Strength:
good bass
Weakness:
none for the price i paid For a first sub i am very impressed, it took a little bit of tweaking, but once everything was set up this sub puts out a lot of bass, especially for 150 watts. for a large room i would recommend a sub with more power, but for a average to small size room this sub is great. |

Strength:
Well made, easy to set up and use, not too bad to look at and can be had cheap.
Weakness:
Minimal set up instructions, no calibration disk or other tools. You're on your own with this one. Bought this sub to complete a friends HT starter system. I read the specs carefully, found it was a discontinued item but it compared favorably to higher priced items. Easy to set up and use. Well made, superior fit and finish to most low to mid level subs. A good to great bargain if you can find one used or discontinued. Strength:
Good musical and home theater performance.
Weakness:
Requires conversion to a bass reflex enclosure, but this is easy. Discontinued model, so supplies won't last. I fixed the port noise reported by others by converting the subwoofer to an acousic suspension design, as Acoustic Energy has done to the redesigned version of this speaker. Plugged the bass reflex port with a kid's "The First Years" sippy cup. The sub is now well behaved and powerful. An uncommon value for this level of quality. Strength:
Goes so low Impressive volume Great definition (with time and tweaking) Value for money price (originally £499 when released)
Weakness:
I have heard greater definition/control in other subs - although in a smaller room - it may be they would suffer the same problems. I can't afford 2-3 REL's positioned round my room! Unattractive - the best placing is in full view - just a big black box! I can't help but think that the previous reveiwer had a faulty product, or had set it up incorrectly - no offense intended. But I have been using this Subwoofer for over 2 months and have a totally different experience. It takes time to set up nad can be boomy and muffled until the setting are right, but volume? oodles of it. My setup includes Denon 3802 AV receiver, Sony widescreen projector, Tannoy front floorstanders, centre and 4 dipole surround speakers. My system can handle volume and has to fill a large lounge (10.5m x 7.5m). The problem was filling the room with any subwoofer without spending a fortune on a REL. The Aegis copes admirably (to the point where my light fittings rattle!) but manages to stay reasonably tight and hit REAL lows. My only problem is the size of the room doesn't allow the sub to fully fill the room and my ears perceive which corner the sound is coming from. So, I have just bought a second Aegis Sub to balance out this problem - with the subs in opposite corners I should be able control the bass even more accurately and remove the only current flaw. Price Paid: £199 I anticipate 2 of these (£498 for both) will achieve more for my system than spending a similar amount on 1 sub. Watch this space... |

Strength:
Medium sized sub will not dissapoint first time sub buyers.
Weakness:
What can i hear a little bit of bass? honestly i have heard louder sewing machines. I have two words to describe this subwoofer. CRAP and AWFUL. I tried the aegis sub next to my paradigm ps1000. The paradigm BLEW IT AWAY... Not only for sheer volume and DEEEEEEP BASS. But the paradigm is alot more punchy without being sloppy. Buy an AEGIS if you want a little more bass extension from your system. If you want audible bass buy something else because this speaker is a piece of crap. This review is not the most intellectual in the world, but there comes a point when you have to describe somthing as it is. Similar Products Used: Paradigm ps1000. Considering another paradigm or maybe yamaha ystsw800. |

Strength:
Awesome bass
Weakness:
time to set up - Like most of the old generation... Big Without teaching anyone to suck eggs, all of us have a completely different "ear" when listening to music, and the pleasures experienced by one are totally misunderstood by another. So the most importatnt part of any Hifi or Surround system is the set up. The most musical part has to be generated through the speakers, and any good bass should not be generated by the subwoofer booming away at full db. Instead you should spend a good amount of time understanding the physics of it all, and set the woofer up to compliment those depths that your speakers cant reach - then the whole thing becomes musical. Sure when watching movies you need that extra thunderous grunt or atmospheric deepness, but a slight adjustment on the subs volume will make a difference. So to the Aegis, this sub can be superb, it does take some time to get it set right, and should only be considered in a large room; but forgetting all the purists jargon of speed and overhang, it can be most musical and sensationaly dramatic with movies. It can go so deep without effort, but if you have it phased wrongly can just boom. I have a large open plan living area, and tried one of these new MJ acoustic pro 50 subs, beautifully made and realy tuneful, but up the volume for the larger room and it jumps, which defeats the object. So if you need to hear the beautiful bass lines in India Arie''s Acoustic Soul, or the rythmic accompaniment of Diana Krall''s When I look in your eyes, or even be deafened by the explosions in Vertical Limit, followed by ducking the flying shards of ice - then get an Aegis set up properly and smile. Strength:
Goes soooo looowwww!!!
Weakness:
Can be abit boomy and slow at times, especially dance music, until well run in. I bought this sub from work where it had been languishing in a corner for several months and needed a good home. It needed several films worth of running in time and goof tuning with my Denon AVR 2800 receiver. Fits perfectly in as a newpaper table now, and I couldn't live without it! Slightly slow on more subtle music... I've got the AE Aegis one speakers. These are awesome speakers and have fabulous treble and midrange. Thonly problem is the bottom end is a touch light... Similar Products Used: None... |
