Strength:

Price, Quality of sound when Bi-Amped

Weakness:

None at this price

I bought these MFM7's intended to replace the Technics SB7000 in my Video room. I needed something slim due to the new 60" TV. These Wharfedale were so reasonable on uBid ($137+shipping), they seemed worth a try. I had no intention to compare them with my speakers in my classical music room, so I was not expecting a lot.

I connected the MFM7 without reading the instructions as usual (with 30+years experience setting up audio systems at home, who needs instructions!), and they sounded pretty bad. The highs were clear but bright, but the low-mids and base were so muddy and confused, the symphonies sound almost funny. After checking the instructions, I decide to try the connections to the lower pair of the two terminals. This made all the difference, the speakers sound much better and the problem with the confused base was corrected.

So if you do not bi-wire or bi-amp these speakers, use the lower pair terminals for connection! Wharfedale should have mentioned this in the instructions but did not. They did say that performance would improve if you bi-amp them, so I decided to try. I was not disappointed for the additional wiring effort. After two months' break-in usage, I also use them for two-channel CD and FM music listening now. They sound flat, clear, tight, and musical which I value the most. The rating reflects the price I paid for them. They can match any speakers Good Guy will sell at $800 - $900. But they are not my EV Reference D, which cost $4,000 a pair in 1984.

Strength:

Very good sound.

Weakness:

Grills ... of course.

Very good sound quality when broken in and bi-wired.

I think these may sound same or better than Sapphire 89 though the 89 has a slightly different sound. These have good bass response. Better than sapphire 87 and modus 8 in my opinion.

I use these for mains and for home theatre. Home theater setup of 3 mfm-7's in front, 2 mfm-7's on side, 2 mfm-5's in rear, and Citation 7.4 sub has great sound when driven with high quality amp and sound processor (Citation 7.1, Citation 7.5, Citation 7.0).

I have moved to using higher quality class A amps with these Wharfedale speakers and it yields a world of difference in sound. Was using mid-fi vintage Luxman amps before and they sounded okay but better quality amp is best.

Buy them, break them in for a reasonable period and bi wire or bi amp and BE HAPPY!
