Strength:
-Detailed mids and high -With proper room treatment, you don't need a sub -Works well with components costing 4-5x it's price
Weakness:
-Likes to be away from rear wall -The grill thing, filmsy Used in a mostly HT setup, I never felt the 8.4 to be the weakest link. As I upgraded each component, it just produces more detail and clarity with each improvement. Having moved the speakers away from the rear wall, imaging and soundstand improved tremendously. You just have the feeling that the 8.4s have more to give, given the right source and amplifier. Similar Products Used: Missions, Paradigms, Acoustic Lab |

Strength:
very good soundstage, nice bass, amazing clarity.
Weakness:
flimsy grills, resonates at high volume ( hope wharfedale would redesign it ) A very good speaker for the price. I bought a complete home theater package consisting of 8.4, diamond center and 8.1 for 17,000 pesos or roughly $ 330. They are very good at movies and music. Nice soundstage. When playing music, the sound always emenates from the middle in front of the listener. I thought the center was on, but it was not. great illusion there. Whether I sit off axis, the soundstage remains. The clarity of these speakers were amazing. It sounded better than more expensive speakers I know ( bose, infinity ).Dont hesitate to audition these speakers, you will not regret what you'll hear. Strength:
Detailed mids and highs, pretty strong and clean bass, they sound great for home theater
Weakness:
As everyone else has noted, the grills are surprisingly flimsy; it takes a delicate touch to take them off without breaking them. Made in China but what isn't nowadays I'm no audiophile, and I needed new speakers, so I started searching the internet. Plus I had a $200 gift certifate at Amazon. After much hand-wringing and poring over everything I could find on Wharfedale speakers, I decided to buy these over the Emeralds; I figured since the Emeralds weren't on Wharfedale's site they had been discontinued/were out of date (and they didn't have the kevlar drivers). I am extremely pleased with these so far, they blow away my old speakers (BSR 15") in every area except mega bass. When I biwired them they sounded even better, which I didn't think was possible. On all types of music I listen to-rock, alternative, jazz, classical they display detail and depth that I have never heard before. I love these speakers and am really enjoying music more than ever before. Presently I am driving them with an old Nakamichi AV300 (70 wpc). I think with a more powerful amp they would sound even better but I'm not complaining. Similar Products Used: Bose 301 |

Strength:
CHEAP! - dirt cheap if you would like it termed that way (it costs 8650 pesos in manila - that is less than US$200 if you buy it here) with musical performance comparable to a 20-30 thousand peso pair of speakers. nice black finish and the signature yellow cones of the bass,bass/mid drivers is a welcome combination. negligible bass port noise even at reasonable volume. bi-wiring/bi-amping capable and gold plated banana style plugs are also nice touches.
Weakness:
the baffle/speaker cabinet is quite thin (an issue if thickness of the speaker cabinet is your thing) , the grille is awful and resonates at some bassy musical passages if you put them on, then again you can remove the grilles anyway. The speaker cabinet is quite tall and obtrusive if you are used to small /hideaway speakers such as the bose AM-5. At such cheap price (purchase price is less than 10,000 pesos or equivalent to less than US$ 200 (at 52 pesos per dollar exchange rate at time of this writeup)) you cant beat the price/performance curve of these speakers. yes they may be cheap but the sound and clarity it makes may decieve you for something worth much more. yes, the whole thing is made in china, but which manufacturer doesnt use 3rd world countries (for cheaper labor/manufacturing costs) to manufacture world class items anyway? point is these speakers deliver what the specs sheet says, as well as the musicality that i expect from speakers - it has bass, mids and treble that is comparatively better than my dad's bose acoustimass 5s, at a price that is a steal. wood/baffle construction seems inadequate since im used to having wood/baffles that are far more thicker than these 8.4s, the thing is, it doesnt resonate as well - maybe its the design given to these. the bass and bass/mid cones are made of kevlar, the surrounds made of butyl rubber and the phase plug of the bass/mid driver is uniquely wharfedale.the dome tweeter is made of fabric (silk i presume) Im still burning it in (manufacture claims it has to be burned in for about 100 hours for it to shine) and already, im amazed with the clarity it brings. natalie cole and dianne krall seems to sing in front of me! now those are speakers. Strength:
very sharp (Not metallic) and accurate highs, strong flowing mids, and a very good bass. you won't need a sub if your room is smaller then 7m*5m even when you turn the volume to a shriek.
Weakness:
Nothing. Grill shmill - Does that realy matter? they are beutiful with this Grill. Mine where made in Britain. I walked in & out of audio stores. but just couldn't find good enough speakers for the price i could pay. Best buy offered crappy speakers, and said better ones whould cost a lot more. then I found this SG store which is an importer in Israel of such comp' as : magnet, yamaha, and wharfedale. they played all of them for me with the CD, I brought (the Doors - Collection -> best Stereo CD ever made), and the only speakers who could go so low with the bass voice of Jim Morrison where these amazing two. I put them in my living room, along with the Center that came with them (included in the price), and they Rock the neigburhood. No sub needed - Save your money. along with the JBL's I bought 6 months before I bought these beuties, they make a fantastic home theater system. If you find them in a store don't let go. Have fun. Strength:
Accurate, transparent, solid acoustic design. Excellent imaging. Strong depth of field. Unexpectedly good bass response, even when driven with a middle of the line consumer-grade amp. Most listeners will NOT require a sub at normal listening levels.
Weakness:
The cheesiest grill covers on the market. Wow! Having built speakers to put myself through college, and having owned many different mid-high end brands from the '80's, thought I'd heard it all. Gotta say, the Diamond 8.4's bowled me over. Better than expected sonic quality. Guess technology really has improved the way new generation speakers sound, and the Diamonds are acoustically stunning. After having listened to many albums for years, with the Diamonds, I heard things in my favorite CD's that just weren't there before. Overwhelming bang for the buck. Similar Products Used: Bose 501's, Bose Acoustimass; Bose 901's (try not to laugh- they were good in their days; Klipsch (several variants); Polk SDA's; Polk Monitor 10-B's; Cerwin Vega D-series. Strength:
Superb sound, bi-wire, floor spike and plinth, kevlar drivers and silk tweeter, great bass, excellent frequency response-almost rules out the need for a sub, Price is NZ dollar, maple colour is very nice, price, price, price, very solid did I mention price...
Weakness:
Hmmm, not a lot really, guess to be picky the speaker grill is a little weak and flimsy, would love to see/hear a solid wood version Wow!! bang for the buck-extremely good, I put alot of thought into my speakers when I was builing my current set up, listening to different manufactures and models, and these are absolutely fantastic. Sensational bass. I have bi-wired these and I cannot stop raving about them. They are so good that I went and got the 8.1 for my rears and the matching centre to finish it all off, I have not had the urgent need to get a sub...yet. Its good to see an elegant looking floor-stander with Kevlar drivers, bi-wire compatible for the price of these. Strength:
Great sound!! Very inexpensive when compared to everything I found in its performance/sound quality range. 5 way binding posts.
Weakness:
The grill is flimbsy and cheaply made. Speakers are made in China. Hard to find a shop to demo them. Listened to many, many other speakers before deciding on the Warfedale Diamond 8.4. They sound better than anything I listened to that was less than $2000. I paid $549 and that included a matching center speaker. I love these speakers! Very detailed, un-colored highs. Mids are natural sounding and full. Bass is tight and goes fairly deep. Expect a long 50+hour break in period. Rather power hungry, would recomend an amp rated at least 90watts. Also, you can bi-amp them but I haven't yet. My speaker grill broke when I gently tried to remove it. The grill frame is flimbsy and cheaply made but they work fine if you leave them on:) Wild West Electronics is having another grill sent to me, no charge.
