price vs. performance. they have done one hell of a job for what they cost.

a little low in the mid area but hardly a poor performer!!!

i bought these when i was a kid working part time they were what i could afford then, but if you look at my HT now there still here. They still sound great. I used to run them off of an old denon tube amplifer and they rocked and now i have them hooked up to my Yamaha RX-V3000 and they still sound great. tweeters are very detailed and clear/crisp the mid are a bit on the flat side, not enough to bother me still sounds good, woofers are clean and clear sounding and do a nice job of handling low bass altough they are not that powerful, I would recommend that you use them with a seperate sub.

i purchased these back 1999 still using them. salesman tried to talk me out of them to purchse more expensive speakers that did not sound as good. these are great sounding durable speakers period.

These speakers lack midrange clarity big time while have well sounding tweeters. They are also not a source of bone-shaking bass (45-20,000) Interesting fact - Yamaha recommends 80 watts of continious power to drive these speakers - I had distortion at 40-50 (!) watts... Good part - I got my money back :) My opinion - Yamaha can't make desent speakers. But for $260 I paid
it might seem like a good deal for someone else.

First of all, the previous review is really not very thurough. I thought the Yamaha NS-A2836 was a great amount of speaker for such a small amount of money. Sure it didnt have "bone-shaking bass" but it has enough, what did you expect from a "natural sound" speaker. Also it is recommended that you run it at 120 watts continuously and not 80. This is a great speaker for a surround sound left and right mains. Great sound, smoothe bass, moderate midrange, and crisp tweeters make a great pair of speakers. Accompanied by a small subwoofer (in the $200-$400 range) would accent these speakers even more. I give this pair an enthusiastic 5.

I must say that for about $288 total, I'm completely satisfied.DVD movies and practically and A/V application sounds great; very rich natural sound, great clarity. As for "the lack of bass" issue, how much do you really need? For me, if I had 2 pairs of these towers, I wouldn't really need a dedicated sub at all. I would give it 4.4 stars to be exact.

The previous reviews almost don't do these great speakers justice. The NS-A2836 is a great sounding speaker when paired up with decent separates. Case in point... I used to run them on a Sony receiver(GX69ES). It was only a pro logic receiver. I was seriously thinking of taking them back! Then I put them on my Carver TFM-25 amp and they sounded great. Along with a Carver A220 and a Sony TA-N220 running the other various surround channels, these puppies really rocked in DD/DTS. I have a Panasonic DVD A-110 DVD player and a Technics DD/DTS decoder for the surround sound. The TFM-25 puts out 125 watts(250 bridged) @ 8ohms and around 170 @ 4ohms. The A220 puts out 110 watts @ 8 ohms(220 bridged) and 140 @ 4ohms. Finally the Sony TA-N220, which can be used as a very versitile 2, 3, or even 4 channel amp, drives 100 watts @ 8ohms and around 115 @ 4ohms. The TFM-25 drives the Yamahas, the A220(bridged) runs a Dynaudio Studio Center, and the TA-N220 runs my BIC in-wall 8" surrounds. A very economical and modest setup that can still bust a few ear drums. When playing DTS encoded music(such as the Eagles) the Yamahas really accent all of the small details otherwise unheard. Movies, well lets just say that they can hold their own when positioned correctly in the surround field! Overall, a very nice speaker... small footprint, attractively slim design, simple yet a sence of elegance, crisp and not overly bright tweeters, enough midrange to suit any one's taste, and the bass is just great for a sealed enclosure with only 2 8" woofers! Paired with a sub in the $400-$600 range would be perfect. I am running an ACI Quake on LFE in the surround mode only... the yamahas handle all of the bass in stereo and pro logic modes. These speakers get an enthusiastic 5!
