Strength:

Wonderful sound, looks, build quality, price

Weakness:

None

For $299 a pair these can't be beat. I have them as mains connected to a Yamaha HTR-5280 receiver and the sound quality with both music and movies is fantastic. Bass response is also very good with a high quality, high powered receiver like the one I have. I couldn't find a better pair of main speakers for twice the price...

Strength:

Great Sound. Great main speakers

Weakness:

None

These speakers sound great. I'm driving them with a Yamaha DSP-A1000 ( 80 Watts RMS ) for the mids & highs, and a Carver TFM-35 ( 250 Watts RMS ) for the woofers. This is the best way to go. Outstanding sound. Great sound with movies and music. Supremevideo.com still had them in May of this year ( 2000 ). The only problem is that the shipping box is rather flimsly considering thier weight. One of the little tabs that holds the grill on was broken off on one of the speakers and the box was coming apart in a couple of places. No other damage. Not worth sending back for that. Only I know that the tab is missing. Mostly a packing and UPS handling problem.
These speakers sound good watching TV, movies, music, anything. In order to get the base you want you need to drive these speakers with two different amps. Will be enjoying these for years to come. They look good too.

Strength:

BASS, Clarity, PRICE...NICE SPEAKS!

Weakness:

A bit on the heavy side...but who moves HUGE speakers all over the place?

All in All, best bang for your buck. Something to consider is the nominal ohms of this speaker. Many people complain that they don't sound too full, and the bass is weak. These speakers are rated at 6 ohms, which is not nearly as common to find an appropriate amp as are many 8 ohm stereo components. Don't buy these if you have an 8, or 4 ohm stereo, or blame the residual wimpy sound if there's a discrepancy between the speakers and the reciever. Secondly, if you want to hear loud, get a POWERFUL amp. Again, the speaks are great...if you feel they aren't too loud, maybe you need to check your wattage and ohms. Good wattage is around 100/100+. Highs are met with clarity, Bass is superceded, and the sound will blow you away if you have a respectable 6 ohm reciever. I picked mine up for $290 at Best Buy. If you're considering these, and you take the above advice, you won't find a better speaker...they look tight too! five stars for the speaks....five for the $price$ enjoy...

Strength:

Nice sound for the price

Weakness:

Bass a bit week, kinda big speakers to carry around

I ended up buying these speakers at bestbut awhile back and finally am able to write a review on them. I am using the onkyo txds575 receiver. At first i was going to just have these two speakers for my home audio. I slowly realized that there wasnt enough bass and I needed a center channel badly. Now that I have added a subwoofer, center, and two rear speakers, boy does it sound better. I do recommend adding a subwoofer(i bought the klipsch ksw-12). If you read all the reviews on it, you will know it is a pretty good sub. The improvement with the sub was tremendous. Overall the speaker performs pretty well but the 15" side firing subwoofers dont yield enough bass.

Strength:

Very clean sound! Every instrument used in your music can be clearly heard. Clean tight bass

Weakness:

Little less bass them some higher priced/lower soud quality speakers.

I have a pair of computer speakers made by Yamaha that shake windows, and actually hit low bass without distorting. This is what prompted me to look for their home stereo line. These speakers are by far, top notch in clarity. Some of the other speakers I looked at did have more bass, but they lacked sound quality. The highs/mids are excellent, and the bass (at least the way I have them set up) is more than sufficient to upset neighbors 2 floors down. For the people not happy with the bass, get an EQ and a decent Receiver. For those looking to throw College dorm parties, go Cerwin Vega. For the true sound enthusiasts out there, these speakers are for you.

Strength:

These speakers sound great with most kinds of music. I haven't heard many speakers that can make strings sound as warm as these can.

Weakness:

The bass is a little weak for a 15" but a lot better when you use a 2nd amp or a sub.

I got these speakers to replace my old Technics. I was worried that because the speakers run at 6 ohms and my amp could only run at 4 or 8 that I would run into problems but I didn't. I use the Sony STR-DE835 receiver and I am very happy with the match. I would recomend these speakers to anyone who wants music reproduced well and clear.

Strength:

accurate sound, crisp highs, giant woofer, cool style

Weakness:

hard to get it level on carpet

You can have these speakers when you pry them from my cold dead hands.

On the weekends, my girlfriend is always up before me, and sometimes goes downstairs and watches a DVD or a movie on HBO or maybe some MTV. Eventually, this wakes me up with the THUD, THUD, THUD-THUD through the floor. I've always been a fan of Yamaha, as best bang for the buck audio, and these speakers are a perfect example. If you can find a pair, buy them. But DO NOT mail order them, as UPS will beat them to death in their flimsy box. I sent an online ordered pair back because of damage, and bought them locally instead.

The sound is accurate and smooth. Highs are so accurate as to be jarring when you come from a cheaper rack system as I did. No matter how loud I crank these things, they never sound strained or harsh. I have them hooked to a Yamaha 5.1 receiver with 100W per ch (RX-V995). I have a friend with the same receiver but Infiniti thin tower speakers supplemented with a huge subwoofer. On pure gut vibrations, he's got me beat due to the sub, but his speakers seem like they're burning my face when he cranks up a DVD. These Yamahas are silky smooth.

I've seen a few complaints here about lack of bass. I'm pretty sure these are folks used to brands like Cerwin Vega, who have rumbling subwoofers in their cars, and have never really heard accurate bass reproduction. These speakers are flat all the way down, with no fake thump or rumble. I run the receiver's tone controls completely flat and it sounds just perfect. When no one is home in neighboring apartments, I hit the "bass enhancement" button (just a good ol' fashioned loudness button) and pop in a DVD.

These speakers are part of a team that includes 2 NS-A638's (3-way 8" Yamahas) as surrounds, and a NS-AC143 Yamaha center channel. Sonically, they all work together perfectly in this 5.1 surround setup with an RCA 32" TV, Toshiba DVD, and a JVC S-VHS VCR.

You'd have to spend LOTS more money to get noticeably better sound. The style is just beautiful, and the arrangement makes the speaker far less intrusive than you would expect from one with a 15" woofer. Too bad it's officially discontinued.

Strength:

Incredible Sound!

Weakness:

None - after one year

These speakers are AWESOME!!!!!

They get deep, full lows and the highs are crisp and clear. For movies these sound great, and the sound really pumps when I blast the stereo.

These speakers look almost as good as they sound. Their tall thin black appearance is very slick and it hides the fact that these speakers have 15 inch woofers on the side.

Only recently did I look at the specs and was surprised that the frequency ratio is 30-20,000 Hertz! WOW - I know that they don't have the 20-30 hertz range covered, but that's what the Yamaha YST-SW160's are for. This makes an AMAZING sound combination with whatever Yamaha cheap ($99) bookshelves I have for surround sound TOTALLY FANTASTIC!

I bought the last pair that they had at Best Buy, and that's why the price was soo cheap. They usually sold for $399 for the pair, but since there were a few dings, and one of the side panels had a small crack in it (easy to fix, but I made a fuss to get a better price!) the guy gave me the two 1738's and the NSAC143 center channel floor model speaker for a total of $249 with a four year warranty! I couldn't pass the deal up, so I went for it. Later I bought the sub and the surround, and now the house rocks!

Strength:

Tremendous Bass, sturdy mids, and crisp highs.

Weakness:

First set of tweeters cracked after a few months, (but only cause they were experienced to extremely loud sound and bass) Replacement set has worked great. Other weakness: strange ohm rating i don't know what Yamaha was thinking with 6 ohm????

When I picked up these speakers I was looking for an inexpenive quality sound, and that is exactly what I got. The Cerwin Vega's I listened to absolutely sucked, I admit that Cerwin delivers with bass, but that is all they do. Cerwin's tweeters and mids are extremely weak. The Sony's I tried just didn't deliver. Overall I am extremely please with Yamaha's speaker for the price and the quality sound. So I give them a 5 star in each category. Please note I am only rating them that high cause they ranked the best in the price range I was looking for. There are certainly other companies that make higher quality speakers, but with an accomidating price range.
