Strength:

Great crystal clear sound

Weakness:

Subwoofer defective

I just purchased a RM6600 speaker set with a PSW 450 subwoofer. I loved the sound of the system at the store (Good Guys). Anyway I hooked up the system at home (Pioneer DV333, Yamaha RX V496 A/V) and tried to listen to my first DVD (Titan AE, since it is decoded in DTS).

The sound was great until ... after about 5 minutes in one of the first scenes when you hear a few explosions (I guess this is where the subwoofer needs to kick in) I heard an extremly loud crackling noise coming from the subwoofer. First I thought that the subwoofer itself had exploded, but the bass sound was still coming from it. The 'crackling noise' is best described as a series of firecrackers going off. I returned the subwoofer to the store and received a replacement subwoofer a day later (out of stock at that store). I connected the replacement subwoofer and had exactly the same problem. I then did some experimenting to to rule out a problem with the amplifier. I also contacted Polk Audio (via e-mail) but received no response.
I will return the system to the store today. Needless to say I am quite disappointed - no Polk Audio sound for me this Christmas.

Strength:

Build quality, attractive, sounds much larger than it really is.

Weakness:

None so far.

I bought these speakers for my father-in-law who over the Christmas holidays expressed his desire to have a home theater set-up. I ordered these from Crutchfield after having listened to them at the local Circuit City. I mated them with a Yamaha HTR-5240 receiver and a Pioneer DV-333 DVD player. Going in I was a little bit worried about the speakers not being large enough to sound good in a large room(25x30). No need to worry! These things sound great! I would without hesitation recommend them. For $750 they can't be beat. The PSW350 sub did not strain during "Gladiator" and also sounded musical as well playing Vivaldi from my father-in-laws cd collection. I'm thinking very seriously about some of these for myself instead of some larger Polks(RM7500)...

Strength:

Home Theater sound, size, price

Weakness:

A tad light with music. Buying extra speaker wire for the sub setup.

Finally splurged over Christmas and bought the RM6600/PSW350 combo from Crutchfield for $749. I was a little worried that I might be setting myself up for a fall - as I have wanted a good speaker system for some time.

I was not disapointed.

Those little guys are amazing! The subwoofer shakes my entire basement, and the sound quality from the sats is very impressive.
I had also considered buying one of those all-in-one systems with a DVD player and reveiver packed with speakers for the same price. I listened to setups from Onkyo, Kenwood, and pioneer. Although those systems certainly represent a good value, they obviously had to cut some corners as the sound quality is far removed from those sweet Polks. I would recomend that anyone in a similar situation go ahead and bye the best speakers you can afford, and then worry about the other stuff.

In short - love them!!!!!!

Strength:

Great performance on music and HT. Tight bass unit

Weakness:

None for its class (sat/sub) and price range

What can I say! Great system, great price. Took advantage of the recent centre channel rebate offer from Polk for the system, but was about to purchase at the standard price anyway!

PSW350 Sub

I have lisetened to many subs before and as could be imagined, some are louder, some sound better, some sound worse. For most however in the real world, it does come down to performance/price. While there may well be others out there, I truly cannot say that I have heard many if any at all which beat this sub when considering BOTH music and HT. Music in particular is that much more discerning as it requires more subtleties in the handling of signal. HT requires more rumbling and hefty power output to 'place you under TRex's foot' as he/she passes by. What impresses me a lot is how well this unit handles both. Deep rich and smooth bass with reasonable headroom for most HT applications. I should mention that I do not get the hum when in standby mode as lots of others have complained of.

RM6600 Sats

Great overall matching for a smooth soundstage which really draws you in to the happenings on the screen. These units are apparently quite capable of handling the best of my AVR-2801 without any unit rattle/resonance. I attribute this to the sturdy construction of the enclosures as well as of course good selection of drivers. Music is also handled very well without the tinny sound sometimes attributed to sats. I am not going to say that I am hearing things that I not heard before in my music, but I have found myself faithfully listening to and enjoying old tracks without tiring of the sound. For someone more used to the free standing full range systems, there is probably no replacement for this in a sub/sat system. Having said this, I find that I can at moderate volumes stand relatively close to the sats without the somewhat annoying upper frequency bias which some other systems exhibit.

The above to me suggests a well designed speaker system with music playing as much a role as HT.

Is it the best sub/sat system - Most probably not
One of the Best in its range - I would say definitely so

For satellite speakers, there is nothing better than Polks. The sound is so clean, you feel like you are part of the movie/music. Purchased a Velodyne CT-100 Subwoofer with the speakers, and the result is an excellent sound system.

None so far!

I searched for a month -- so you don't have to! If you're looking for a sub/sat system for 5.1 home theater, do yourselves a favor and grab the RM6600 system. Even with the 350 powered sub, amazing bass reproduction, great highs, real "full-range" theater feel.

Center Channel not as powerful as it could be

I found the polk system to be well worth the money. I was looking for a satellite speaker system due to space constraints and am very pleased with these speakers. It is a terrific setup for home theater and really quite good for music listening. I tried wiring them both ways ( using the subs crossover or the reciever crossover) and found that wiring each speaker from the reciever and using a sub lead from the receiver gave the best results. Using good quality speaker stands really lets them sing.. Try these and you will be sold.

These things rock. I hooked these up with Denon avr-1801 and Toshiba SD2200 DVD player. The sound is awesome. Played Saving Private Ryan in DTS. The scenes where everyone is shooting is nuts. It sounded like I was freaking in the battle. I recommend these for anyone. You won't be disappointed. Trust Me !!!!!
