Strength:

Great subwoofer at a great price. Solid construction.

Weakness:

A grill over the driver would be nice.i

The Cambridge Soundworks Bass Cube 8 is a superior product at a very reasonable price. To the reviewer who calls himself "theEars": You seem to think that Sunfire and Carver make good subwoofers. These are just silly toys for little girls and boys. We, the engineers who make the recordings you "audiophiles" listen to, laugh at your ignorance. The subwoofers you idealize merely produce a lot of phase incoherent rumble. If you want REAL bass from an 8" speaker try a BagEnd professional system and hear/feel what it's like when a pair of 8's go down to 8Hz FLAT (yes that's right Paco) with virtually none of the phase shift found in your Carvers, Sunfires, and other "audiophile" systems. e

Strength:

1) Price 2) Bang for Buck 3) Size 4) 45 day money back/trial period

Weakness:

Not really any for this price, but a true audiophile looking for full (<25 Hz) bass range will need to look elsewhere and spend many more $$$.

This is a nice addition for a HT or music system in a small to midsized room. It does a nice job of adding some low end bass to either a satelite or bookshelf system. My room is 10X12 and it does the job very nicely. Obviously at only 50 watts and the pushing low end of 35 Hertz, it is not going to be the most awesome sub for the true audiophile, but for this price it does an excellent job of adding sonic boom to music and movies in small spaces. It does have a very slight hum to it when in the standby mode and will distort if pushed to its power/volume limit. But, if you need to have that high of a power requirement to get the sound level you need, get a bigger sub. It can be hooked up in to ways 1) directly with the main speaker wires or 2) via a direct line from a SUB OUT connection on the back of a digital reciever. I found that the second method provided the best overall sound with the least low end distortion. At under $200, this is a excellent buy. I could not find a similar performing powered sub for anyhting close to this price.

Strength:

small, works nicely with a small system, sounds pretty good with dvd

I have had this little sub for over a year now, and still love it. For 125 it is worth every penny, for 125 or less you can''t beat it. I am still a true 2 channel listener, but the little speakers in my bedroom needed a little kick and this one is perfect. I even tried it out with my main system, but it wasn''t quite up to par with it. Stick with my B&W''s straight. If you are looking to add a little kick to your system and are on a budget this sub is one well worth taking a listen to.

Wow, Some of the reviewers really have their heads up their ass. You cannot compare this sub to anything but it`s peers (the sub $300.00 price range). Most people will not dish out 3,000-4,000 for Velodyne`s top of the line (it is the best....no doubt), or any of Bob Carver`s Sunfire stuff! But if your looking for a way to upgrade you bookshelves, this is a very good choice! It will enhance any mid level decent HT system with a shortage of boom!!! It will not give you the ground breaking sound pressure of a 15-18 inch 500 watt monster sub from the high end guys: but it will do a fine job placed in a corner of the average (14x18)living room. I tested the sub down to 39hz, and it performs well with music! If you set the sub over the 120hz (let`s say to 160hz) the roll off only takes you down to 43hz! So try to keep it at 120 or lower. YOU HAVE TO PUT THE SUB IN THE CORNER TO GIVE IT JUSTICE!!!!!! If you don`t have corners....GOOD LUCK!

Weakness:

39hz, no polarity switch!!!! Over all a great performer for the size!!!!! PUT IT IN THE CORNER AND SET IT UP RIGHT.....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To sum it up: if your looking for a very good sub for well under $200.00, and need decent performace...give it a listen! DON`T FORGET TO SET IT UP RIGHT IN THE CORNER OF THE ROOM! There are much better products out there for about 3-10 Times the price, but it hangs with some of the big dogs till about 39 hz....ruff...ruff!!!! What pleased me most with the sub is that it works well with music and may fill in some the holes in a mid-range HT system. Who could ask for more in that price range? Value is 5....I would give this prodouct 3 1/2 in performance as in over all rating, but I can`t...Happy shopping!

Strength:

I've got this paired with two paradigm atoms (great speakers but little bass) and it has completely changed my stereo. Whenever I compare what it sounds like without it I can't believe the difference. I don't know how I ever did without it. The bass is tight, and it can get very loud. This was my first sub and hopefully the only one I will ever need. Definitely worth the money. Perfect size for my room too. Unbelievable what kind of sound this little guy can get. Must be placed facing the corner though.

Weakness:

None, so far. I've owned it for 5 months.

Get this guy if you need a little more bass and like good sound for a great price. If you have a huge room you should probably get something bigger. If you like blowing your brains out but don't care what it sounds like, you should put some 14 inch subs in the back of your car and listen to rap and drive down to Daytona beach, away from me.

BANG for the buck

Weakness:

My wife and I are casual music listeners. About a year and a half ago we retired my Yamaha CR420 receiver I bought a harmon kardon AVR20II receiver, hk FL 8300 CD(got lousy reviews on clunky mechanics but mine hasn't had any problems and sounds great) and CSW model 6s. A good but basic and rather inexpensive system (around $750). The major weakness was the lack of deep bass from the 6's. I just bought a CSW Bass Cube 8 with Monster RCA shielded cable at their annual tent sale ($150). We placed it in a neutral corner of a 12x16 room with large openings at either end. Wow, what an incredible difference it made! It pulls all the bass out of the 6's and allows them to concentrate on the midrange and highs for which they are excellent. The bass is tight and reaches previously unheard (or felt) deep lows without bottoming out. Best $150 I ever spent!

WOW! 50 watts.oes not sound like much, but it doesn't need to be that much. My entire first floor shakes with this thing. If you get this sub, watch the "13th worrior" ofr your first DVD. Incredible! earth-shattering! I'm one happy guy.

Strength:

It costs as much as a burger with fries!

Weakness:

The sound(bass)quality is atrocious,its boomy,undefined and irritating.

Seriously,if you think this bass module is a real sub you have to listen to a Sunfire Mark 2 or Velodyne HGS 10 to hear how low a tiny sub can go.I am talking real 25Hz with authority.

Let me listen to your moans and cries about how unfair it is to compare a El Cheapo to a $1300 unit. The fact remains the BoomCube 8 sounds like a wounded whale. No redemption in sight.Even the Klipsch ProMedia "subs" have more output and come with sat speakers! And cost little!

One advice Carver has a new sub designed by who else Bob Carver.I am talking about the Knight Shadow sub. This tiny sub can be had for under $600 and will put to shame your Cambridge designs. It uses a ultra long throw 10" driver powered by a Sunfire amp.No boominess, just good bass and built quality Cambridge can dream of.

So I say considering this NoiseCube can be had for peanuts its worth a FAIR DEAL rating, but overall its near the bottom of the barrel!

Strength:

Cheap, small

Weakness:

Faint hum mostly inaudible. Not really a sub

This isn't really a sub like one of those $1-2000 monsters that extend down below 30hz. Instead, it should be used to fill in the range below 100-125hz when used with very small main (satellite)b speakers. This gets a range comparrable to above average traditional large or floor standing speakers. As long as you understand and accept this the product does what it supossed to do.

Situations vary but I found the following got best results. Place in a corner with gain control set quite low. (The internal amp doesn't get driven nearly as hard to achieve a given output as when placed anywhee else and this location avoids any noticable Allison effects or "suck out") Set reciever/amp to speakers=large and connect it between the reciever/amp and the main speakers in order to avoid problems with two interacting crossovers. (I tried using the line level pre-out connection but got really bad peaks and valley in the response do to the interaction of the reciever's and the sub's cross-overs.)

I highly suggest obtaing a test CD with 1/3 octave pink noise bands and a $35 Radio Shack sound pressure meter to use as a set up aid to blend the sub in with mains smoothly. No mater how good I think my ears are, there two tools do the job better.
