Strength:

Tight clear sound, Looks, Floor firing, Quality, Many hookups

Weakness:

No remote control for the level knob (don't know of any sub that has a remote)

The day I purchased this sub, I did not want to drive 15 miles out of my way to buy a good sub cable. I wanted to hook it up right away so I stopped at Wal-Mart and bought a $4.00 audio cable. This was a bad idea. The sound was not what I thought it shoud be. Before I blamed the sub, I purchased the Monster sub cable for $40.00 at Best Buy. This cable made a major improvement. Now which ever level I choose to use, I am hearing clear tight bass.

Whoever gives this sub a bad review is either comparing it to $500 subs or is using bad cable.

This subwoofer is perfect for my needs.

I am sure you know by now that Sears will match the low internet price. Mine was from simplycheap.com

Strength:

Home audio powerhouse. Great for DVD.

Weakness:

Seems to bottom out at high levels with bassy rap music.

The 12" Acoustic Research subwoofer has been a great addition to my home audio system. Currently I have it set up with a Sony receiver and 4 Bose bookshelves. I've found that this sub really shines when it comes to watching movies. Independence Day, U-571, or any other movie with advanced special effects shake the room with this sub. I would recommend it to anyone who is looking to step up their home theater thrills. The suggested retail price is about $400.00, which to me seems quite pricey. There are sights such as dynadirect.com that give audio enthusiasts great deals on great equiptment. I purchased mine there for about $230.00, and I think it was WELL worth it.

Strength:

Tight bass (for a ported design), goes low (20Hz), blends well with my Infinity Overture 1's. Can't beat the $218 price!

Weakness:

WARNING!!!!!!!! If you use a Carver amp (I do) or have effecient speakers, don't buy this sub! I had to crank my sub to max output to blend with my Infinity Overture 1's!

My Carver M1.5t amp does not have a sensitivity control and pushes my speakers with little imput. This is a hassle, if I had say, Klipsh speakers, I would not be able to hear the sub. If you have an amp with sensitivity controls, this is a great sub, probably most amps will not overdrive the main speakers like my Carver.
Before I get spanked about locating the sub in the correct place in my room, I have moved it around and checked response with my freq. analyzer. It is loaded in the corner and has to be cranked to blend.
I tried turning down the Infinity Overture 1's "sub" amp (150W driving 8" speakers in each speaker) this created a hole in the 80-300 response so I just cranked the sub.
Maybe I should buy another AR sub to fix this balancing problem. I give it five stars because it should be great for 98% of equipment users. Linked with my Carver and effecient speakers (92dB) I had to crank it.

Strength:

Bang for the buck, solid bass, construction.

Weakness:

Crossover, Deep Bass a bit muddy.

Unit is very solid. The sub is quick (even with an amp that is a bit underpowered for a 12") and punchy. The bass is solid without being overdone. Once I found a good position for the sub, it filled up my small/medium-sized room with sweet sweetlow tones. The $299 retail is high, but I got mine on sale at Sears for $189, so the price was great. Sure beats those 60Watt Aiwa "subs" they try to pawn off on everybody for $199 at Best Buy.

On the otherhand, I would have liked to see a bit more power on the amp for a 12". Even 50 more watts would help clarify the really low freqs. The variable crossover (80-220hz) is set a bit too high. I would prefer something like 45-120hz since I have set of fronts with pretty good bass handling.

My downstairs neighbors must hate this unit!

The way this unit is packaged is not very suitable for shipping. Buy locally! Sears matches internet pricing...

Strength:

Price, good bang for the dollar

Weakness:

No LFE input

After spending 4000+ on a HDTV and amp my wife curbed my HT spending. I had to cut some corners on the speakers. This sub is not as good as a 600.00 Atlantic technology sub but for 200.00 its was a better bang for the dollor.

When I first set it up I thought it was a bit weak as some here have described. But after I took a sound meter and calibrated all my speakers to have the same volume it sounded 10 times better.

If your amplifier has a LFE output use that and set the crossover knob on the amp to 100+ then use the amp to set what cross over you need. I have smaller bookshelfs for my mains so they do not overpower the sub.

Without a soundmeter (radioshack sells them for 29.00, get the one with the analog needle readout) you really can blame the fronts speakers for overpowering the sub. You need to set each speakers output to be the same volume.

Once they are balanced the sub sounds quite nice. I have the sub volume set a little past 1/2 way in my setup, your milage will vary :)

Strength:

Great apperence all around, simple controls, deep solid bass & a great value. I paid 189 plus tax, Sears will match internet prices.

Weakness:

Could use a more powerful amp for a 12" woofer.

I have read 18 pages pof reviews on this sub before buying i,& also did research on other subs in the same price range& above. I luv this sub, it was just what I was missing. The 12" in my front speakers were ok, but just not enuff. For the people who had problems or did not this sub, did not take their time to properly set the sub up. You just can not take it out the box & plug it up & just go. You have take your time & play around with it till you reach that sweet spot.If you don't know how to do it there are websites out to help you out, this goes for any sub or speaker. Speaker placement is very important for any home theater. When you decide to your sub PLEASE buy THX certified Monster Subwoofer Cable, do not cheat yourself. Because you will never know what you are missing. That is all I run is Monster Cable on all my conects. Believe me there is a BIG difference, so in short this sub is bomb.
