Strength:

Tight, responsive bass. Polarity switch. On, off or auto mode. Volume dial on the front for easy tuning.

Weakness:

Size is big. Annoying buzz heard even on low volume levels. The PV-600 was much better.

Tight, responsive bass. Really fills the room. However, very annoying buzzing sound ever since the first hookup. Very disappointing since I thought I was actually upgrading. Will go with the Klipsch line of subs next.

Strength:

Sounds good sometimes.

Weakness:

Makes annoying sound, really annoys me because now i know its there, thats all i hear.

Sounds good. Makes annoying buzzing sound that i noticed about 2 months ago. I had a Yamaha stereo reciever so i thought that was the problem because it was hooked up through the speaker cable. I returned both and i got a new reciever and sub and it is now hooked up through the sub output but it still makes the sound.

Top-rate performer. It's matched with the System 10K and sounds phenomenal. Just saw Saving Private Ryan in DTS. I truly believe that WWII took place in my living room.

Window shaking sub

I use to own klipsch ksw12 for about 3 month, with klipsch referent speakers. I feel the ksw12 is lack the punch for movies DVD, so upgrade to boston pv800 and wow! a big different in both movies and music. Have to spent extra 200$ but worth every cent. If you are a good, clean, and powerful sub for the price of 600-700 I recommend the boston PV800. I got mine for 700$ because of trade-up policy. I beleive you could get it for alot less.

Strength:

Great tight bass. No distortion even at very high volume levels.

Weakness:

I haven't found any.

I recently upgraded my home receiver from a Yamaha RX-V890 to a Denon AVR-5700. I decided it was also time to upgrade my speakers which I had purchased at the same time as the Yamaha back in 1996.

My original speakers were all Boston Acoustics - CR8 for front left/right, CR1 center, 351 in wall for left/right rears and CR400 sub.

I replaced the front left/right with Boston VR920's, Center with Klipsch KSCC1, rears same and sub with the PV800. I do plan on adding a second set of rears (probably Micro90's) as the AVR-5700 supports that.

I have to say this sub rocks. I use it for both music and movies. My room is approx. 15' x 12'. It really shakes the floor with movies and sounds fantastic with music. It obviously has a lot more punch than my old 75watt CR400.

I have only owned it for a couple of weeks but I have not found anything that I don't like about it. The only downside to Boston Acoustics speakers is that most dealers sell them for full list price as Tweeters does. Tweeters gave me a great deal as they gave me the full price I paid for the CR8's back in 1996! as a trade towards the PV800. I just couldn't pass it up ;-).

If I hadn't received the trade up deal I also would have considered the Acoustic Research subs with the sunfire amps (either ARS300 or ARS500 which also have great reviews here on Audioreview.com) as they are in the same price range as Boston and can be had for less on the internet.

Strength:

Good sound on movies and music

Weakness:

makes a loud humming noise you can hear from at least
15 ft. away.

I purchased this sub thinking that I was upgrading
from the jbl pb-10 that I have. While it does sound
better it makes a very annoying humming sound that
you can hear even over music and movies. I plan to
return this sub and pay a little more to get a
Def Tech PF-15.

Strength:

Very Tight BaSS.
Faithful reproduction.

Weakness:

None to speak of....the neighbors though may have something to say!

If your looking for a tight responsive sub, then your search is over.

I originally purchased a Polk sub, started at the bottom of the polk line then moved to the top of the Polk line...I just couldnt get that tight bass feel...they seemed sloppy..I guess its what you would call bass spillover.

I was about to settle on Velo. On the way home from work I stopped into National Audio Video and listened to a Velo sub...the guy in the store put in various types of music....the velo performed very nicely...I was about to put the Visa down when the guy said I want you too listen to the BA's...I though oh boy the ole upsell :(

But holy cow....the sound was tight, no trailoff of the base at all, it ended at the proper spot...the boom was incredible....I felt like I was actually in the jet with Cruise. I though ok, but how about classical...how would it do.....well let me tell you, if your tastes range from Metallica to Bach this is the sub for you....YOU JUST CANT GO WRONG. You wont be sorry !

Strength:

Tight, clean bass...good looks...easy to access volume control(on front)...on/auto/off switch...enclosed 300 watt amp really does provide plenty of "punch" to the driver...Boston name.

Weakness:

As of 3 months of listening to CDs/DVDs/LDs/...none so far.

I broke down and decided to upgrade to Dolby Digital and needed a subwoofer...plain and simple. I listened to a number of brands like Klipsch, JBL, and Polk among others. I decided on the Boston Acoustics PV800 with it's 12-inch driver. It provided a tight, strong bass and did it extremely well. The accessibility of the controls and ease of their use were very important to me as well. The Boston feature known as "BassTrac" gave me reassurance that I needn't worry about overdriving the unit...thus, damaging it. I'm listening to it now as I type this review and...well...incredible sound. The PV800 is used with JBL L112s used as mains...JBL L15s as rear surrounds...and a JBL S-Center channel. It's a little of the "old" mixed with the "new" but it works well for me. This is my first review and I hope it helps out for those looking for an excellent subwoofer. Good luck to you.

Strength:

Extremely tight and accurate bass with virtually no boominess.

Weakness:

None.

The bass is extremely tight and fast responding both at the beginning and end of bass notes. If you are looking for a boomy sub, this is definitely not the sub you want. Low pass filter goes down to 50Hz, and the volume control is in the front. A very musical sub for a great price.
