Strength:

Deep natural bass, little dimensions

Weakness:

For the price, ..., ¡ I don' know !

My system:

NAD 340, integrated amplifier
NAD 512, CD player
Boston PV600, subwoofer
KEF Q15, speakers
Bi-wiring with Phoenix Gold 0.3 M (for the KEF)

The bass frequencies from my KEF are poor, (50 Hz), however the quality of this range of sound is enhanced when you use bi-wiring. But don’t care about this, take into account that the speaker is very little, only two ways, obviously Kef never sought to get deep bass with model, and ¡Good has created the Subwoofers!.

I bought my Boston PV600 for just $450, you can have a great (I mean GREAT) precise and natural bass for this price. All of the lack of bass from the kef is performed by the sub, with its 120RMS amp, both Boston and Kef work together very good.

The Boston (as most subs) have manual control for the crossover frequencies, so it is very ease to avoid the duplicity of bass reproduction, so you can manipulate the relative volume. I think that this is a advantage of having a subwoofer instead of having large loudspeakers.

This combination of speakers has a value of $800, I don’t think that you could find this quality of sound for such a price.

I’ll give a 5 stars for this subwoofer thinking in a quality/price measure.

I have waited 14 years to purchase a sub woofer and a home theater 5.1 setup provided the perfect reason for my wife to agree.

The sub is rounding out a set up consisting of all Boston Acoustics speakers: A70s (1986) for the mains, the VR910 center, and CR6s for the surrounds.

The system is using a Dennon AVR-2800.

The room is about 18x25 with an eight foot ceiling and carpeting.

The PV-600 is a great addition to this setup. We were auditioning some larger 10" and 12" subs with more power. Part of the auditioning was listening to nothing but subs with music. For our taste we felt the PV-600 had the best musical quality in our price range. The main competator was Definitive Technologies. The Def. Tech. pushed a lot of air, but we felt it lacked a musical quality and a tightness to the response.

Is an 8 inch driver and 120 watts enough power? You bet! The volume on the sub is set to about 2.5. With this we shake the floor and can feel the rumble of the deep bass, but it not a level that goes booming outside the house. My wife tried the setup on the movie "Top Gun" and while I was outside talking with a neighbor I could hear the jet engines rumbling away very clearly. All the windows and doors were closed. So I had to adjust the cross over and volume. Once done, the sub is powerful and flows seamlessly into supporting the other speakers. The additional bass is there, but does not draw attention specifically to it. However with music and movies, it adds a frequency and resonance not otherwise present.

The movie "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" on DVD was a surprise. There is a scene with a snow avalanche. The movie is from 1953, but with being in Dolby Digital the snow comes rumbling into the room with a force that made both or our jaws drop. The movie "Independence Day" throws some good sharp bass punches. The sub handles these with ease. The bass punches are quick, precise, and you feel them. They aren't wimpy or mushy - they punch.

The 8" drive and 120 watt amp will easily over power our sized room.

For the money we feel this is a great sub. There are more muscal subs on the market, but the starting point for us where we noticed a large difference in musicality was about $1,200.

I do wish the sub had a dedicated power switch (which is why I give it 4 stars - you have to unplug all power sources before attaching cables), but the instant on circuit seems to work quite well once everything is connected.

Strength:

Very tight sound. Easy setup. Size. Front volume control so you don't have to reach around the back to adjust it.

Weakness:

None.

This is my first subwoofer but I audition several models from Valodyne and Polk before choosing this one. I simply couldn't find a better sounding unit in this price range.

I bought it mainly for 5.1 home theater sound and I was sure I wouldn't use it for listening to music since I have full-size front speakers that put out quite a bit of bass, but when I put in Steely Dan's Greatest Hits with the sub on I was blown away. This sub adds as much to music as it does to movies, and the sound for both is very tight and controlled.

I'm using it with a Sony STR-DE835 receiver in a 15 X 16 room with an 8 and 3/4 ft ceiling, and with a DVD the sub literally rattles the windows when turned up to only 3. You won't find a better sub for this price.

Strength:

Great bass at an even greater price

Weakness:

Volume control

I recently purchased Boston Acoustics all around after being blown away at the store. It sounds even better at home!

When I heard the Bostons, I was hooked! I was a bit worried this sub (at 150w rated power) would not cut it because of the room size (26x18 with cathedral ceiling). Since the store has a 1 year trade-up program, I went ahead and bought it. I have never felt the need to turn the volume up higher than 10:30. This thing rocks!

It really complements the rest of the BA speakers I now own: VR650 mains, VRS Pro surrounds and VR910 center.

There's only 1 tiny detail that could've been improved upon: the volume control. In my opinion, it looks and feels a bit cheap. But the sub is neatly tucked away in a corner so noone will ever notice... It'll be our little secret!

Strength:

Clean, tight bass with great output!

Weakness:

None

When I first hooked up this subwoofer, right from the start, I noticed that this sub was much different then the KSW10. First of all, out of the box the sub was set to 2 on it's volume control and I was quite surprised how it rocked with such a low setting. Second, I did not have to place this sub directly in the corner to get a great response from it. The sub is awesome for the money and it looks great!!!!
