Strength:

Roomy, solid bass response, efficiency

Weakness:

Tweeter very directional and low in detail

For the UBID price of 177 apiece these are very good speakers. I agree with previous reviews that the tweeters are too directional however, I find the midrange response to be better than I expected after reading previous reviews. I am running my amp set flat in the bass range because a higher setting is too "boomy". Bass is very solid and roomy sounding but not as low in the register as a quality sub. For the price very good but the AR7's have better detail and clarity in the high end at 3 times the price.

I recently gave my valdus 500's away to a student cause I replaced them with Wharfedale's emerald 97. The valdus are great speakers for about $700-800/pr range. They have decent kick, but if you compare them to high-end speaker, their mids get muttered by the bass. I'm not saying that because of the price. The emerald's cost most than 3 times the valdus, but if you power them with the same system and compare them "heads-up", there is a clear distinction. All music type considered, these are a good overall speaker.

Strength:

Incredible bass, hitting you full on, midrange not distinct at first, treble great. Good price.

Weakness:

Very directional all round, positioning v. important.

At first the midrange and treble were both muddy, I think drowned out by the two big woofers, then I upgraded to large oxygen free copper cables, and changed my 60 watt Kenwood amp to a 100 watt Pioneer DVD amp. The treble is now wonderful, and the midrange definately improved (I listen to a lot of instrumental and classical music)

The loudness control on the amp should be off in my opinion, the bass is something else, subs are not needed on a good amp! The bass on the over speakers I tested stayed at the speaker cone, the bass from these flies out and hits you on the other side of the room.

Great speakers considering the money, would suit a dance, rock or dvd system wonderfully, the midrange is better now but not good enough really for serious delicate music.

Strength:

Powerful bass! Very neutral sound. Clear treble.

Weakness:

The bass isn´t deep. Midrange isn´t the best.

I bought these speakers in november 99 and I´m very pleased with them. The lack of midrange is fixed by the pair of Jamo Art´s I use with them. I wants some more bass and have theirfore desided to buy a subwoofer. Use ém with a Sony TA-FB740R amplifier. And the jamo´s are driven by a JVC AX-22.

Power Handling, Clarity, Size, Looks

Weakness:

Grill

I do DJ & Karaoke shows and these speakers have been far & away the most outstanding units I have ever used or heard.

I listen to a lot of shows done by others with different speakers and have used others myself and NOTHING I have heard fills a hall more beautifully and powerfully than these Valdus 500's. They also produce more full sound at lower volumes than anything I have ever used or heard.

Other DJ's have come to my shows and been extremely impressed with the looks (with the grills off) and sound. They become distressed when they find the Valdus 500's they praise cost 1/10th the price of the lesser sounding speakers they are using.

Got a pair of these from Ubid for about $400. I checked around - some audio stores have them for about $800. Really nice speakers. Good looking and sound great. I agree with most of the other reviews - clear and muscular. I listen to all kinds of music, they really shine on classical (esp strings) and sound great on rock and jazz too. One thing I noticed though. I don't know the technical term - but placement makes a huge difference. They are very directional. My room is long and narrow and they are placed against the longer wall (about 10' apart). Too close together and they sound flat. With the right spacing they sound fantastic. So, be prepared to experiment. I listened to Mirage, Boston Acoustics and some others before I bought -- these are better!Especially for the price!

Strength:

Big and intimidating

Weakness:

not what they seem

These speakers can't hold up to my mid level yamaha receiver, they are overdriven and cut out at 3/4 volume.
Poor quality and muddy
I used them till I could afford Acoustic Research Towers then gave them to my nephew, I even feel bad about giving him such shoddy units.

Strength:

Nice tight bass, nice highs and loads of power.

Weakness:

The midrange is a small weakness.

These speakers are really great.
They play almost everything with exelent result, and really load too...
I've fixed the lack of midrange by using a pair of Jamo Art (Wallhanging speakers with 5" bass/mid and 1" dome treble) witch gives a very clear and nice mid to the system.
I also have a Proson FatBoy 10 (A 10" Subwoofer with an built-in 150Watt amplifier. And sence it's a FatBoy-woofer, it can move up to 1", +/-12mm)
This combination gives a really great sound, Nice highs, nice mid and really PHATT BASS!
And i'm going to buy myself another Proson FatBoy 10 soon.
One can never have to mutch bass...

Amplifiers: A Sony TA-FB740R at 2x100watt(Valdus) and a JVC AX-22 at 2x50watt(Art)
