Strength:

Bass output. Fancy look. Soundstage. Price.

Weakness:

Very cheap construction. Rather unlively sound (flat flat flat!).

Like a considerable no. of people, I got caught in the uBid hype and desperate to get one of those "gems". I ended up getting a pair from eBay. I listen to classical music exclusively and those speakers were impressive - until I hear some real speakers. They could play loud - very loud - but the music is not as lively as expected (compare to the Sapphire series). From time to time, the music is simply flat (try some audiophile quality piano music and you'd know what I meant).

The one thing I really like is the tight and clean bass. But that's pretty much all.

Well, after trying out various Wharfedake speakers (Sappire, Modus, Topaz, and MFM) - most of them get glowing reviews in this site - I am simply disappointed. There may be some miracle speakers which cost less than $500 and sound great - but they are definitely not Wharfedale Modus 1.6 (nor the Modus series, nor the Sapphire series, nor the MFM series).

They do work well as home theater speakers. For serious music listening (including classical music DVDs), however, save your money.

I want to give Modus 1.6 a 4 but since it's so overhyped - it only deserves a 3. Overall is still 3 because of the cheap material and built.
