B&W ASW 650 Subwoofers

B&W ASW 650 Subwoofers

DESCRIPTION

The ASW650 has all the attributes of the ASW600, but is more suited to larger rooms because of its greater output capability, achieved by a combination of a larger cabinet, driver and amplifier. In this case the driver is a 300mm (12 in) unit that can go lower in the bass that its smaller sibling. Its capabilities are fully exploited by the powerful 200W on-board amplifier.

Strength:

Strength:

Very punchy, lots to power, no port noise, LOUD!

Weakness:

None.

My previous sub was a Cerwin Vega and I've been wanting to upgrade to something that gave me more kick and a more powerful bass than I was getting with the CV. The first time I heard this sub I was in love . Price and size of the cabinet was a big factor when I started to shop for a sub because I live in a small apartment. I had tried a model from Velodyne ( CVT-12 ) but was not impressed. Then I took the B&W home and immediately I was struck by just how powerful it sounded. As some of the other reviews said, I actually had to turn down the volume! The bass may not be as 'fluffy' (therefore not appear as deep)as some of the ported (this is a sealed sub)designs out there, but I love it's punch-in-the-stomach feel, it's power, and even it's ability to produce soft thuds and padding of feet on floors, car door slams etc. quite convincingly. Now, I was so impressed that I have since upgraded my speakers to all B&W 600 series speakers (604 S3, 601 S3, and LCR600). I drive them all with a Yamaha RX-V1200.

Strength:

Very controlled/Powerful Possibilites of adjustement Blends in well with other B&W products

Weakness:

None so far..

I bought this Subwoofer aproximately a week ago, after comparing it to Dali's SWA12 and Paradigm's PS1200 and some other products. I'm a little new to High-end models, but having read all the reviews in here, I must say that I can only agree with them partly. Yes, it is definetly expensive, but the extra dollars are all worth it. In this Sub, you get it all. Very very powerful bass compared to Dali SWA12, and much more controlled than the Paradigm PS1200. A lot of you complain that it doesn't go low enough. Well in my opinion it really comes down to the size of your room. My room is around 15 m2, and in here it sounds amazing. It has a lot of adjustement capabillites, and you can make it sound pretty much the way you want it. Compared to a lot of other products, it's an excellent all-round sub. It can be very presice and punchy, but is also capable of delivering that earthshaking rumble, which a lot find great associated with movies. Together with my other speakers it works out great: Denon AVR-3802 Surround Reviecer B&W DM603S3 ,Mains B&W LCR600S3 ,Center B&W DM601S3 ,Rears B&W ASW650 Subwoofer Taralabs OMNI and NEXA speaker cables So in short terms... when adjusted probably this Sub meets every demand you might have for it.. Music.. HT.. it does it all at an impressive level!

Strength:

good punch in the stomach price/performance no port noise

Weakness:

none IMHO

I use my sub only for HT and the 650 does a good job at this. I wanted the ASW1000 but it is to big for ideal placing in my room. So I was very happy that B&W came out with this compact subwoofer design. Now I have the sound of the ASW1000 in a smaller case. (maybe not exact the same sound, but very close) It gives a realy good punch in the stomach. I'm sure there are better subs, but for the money this is a very good HT-sub.

Strength:

Very easy to match with other BW speakers, starting to get hi-fi instead of mid-fi? Easy to daisy-chain another one in the future.

Weakness:

Expensive.

Not the cheapest Subwoofer (Price is NZ dollars) and not the deepest Bass out there, but that is not what I was after. The 650 is very subtle. Suited to music, so easily deals out on the goods with HT. My little starter system... Sony STR-DE545 Amp. Toshiba SD-1300 DVD. No-name optical cable Heavy duty, but inexpensice speaker cables DM 308 Fronts DM 303 Rears LCR3 Centre ASW650 Sub. Yes, the sub is far higher quality than the other components....what better excuse is there to continue upgrading??

Strength:

Power, clean tight bass, not a too big for a 12in sub

Weakness:

Doesn't go low enough

This is a powerful sub that is great for HT use and music. The bass is tight and in control, blends in well with my B&W cdm7nt. Doesn't go low enough though, but if you want under 20htz performance look to spend over $1000. Great sub for the money.

Strength:

Built quality. Deep, tight, control bass.

Weakness:

Doesn't shake your sofa as hard as the open port models.

ASW650 has a very rigid cone and thus take a long time to break in. The bass is deep and tight although it is not as deep as the open port ASW1000. The rumble sound and ability to shake your sofa is less than the ASW1000, but the ASW650 is much easier to set up. It took me half a year to fine tune the ASW1000, plus I have to buy a carpet to put underneath the ASW1000 port to minimize the rumble noise. The ASW650 only took a week. In general, it is more suitable for music, but does not produce as much excitement for home theather compare to ASW1000. The ASW1000 tends to produce echo and rumble while playing music. The ASW650 solves that problem.

Strength:

Great looking, great sounding, heavy, auto-on sensor, provides everything you need.

Weakness:

A little expensive at full price, heavy (but it's good to know you bought an awesome piece of equipment)

Oh man, this sub is awesome. I previously owned an SVS 20-39CS and was very impressed. But after having it for a couple of months, it soon became an eyesore. I must admit I was intrigued by SVS and its marketing hype. Don't be fooled the SVS subs are cheaply built and I can't justify spending $500+ on one. Regardless, I had to sell my SVS for a huge loss but it was quite worth it!! I bought the ASW650 for an awesome price and I have to admit I haven't looked back. The ASW600 was appealing but since I have a much larger living room, I needed to fill it in with a 12 inch woofer design. This box is heavy and performs like a giant. I really appreciate the "auto-on" sensor feature... it really takes the hassle out of bending over and turning on an amp for a passive sub. It just plain sounds awesome too! I have thrown a lot of material at it from movies to music. You have to play around with the settings for a little bit to get the sound right but it's worth the time and effort. The sub looks great and very aesthetically pleasing. The only request I have (and it’s petty) is a cool looking blue light in the front to show that it is on; but you can’t have everything. All in all, I love this subwoofer and am very glad I got rid of the eyesore SVS cylinder subwoofer. The ASW650 is a classy looking piece of art and it mixes well with any décor. As another audio enthusiast posted in audioreview.com from Phoenix AZ, the only B&W dealer in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area is Sounds Like Music. I too have experienced absolutely horrendous service from this store. The salesmen are snakes and have the cockiest attitudes on earth. There used to be another store that sold B&Ws in Phoenix and both companies would compete with each other on price. Now that the other one has gone out of business, Sounds Like Music holds a price monopoly on the market. Look elsewhere in Southern Cal, Tucson, Yuma or Flagstaff for B&Ws and don't give Sounds Like Music the satisfaction of taking your business. Too bad B&W can't drop them as a retail store..... or can they?
