VALDUS 400 Is one the best speakers wharfedale ever produced. Ive tried different good names but the performance of Valdus 400 was very distinctive. From Hi to Med to Low, just use a good amp like Onkyo.... 14 yrs of service and still kicking!

Strength:

Rave strength bass output that leaves you breathless. Very powerful, use a big amp. Cheap to pick up now as they are old stock.

Weakness:

You may want to match some surround sound tweeter output speakers to compliment the rich, deep bouncing bass.

These babies push out a massive bass that will get your heart pumping to 180bmp as it pushes through you. Great speakers, use with the grill off, they look classy. Twin bass units on each speaker can sometimes strangle the high notes, but hey, the neighbours seemed to hear it all very clearly and these speakers reward rock, rave and techno listeners.

Strength:

Superb bass, VERY loud, good build

Weakness:

You need a powerful amp!

When I first saw these speakers I knew they were the ones for me. I saw them on a web offer so bought them on looks alone! they look awesome! and sound it as well! I hooked them up to one of my amps and turned it up, but it wasnt powerful enough so I had to get my other one! These are very powerful speakers. They do go very loud, and then want to go louder! they are an excellent speaker, alouth there is a slight lack of midrange, but the bass is all there as my neighbours will tell you! If you are considering buying a pair-go and get them!!

Strength:

EXCELLENT SOUND FOR THE PRICE! good bass, (although you WILL need a subwoofer box), great highs and mids. I push them hard almost nightly and cannot complain.

Weakness:

Overload protection causes shutdown after prolonged use at high volumes. Although the volumes are below advertised nominal rating of 150W.

Won these at Ubid and bought 4 at $55/ piece instead of the comparable 250W max JBL ND310. I use them in my home theatre system for the 2 front and 2 Rear surrounds w/ my the Valdus center for my rear/center surround (6.1) and JBL N-center front/center, and SONY WMA40 wooferBOX. They're driven by my Pioneer VSX850 6.1ch 6x110 rcvr connected by Monster XP spkr wires. They sound great at all levels especially high, no distortion AT ALL whatsoever! Watching LORD oF THE RINGS thru them is FREAKIN' excellent! At prolonged high volumes my recvr shuts them down for about 2 secs - probably due to the overload protection advertised on the Wharfedale site (I tend to get carried away sometimes.? I paid 1/2 the price for 4 speakers compared to the PAIR of JBL ND310's I did want w/ the exact same max power rating - 250W peak. CANNOT beat them for the price.

so i bought it last week... i was looking for good speakers and i couldn''t find something good. i listened to jamo,Ae agis 3, ar, eltax, jbl, yamaha 45, mission 73,atlantic and almost every speaker here. but nothing empress me like the valdus 400. it''s very old speaker (1996+). but it''s works very well! i really don''t know why people say that the MiD has lack of power... the should have good reciever. it''s works good with the home-cinema and every kind of music. my system is: wharfedale valdus 400 wharfedale valdus center yamaha rx-v620 (very very good!!!!) whafredale valdus 300 whafedale valdus sub. toshiba sd-1300 dvd marantz cd4000 cd-player monster cabels.

Strength:

Wicked bass, excellent mid-range...treble is crystal clear...

Weakness:

for this price? none.

my cousin bought a pair of 400's for £100 a pair, (that british sterling)...after hearing them, i'm in no doubt...i work with professional audio every day and for this price, there are no better speakers...my cousin uses a marantz 100w pm-63 amp with audioquest 4 cable...this amp was only £100 second hand......imagine how good these speakers could sound with a £5000 audiophile amp!

i cannot stress the importance of using high quality speaker cable.. and a good amp...in my professional opinion, go for marantz or nad in order to balance out the price with these speakers...

we have auditioned these speakers with everything from classical to jazz-funk to electronica and tech-house......amazing....for this price? you should be in no doubt!!!

This is a commentary rather than a true review. I am somewhat surprised by the buzz on this site regarding Wharfedale speakers, especially regarding the ubid site. Ubid jacked up the retail price on these speakers considerably. According to Whathifi?, the UK magazine and there website, these speakers list for 200 pounds, or $350 US not the $750 US listed above. My intention is not to put down any of the previous reviewers or their purchase but to educate others who may be interested in purchasing them at ubid. Do it if the price is reasonable to you but don't believe that you are getting a great deal just because of their posted retail price, which by the way is per PAIR while the price you pay is per SPEAKER. Anyway, my advice that anyway interested in Wharfedale speakers should check out WhatHiFi at your newstand/bookstore and see their ratings before you buy. For $350 US, you could get a lot of great speakers for the same price you see these going for on Ubid, e.g. Acoustic Energy Aegis one, Tannoy Mercury series, Kef Q-15'2, Energy, PSB, etc. When it comes to bang for the buck, the Brits hold that to a premium so if the british regard any US speaker/product as a great deal, then that speaker/product is truly a steal in the good ol' U.S.A. A good example is the MSB Link Dac which lists for I believe 400 pounds ($600 US) in the UK but lists for $400 in the US and still beat out the Music Fidelity 24K in a comparison even though the Link Dac cost more in the UK. Unfortunately, I cannot say I have listed to these speakers so I can't tell you what I think of their sound. What I can say is please do the research, there appear to a ton of Wharfedale speakers on ubid that are continually being auctioned. Don't get sucked in by the bargain mentality because Ubid can be very misleading for their retail prices. Anyways, the stars are just to be consistent with those previously made.

Strength:

Nice tight bottom, crisp top &, to my ears, more than adaquate midrange after 40 hours breakin. This is a remarkably accurate speaker. What you put in to it is what you will get out. You will be able to hear all the mistakes the producers, engineers and musicians make. You will also really enjoy hearing well performed and recorded material. I am very, very pleased. The black ash finish and small box size make for a visually unobtrusive speaker. (We have Korean and Vietnamese ricebaskets and Hmong hats on top of ours and they serve very well as display stands). Being driven nicely by 75 Yamaha watts per side and a souped up Hafler pre. Front porting is a good idea & should be adopted for all the line.

Weakness:

Cheesy grill cloth and frame. I wish the logo weren't so obtrusive.

A very good loudspeaker for home use.

I just received a new pair of Valdus 400s that I purchased through Ubid. While unpacking them in noticed the sound of something clunking around in one of them. After hooking them up, it was obvious that one of them sounded wonderful and the other sounded like it was the tweater that had come loose. The sound was dull and muffled.

I was kind of freaked out because I bought them on auction and thought I would be screwed. I figured I would to have pony up to have it fixed. I called Ubid. They said that they could only refund my money (which I was happy to hear) but it was unlikely that I could exchange it since it was an auction item. Fact is, I really wanted the speakers. They sound absolutely amazing for the price. The reviewers on this site are right on. So, I called Wharfedale. I thought that there would be nothing they could do since they're in the UK. Not so! A very friendly person directed me to their rep in the US. When I called the US rep, another friendly person told me to simply fax over the invoice and Wharedale would send me a new speaker immediately. An advance replacement!! Yipee! I was dancin' happy.

If you can, buy them new...it seems Wharfedale really backs up their product.

5 stars for sound and 5 stars for service.

Strength:

Price, high-end reproduction

Weakness:

Break-in period

I was really happy to pick these up for cheap after reading the reviews. They are really "bright" on the highs, but out-of-the-box the lows were very weak. I noticed that the bass was really tight, almost too tight, without much cone movement. However, after kicking some Rage Against the Machine and Limp Bizkit on them for 4 months they sure opened up.....

The bass is much deeper and has more boom than when I initially bought them. The bass is still fairly tight (which I prefer), and paring them with a 12" 150W sub sure helped out a lot and allows me to hit when I want. The mids are nice lower volumes (normal listening levels), but sometimes bottom out when pumped. I have them as my front speakers attached to my Onkyo 575, and when I have the volume at about 12 o'clock the highs are clear, the lows are good, but the mids get lost somewhere in between. Still, they seem to have really benefitted from some breaking in. Tweaking with the EQ and the subn settings has alleviated some of the mid problem, but it still could use some work.

For the price I can't complain. I might upgrade soon and move these to my room, but for the time being I am really pleased with the price to performance comparison.
