I have owned these Yamaha NS1000M for over 30 years now and i still haven't found a pair of speaker in over 30 years to win me over and make me cash them in for a new pair. They just don't make them like they used to. Maybe that's why they weigh so much.

I have used Yamaha NS1000M Monitor speakers for over 33 years. Over that time I have literarily struggled to hear better speakers. – BUT then it may also have been the amplifier and source. I used a variable output CD Player directly (no preamp) feeding the TRIO (Kenwood) LO5M Direct drive Mono Block Dual amplifiers, with directional Coax cable, ie. earthed at source only). I have now settled for "Richter Dragon IV 7.1 speaker setup" (Aussi brand: can also be purchased in the UK) surround system in my retirement years, perhaps not quite in the same class but equally as stunning. On occasions I still yearn for the Yamaha NS100M speakers.

Price paid $1750 AUD (NEW) in 1978.
Used product at least 3 time a week over the 32 years
Service Faults over 32 years NONE, Speakers & Amplifier

price paid 20.00
I went to an auction and nobody knew what these were or wanted them,If it was not for this web site I would have passed on these speakers as I googled with my blackberry for info and found all this accurate info for me to realize just what was for bid.there was such little interest
they sold for 20 dollars to ME.I could not believe how it happened I had to put these in my car and leave right away as I kept thinking someone somewhere would come to their senses and demand them back. I just about ran home with these beauty's and hooked them up to my
yamaha receiver next to my jbl 4311b monitors needless to say in heaven with dark side of the moon
playing non stop, somehow need to leave the room need to shower and shave go back to work
just cant seem to move.as a guitar and bass player I love to hear exactly what the artist is trying to say
and i feel like these speakers give you just that TRUE REPRESENTATION not colored in any way
shape or form pure clean music appreciation What more could an audiophile ask for whether playing or listening clean music appreciation.

Borrowed these from a friend and hooked them to a muscular 45W/Channel 300B/805 SET and analogue sources.
On the good side:
Fairly easy drive and efficient.
Very clean, fast and detailed.
Lots of inner detail and good micro dynamics.
Unboxy and image pretty good (well built and dampened box).

On the not so good side (subjective of course):
Tonality is a bit bright.
They sound a bit clinical/dry. I think it has to do with the stiffness of the drivers (including the non Berillium bass driver) - it seems to stop as if it has an ABS.
They sound as if the decay is a bit chopped off.
I got a somewhat similar impression from some accuton ceramic drivers.
This very subjective and controversial statement but I find them a bit unsexy/unsensual.
If I had to live with them I would have mated them with a more romantic and lush sounding tube amp to offset these properties and definitely not solid state amps.

Not that it matters....
At first, I thought that these speakers were phenominal!
But, an other enthusist, who listened to them, told me to listen to piano through them.
When I did, I immediatley knew that these high-tech speakers were terrible in "Natural Sound" - the "NS" of the model number stands for "Natural Sound". The concert grande sounded like a spinet, and a spinet sounded like a honkey-tonk piano. Then, I realized that all voices osunded like the singer was about to get laringitiis. Then, I realized that all music had a ringing to it that at first tentalizes, but once realized colors all music too much.
It was the Berillium drivers that did it.
There are only "metal" drivered speaker system that sounds accurate are the truely phonominal, state-of-the-art Diatone DS-505s and the copper tweetered Celestions that roll off the treble too much.
Metal is a good ideal (and a great marketing ploy), but only the most expensive drivers make it work.

I’ve had my NS-1000M’s for nine months now. They were just a tad nicked-up cosmetically but with the help of a black Sharpie they look pretty darn good.

I bought the pair because of everything I’d read about them (including here) and was sure I could resell them easily if they were not to my liking.

Well, it’s all true. The dynamics, transient response, transparency, imaging (when set up correctly) et al, far exceeded what I’d even hoped to hear. These are absolutely incredible speakers, without a doubt world class.

Also true…. Yes, they will reveal everything! They take no prisoners on poorly recorded music or poor electronics.

Bottom line……. NOT FOR SALE !

As a recording engineer in my early career during the 80's, we used NS1000's in four of our studios. They were a brilliant all-round speaker and could be trusted to give a faiithful and accurate sound. Sound mixes on them translated well to the real world.

A few years ago I bought a pair off eBay for $800. They were in pretty bad shape, but I've since put in all new drivers and upgraded the wiring and terminals. (I was fortunate enough to have the forsight to buy a full set of drivers from Yamaha before they eventually became unavailable) . The new drivers cost more than what I paid for the speakers, but they now sound as good as new, and have been a brilliant investment.

I do want to get the cabinets refubished too, probably to a piano black gloss finish, as the cabinets do need some serious work. Though their finish won't be as per original, they'll look fantastic and their sound will remain awesome.

I expect these speakers will stay with me till the day I die - what more can I say! Natural, accurate - they are phenomenal, and fully deserve the reputation that they have.

(I drive them with an integrated Krell, and Resolution Audio Opus 21 CD player).
