Strength:

"Awesome" Deep Bass from these two (2) Oustanding Powered Subwoofers the PF18TL and the PF15TL.

Weakness:

None

I could not help but read some of the comments that some of the people who own these subwoofers were saying. I wonder what subwoofers were they listening to. The Definitive Technology for your information has won Five (5) Grand Prix Award for Best Subwoofers of the year. That's five years in a role that these subwoofers were judged the best. Tell me anyone has Velodyne subwoofers ever won five Grand Prix awards for best subwoofers. I don't think so. So check your sources out before being critical of these outstanding powered subwoofers. As far as I am concerned these subwoofers the PF18TL and the PF15TL are the best that you can buy. I have both and they are "AWESOME" addition to my Dolby Digital/DTS System.
As stated before I rate both of these Subwoofers a five in my book.

Weakness:

verry big and heavy

i only recomend this sub if you have a large theater room if you have a small or medeium sized room dont buy it , it will go to loud and blur your vission other then that this baby pumps out bass. it can play 20hz with super clean output, it's also gona cost you alot

Strength:

Foundation cracking, Earth moving, Gut Wrenching, Slobber knocking BASS! Spectacular for HT at a LOW price.

Weakness:

Can be Sloppy, Usable range 16hz-50hz at 1/4-1/3rd power.

So you want to ballsack rattling bass for under 1k? Want 16hz standing waves quaking your neighbors bedroom? No need to look further. I purchased this about 6 months ago and had mixed feelings. Compared to my velodyne fsr-15 it goes deeper however, that's about it. In the first week I had my neighbor pounding on my door at 11pm because of the POLICE "voices inside my head" song. Kinda reminded me of the bat against cardboard like the reviewer earlier...but it's seriously not that bad. You just have to throttle it back and let the 18 make minor movements. It has integrated well with polks and even better with KEFs with the latter being bookshelf sized. Steely Dan and any percussion driven music is decent..just don't expect KRELL or REL.

For Movies it CANNOT BE OUT BASSED for the price period.. The matrix, Top Gun, and MI-2 will all drop testicles that have sucked up into your body cavity. Heck my girlfriend keeps saying she wants a sub now because it rocks her harder than I do.

I have spent the better part of a year listening to a variety of large subs including M&K, Velodyne, Klipsch, REL, Paradigm, B&W, Boston Accustics and so on. Finally, a local dealer asked me if I knew anything about the Definitive Technologies subs. I hadn't but they had an P-1800 demo on hand which was impressive but still on the high end of what I wanted to pay ($1600). Then he mentioned that they have recently introduced a new 18" sub for $995 that used a different and in his view a better design but with exactly the same driver and slighly less power (350 wpc versus 500 wpc). The dealer claims that the new sub actually out performes DF's more expensive unit. I brought one home for week and I am truly amazed. This is an excellent sub with strong bass and excellent control - reasonably fast and able to keep up with almost any music selection. It blends in with my system perfectly and I can't imagine any sub sounding better. I highly recommend it but it is better suited for large rooms. They do have smalller models but I'm not sure they are as good as the PF-18. I

Strength:

Deep strong bass for home theater

Weakness:

Better for home theater than music

My system:
Sony STR-DB930
Definitive Technology CLR2000
Definitive Technology ProTower 400s
B&W 2003
Definitive Technology PF18TL

Adding the PF18TL definitely added the deep bass that the ProTowers didn't/couldn't output. At first the bass was overwhelming, but careful tuning of the LFE & subwoofer output, the low-pass crossover and the gain on the sub itself quickly provided a very listenable sound. Listened to Celine Dion, Jim Brickman, Mozart, Sarah McLachlan, and other various artists.

The PF18TL added an presence to the music that was previously absent, all without drawing attention to itself. The sound stage was seamless, without any indication that a separate powered sub was augmenting the sound.

Where the sub really excelled was on movies, however. I watched Dances with Wolves (DTS) and scenes from The Matrix, Once Upon a Time in China III, Wing Commander, Lost in Space. The PF18TL provided a thrilling experience - gunshots and explosions sounded lifelike and genuine.

Overall, I'd say the PF18TL is a worthy sub, better for HT than for music but not embarrassing itself in either application. I paid $920 at Stereo Exchange in Manhattan. Definitely worth a listen.

Strength:

More bass than anyone could ever need!

Weakness:

Big mother f&%ker. Heavy too.

For HT you can't buy a better sub. I've barely got it turned up and it shakes, punches, and bangs everything. Weather it's gunfire, cannons or whatever it never fails. The vibrations add such a realism to movies that make me get lost in what i'm watching. In 'Starship Trooper' ambush scene, when the flying insect gets shot down and hits the ground, you almost bounce out of your seat. For music it is also a decent sub. I haven't found it to be slow at all. I bought the last unit at the store that was an open box and paid almost nothing($489). I even got them to throw in an extended warranty(5 years). Ha ha ha ha ha, it's been 8 months and I still am laughing, what a deal. I'd have paid $300 more for it, but they started at $500 so what the heck. It's worth the list $950 but even better if you can find a closeout. Highly recommended.
