Just bought 2 sets of the Technics SB-CR77 speakers for $49.95 last week when Circuit City had them on sale.

Read Matthews review, see bewlow, but can't understand what good it will do to the sound, to braid 1-2 foot of wires together. And why wouldn't every manufacturer do that as a standard?

Also what about braiding the speaker wires from your stereo to the speaker? If it works so well braiding them internally a short distance one should think it would work even better braiding the longer wires. I would really appreciate if anyone can give me a technical explanation on how braiding internal wires would improve sound in speakers.

I bought flat round magnet and attached in my previous speakers. That added extra punch and a little faster response time. Note that the magnets needs to be attatched to the current magnets on the speaker so they repel, there will be a little resistance just when you get close, but then they will snap together, and if you want to be sure they keep together a few drops of super glue should do it.

I will now do the same on these Technics speakers, and I will try and strenghten (stiffen) the cabinets.

A continuation of my review directly below. I recently upgraded my amp from a Sony stereo to an Onkyo DD/DTS and I noticed that the speakers now sounded awfully harsh in a lot of different songs. This was due to the cleanness of the Onkyo compared to the coloration of the Sony- which also hid most of the bad recordings I own, by the way. I became very irritated at this harshness so what I did just today is unscrewed each of the drivers, pulled them out a wee bit so that they were free from the cabinet, and rotated them many times in a fashion that braided the wires running from the crossover to each of the cones. Upon reinsertion of the drivers I was delighted to hear that the previous harshness had almost disappeared (bad recordings contribute too), and the midrange opened up significantly. I played a couple familiar songs and I heard some stuff I'd never heard before. The fact that the wires were not braided already makes me think Technics put the speakers together sloppily.
So far I've only braided the wires for tweeter and midrange, but soon I will also do the 12" woofer too. That should tighten bass up- as if it wasn't already tight. Currently when a bass note hits the drivers hardly move themselves, but rest assured air will be moved.
I rotated the drivers about 10 to 12 times over, but I plan to go about 40 or 50 times, just to get maximum results. I'm hoping this little operation will decrease a hiss that has also bothered me. So far I'm finding these speakers are even better, for the money, than I originally thought.
I'll repost later on to further analyze what my tweak has brought me.
Matt

Strength:

Price,mid and high

Weakness:

bass is not very good, Has that annoying Booming sound

If you are looking for a decent speaker for a cheap price this is a good choice. The mid and high are good quality for the money but if you are looking for a better sounding bass you might not buy this brand I recommand a pair of KlH's or some Sony's.

Strength:

Great sound, NICE bass, nice to look at.

Weakness:

None in my opinion, I love em.

Picture this. My roommate has two 300 watt Jensen J1 speakers as fronts and we have my two of these 200 watt Technics as rears. Just let me say that the Technics have a 3" larger woofer. They blow away the Jensen's in not only sound quality at low and high volumes but also bass output. These things put off so much bass that my pant legs were shaking at 10-15 feet away. I got them at the employee discount at circuit city for $65 each. For $65 you cannot beat this sound, you just can't.

It is a wonderful speaker!!! Yes, I am sure that there are speakers out there that better this one, but for the sound that you get for the price, you will be hard pressed to find a better value. I am just a casual listener, although I love music and love to wind down by listening to it after a hard day at work. Usually I feel guilty by buying something that I really don't need, but in the case of these speakers, there is not one bit of guilt to be found. Buy these now, and thank yourself later. These are a great investment!!

For the proce these are really good speakers. The decible rating is a little low at 90 decibels, but with enough power they will pound quite well. They look very good with the covers on and off. You can tell that Technics spent some time making these speakers look good. The sound is decent, with emphasis on the mids and highs. I am not too impressed with the 15 inch speaker. The magnet is really whimpy and when you push the speaker cone back there is not as much resistance as there should be. The cabinets are kinda skimpy too. A little more spent to get a little more rigid case would have been a good bet by technics. But I guess you get what you pay for.
Overall this is one of the best values you can get for your money. I would recommend the cerwin vega ls series from best buy if you want to spend a little more.
If you are going to go buy these at circuit city print the price off the internet and get them for a hundred each. Also, spend the extra $10 to get the extended 5 year warranty so you can blow the speaker out as many times as you want and they will replace it for free.

Great value, good bass, clear highs

Not the best speaker on the market today but will add a little rumble to your life. Search hard enough and you can pick these up for well under $100. great price for a fairly well built speaker with 15" woofers. very good for music, not so good for surround sound systems because of the high power intake and low profile.

Strength:

Price, high end

Weakness:

lacking stereo image not good for surround sound/video systems.

I have to agree with the other reviewers for the price they are good speakers, not great but I regret not saving a bit longer and buying a better pair of speakers. I've heard speakers a third of this size sound just as good or better and most importantly give a much better stereo perspective. Also, they're very large units and unless you can turn them up to a rather loud volume you won't get all the tone out of them that are on your recordings.

Strength:

Low price, midrange and tweeter sound quality. They also look really cool in oak color!

Weakness:

Bass comes out a little strong and muffled.. not too much of a problem if you have some kind of equalizer to put the bass down a little bit.

Great deal for such good speakers! I went back to Radio Shack and returned my new RCA's and bought these. Circuit City has a 30-day low price gauruntee so I can get any money that I would save if they have a sale in the next month. I recommend these speakers to anyone who wants clear, loud music!
