the Studio 1 for about two years. These speakers are quite good at what they were designed for, production of the entire range (ie 27Hz to 20kHz) in a small to medium sized room. The consistency throughout the frequency range is a pleasure to listen to. Bass is tight, extended and tonally accurate Imaging is good, and voices and piano sound very good. I wouldn't get these speakers if you want continuous pumping rock (though it does do it). The real forte of these speakers is the relatively subtle, low bass in classical and jazz. There isn't enough distortion/false bass for techno(so i'm told!). The bass/mid has a small diameter (about 5"), but relies on the transmission line and high excursion of the driver. If pushed with heavily boosted low bass of movies or some modern music, it will start tapping. Other than that, shes a gem:-) |
