Strength:
Well built boxes
Weakness:
Base extensions are a let down for what they cost After reading a lot of reviews on this site I decided to write my opinion for that it is worth. Found base lacking, mids & top end fairly reasonable for there price range. These speakers were actually my brothers I tested. He thought they were fantastic like many reviews. After compairing my focal Speakers, Twin 8" 8K5412/ 5" 5K412 & Titanium Tweeter, (Cost to build $2,500AU),He Sold his System & is now building a pair. There is no comparison in Base/Mids or top end. Alo Compaired to Acusound, Cost $1800AU Base was far better in Acusound but mids & top was far better in the NS 1000M'S Be aware u must do A B test to realy Know what u are hearing. Dont get me wrong, NS1000's are about the right price for what they are depending if u like better base or a cleaner top end. Similar Products Used: Focal & Acusound. Strength:
The best stereo speakers I've ever heard.
Weakness:
big, treble can be piercing. I'm 14 years old and even before I was born, my dad owned these speakers. I grew up on probably some of the best sound quality you can get. These speakers are absolutly amazing. I've yet t play a song on them that is out of range eiter high or low. When I rip cds onto a computer, if I don't rip them at the highest bit-rate possible, I can tell the differance. Whether it be between 256kbps and 320kbps, or 320 and Lossless. On these speakers, even a 1kbps differance is noticable. Someone email me the most intense song ever that pushes all speakers to their limits, and I'll bet the Yamaha NS-1000s can handle it. Any movie (even The Matrix) sounds amazing on these speakers. If you have the money, and if you can find them, get them. |

Bass...give them juice and the woofer can blow out windows.
Weakness:
Rarity This is a review for the NS-1000X. I had this unit for a year until i laid my hands on a pair of the larger NS-2000. The NS-1000X replaced the older NS-1000 and has updated internals and a carbon fibre woofer!!! Faster...more tuneful bass...amazing. The NS-1000X replaced some B&W Nautilus speakers...just blew them away with clarity and bass. The NS-1000X speakers rocked with all music. The NS-1000's are the worlds best kept speaker secret. The NS-2000's i have now just give more of what the NS-1000X's gave....however the NS-2000's are only available in japan. I had to go back to get some. If you can find some NS-1000X then prepare to pay top dollars. They are very very rare but very very good....and i've had a lot of kit in my lifetime. Strength:
Highs and mids, clarity, soundstage. Base is to my liking but I suppose a bit light for some. I am extremely pleased with the purchase I made. I will either be hooking them to a KT88 amp when I find a partner for the single that I have o9r, an EL34 if I can't find the partner amp.
Weakness:
Pins that secure the grill cover. Otherwise perfect for me. I purchased a pair of NS 1000X with walnut cabinets largely based on the reviews on this page as well as a few elsewhere. I had never heard any of the models before auditioning the X model. It was demonstrated on high end solid state equipment. At the moment I am using them with an EL84 amp - I know - under powered but the sound is spectacular - much better than the high powered high priced equipment I first heard them on. Now I see what all the talk about soundstage is all about. I am hearing CD's in a much different way than ever before. For my ears and tastes, these are stunning speakers. I can't imagine ever getting rid of them. I listen to jazz mostly but a bit of rock and some classical. I always found the M model as a bit 70's Japanese ghetto blaster hardware store looking. The 1000 has a very 70's look and the grill covers are horrible. The X is amuch m0re attractive package to my eye. The only part of the package that is poor quality is the pencil lead sided pins that hold the grill covers to the face of the speaker. Mine are bent or broken. I put the covers on when I am out so any wouldbe intruder will assume they are cheap junque. Similar Products Used: These are the best I have ever owned and also the most expensive. Advents, Powered Advents, Dynaco, EPI, Ditton, Goodmans. All rubbish by comparison. I can now part with the horde of speakers that I had grown emotionally attached to. My wife could care less about them except for my new found willingness to clear out the house of all of the others. William T. |

Strength:
Extremely revealing speaker. For the money unbeatable.
Weakness:
Because of the detailed presentation might sound too bright, harsh when matched with the wrong equipment, especially solid state amps. I bought these speakers about 2 yrs ago and played them using various cheap and expensive top-quality solid state and tube amplifiers but was never really happy with the sound and was almost about to sell them again when I picked up a cheap integrated tube amp using EL-34 tubes. The only thing I want to say is that they will stay forever in my house. What a match in heaven. I am not kidding. Like one of the previous reviewer, a recording engineer who had heard hundred's of speakers during his career. It is like these speakers really come to live with these tubes. Very detailed still but not harsh at all but very revealing. They even have bass with these tubes. Similar Products Used: Name it and I probably heard it. |

Weakness:
light bass (i think is fault of my P.A , i´m searching one PA more appropiate with great damping factor. Anyone could tell me if a NAD-208 should be okay? At last!! I just buyed a pair of mint condition NS-1000 speakers , and i only can agree with the former report. I listed many others spks (2 or 3 times the price of these littles) and none come near! Strength:
True Piano reproduction like no other speaker on earth
Weakness:
Deep bass but with correct placement and room size this is easily solved. As a recording engineer I have worked with hundreds of studio monitors costing as much as $50.000. My NS-1000M's with handmade TELEFUNKEN EL-34 monoblock amplifiers are the best I have experienced ever. They love EL-34 amps and high end turntables. |

Strength:
Too many to count.
Weakness:
1. Dramatically highlights flaws in recordings, even though this is not a drawback in itself: it just lets you see (and hear) that a certain recording you used to consider first class shows some weakness. 2. Makes you terribly lazy and no longer so interested in live events. You simply put a CD into the player and you're there. I have now owned for eight years a pair of FX-3, the larger version of the NS-1000 made primarily for studio applications. The FX-3 shares the same beryllium tweeter-midrange pair in combination with a 30 cm (15") woofer and a larger cabinet (weighing roughly 60 kilos). I did purchase them essentially by chance for use in my country house with a number of different amps (primarily valve). I moved them last year jsut for testing to my city apartment to replace two 2.5R Maggies driven by a Mc275 after I switched to a passive preamp. By now I would not change the FX-3 for any other speaker pair I know. Simply unbelievable: a window into reality. |

Sound, construction, accuracy, longevity
Weakness:
It'l break your toe if it lands on it. Many years ago I started an audio recording business (I already owned the NS-1000M speakers at the time). I've really enjoyed using these outstanding speakers and when artists hear their work played through them they think I'm a better recording engineer than I really am! I agree with most of the former posts and I'd say have fun trying out various amp and source combinations until you find the sound you're looking for, since the speakers aren't going to limit your ability to determine what sounds the best. I think it all stems from the way the midrange and tweeter transducers were created. Since I haven't seen it described here, I'll tell you my understanding of the process used to manufacture both the midrange and tweeter. A form made out of copper is created for the tweeter and midrange domes. Then an extremely thin layer of molten beryllium is vapor deposited onto the copper form. The copper form with beryllium layer are then heated to the point where the copper melts away (it has a lower melting temperature than beryllium). Now what's left is a super rigid yet ulta-lightweight dome. In fact the tweeter dome weighs less than one petal of a small sweetheart rose! The low mass can be made to change direction (vibrate to create sound) with less effort, and yet the rigidity of the berillium prevents it from changing shape and causing unwanted vibrations even under high decible demands. It's a very expensive process and was more often used just for tweeter production on lesser Yamaha speakers of the era. I think that only the NS-1000 and NS-1000M had the midrange berillium domes. The difference between the NS-1000 and NS-1000M was Rosewood versus black-painted birch, and the latter also has a rigid metal screen covering the 12" woofer which is great when things get crazy around the studio or you have kids that like to poke at speakers! Both have metal screens to protect the midrange and tweeter. Find a pair, work out the amp/source and appropriate room details and enjoy hearing what we hear in the studio when we say "that's the sound I've been looking for"! |

Weakness:
below 100htz but.... I am an audio engineer who uses these speakers exclusively for high quality professional recordings..Buddy Rich,Elmer Bernstein, Michel Legrand,Johhny Mathis etc. It must be understood that these speakers will ONLY give an accurate bass response if the amp ic apable of providing the sufficient damping factor Quad 405/606 or similar will provide. They show up poor design of amp IMMEDIATLY. Audio Solutions built an amp ( Patented) with a damping factor of in the excess of 2000 I used it at Abbey road studio 1 and the bass end was better than the standard studio monitors. Some of the more hyped amps get into real trouble very qquickly when presented with a serious problem, producing inaccurate and floppy bass end You will find these speakers tireless to listen to at high level for hours on end under studio monitorin situation, more than can be said for many of the bigger and more expensive monitors. If you can find a pair and have a FIRST rate amp buy, you will not be let down Similar Products Used: B&K, Tannoy, Urie,Genlec.Comic devices supplied by "Control room designers" Uncle Tom Cobbley and all |
