Strength:
Awesome sub when it works. Bass is deep and rich. Plays loud for a 12-inch speaker. Solid cabinet. Great for music and home theatre
Weakness:
Amplifier Reliability. JBL customer service. I have had this subwoofer for a little over a year and it has been serviced four times. The warranty on the amplifier expired and I did not want to deal with JBL customer service because when I tried to call them I would be on hold for an hour each time. Each time I took it to be serviced they practically had to replace every part of the amplifier so I made the decision to replace the amplifier with a Cerwin Vega HTS-12 (Fox International, Cleveland, OH -- $89 on Ebay). Had to modify the hole because this comes with an odd sized amp but modification was painless and worth the trouble. Similar Products Used: Dahlquist PDQ1500 |

This is the first subwoofer I have. I bought because of the price. It is $189.00 at netmarket and is usually more than $400. |

Strength:
available now at clearence prices, this is an earlier incarnation of the current JBL subwoofer with the baffled grill that is front loaded and has a level control on the front. The DPS-12 has none of these features exactly the same: it is a plain black box with a nice finish, that is floor loaded and has it's level control on the back though easily reached. Spec wise it is identical to the newer version and thus offers great value at it's current price of around 200 as a clearence item. Surely the newer version, recently well reviewed in Sound and Vision in an article about a surround JBL's HLS system, is twice the price and no real improvement in sound.
Weakness:
this 12 inch woofer shoots straight into the floor: if anyone lives downstairs make sure they don't own a gun. A great deal if you find one at clearence prices. I guess if you pay more you might at well go for the more current version. |
