Strength:

Great sound for the price

Weakness:

You get less than what you pay for

Model is ASW10-120B. Had the first one for three weeks. I went to switch off the amp and fried it. It kept blowing the replacement fuses. I thought that I would give KLH another chance. Returned it to Costco and bought the next one. This one lasted another two or three weeks. I thought that my amplifier may be overloading this somehow. This time it just hums without blowing the fuse. I can not get it to reset like described in a prevoius posting. I was relieved to read the reviews to find out that my amplifier is fine. I will be taking this one back to Costco again and will try a sony sa-wm40. Doesn't KLH test their stuff? Thanks for the reviews! I know where to look before I buy something else.

Strength:

low tones are there and amazing power for what it is

Weakness:

sloppy lows whatch the sub do things it doesn't really need to do.

cute but strange, not to sure what to think, it makes a lot of noise and can punch a note but does it sound like that on a pair of headphones I wonder. For the money this product is amazing. I don't really own it nor will I but I like to play with things when I look and test. KLH has hit a homer but you just have to make sure it works when you get it.

Strength:

Cheap, lotta sub for those on a budget, better than other "budget" subs in the price range

Weakness:

Annoying autodetector, amp must be given CDR occasionally to work

I reviewed this sub earlier, and my opinion still stands. However, after reading some of the reviews, I thought I'd pass along some information.

I've noticed that sometimes, when I try and play some music, the sub refuses to kick in on "Auto Detect." When I put the switch on the back to "On", the green lamp lights but still no sound. This happens most often after the sub has been sitting inactive for awhile, unplugged. (I keep mine unplugged when not in use out of paranoia.)

What I have to do is have the music going, then turn the sub on. While the sub is on (with no sound emitting), I take out the RCA cable in the back, then plug it back in. The sub makes a loud, undefined "boom" for about a second, then works. This "subwoofer CPR" procedure is simple, but gets old and extremely annoying after awhile, and it's not convienient for everyone to get to the back of their sub.

I also find that the autodetect turns the sub off if my reciever's volume is set on lower levels (below -50 decibels; my volume control's settings range from -89 [lowest] to 0 [highest]).

So, I'd still say this sub is great value, but don't buy it without expecting a few annoyances. However, my amp still hasn't burnt out on me - don't know what's wrong with everyone else's. I'll have to drop my overall rating to 3 though, as this small problem is rather obnoxious.

Strength:

None. Streghts exist only when a product actually works !

Weakness:

Product is unreliable.

I bought this product thinking "What a deal !". $99 for a 10" sub !
That was the high point of my story.

First of all the product died on me three times ! Yes, I stuck it out with KLH's promises of getting it right.
The technician at KLH told me that the amp had thermal problems, and that KLH was trying to find something more reliable.

KLH SHOULD STOP DOING PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT WITH CONSUMERS !

The guy at Costco told me, when i finally returned the unit, that every single unit they sold had been returned. They were thinking of discounting further. I told the guy about the reviews and all the problems and he said that the store cost to them was $65. At that price it may be worth buying, throwing out the amp, puting in a car driver, and poly stuffing the box. (Yes, the box needs stuffing, but thats not what I consider a problem).

I finally bought the SA-MW40 ($209 shipped from Crutchfield) and have been happy ever after. This 12" sub is five stars for value and performance. Please read the reviews for it here in AudioReview.com.

Final comment: "If and when KLH fixes the amp problem this sub would be a big seller for $99. However, I doubt they, KLH, will loose any sleep over this."

Strength:

Price, Plays loud

Weakness:

Poor build quality, Auto-On and mushy lows.

Like everyone else I saw this sub at Costco and figured it was a good buy. As it stands right now it is, if it keeps working. The sound was OK right out of the box, but is was a little boomy. To fix this problem I added some fill to the box and it sounded much better. I was begining to think that this was a keeper until I read all of the reviews below. The only real problem I see is that the auto-on is not very sensative, the volume has to be above normal level to keep it on. Considering the track record of this sub I would not recomend it to anyone, as for the performance and the price it is not a bad sub. I will most likely return it so I don't get stuck with a lemon, wich is a shame because I would like to keep it and use it with my computer.

Strength:

Cheap, Free Subwoofer box

Weakness:

Driver, Burning Amp, Non-Polyurethane Cone

This review is strictly to say thank you to all the guys who took the time to inform the public. I would much rather save my hard earded dollars for a REAL sub.

My initial thinking was "I'll just buy this $100.00 sub from Costco and replace the driver with an MTX Car Audio driver if it blows out. Maybe even buy a cheap 5.00 pillow for insulation." The reason I say to replace it with a new driver is because I have beat the crap out of paper drivers in the past: If it isn't polyurethane injected then I have to pass.

I was about to go get the KLH AWS10-120b tonight (two of them) and thought I would check one last time. The last guy's review just scared the hell out of me! And HIS was a B series. I have been checking this site every week to see if anyone with the new B series has had any problems. Lo and behold - another DUD.

I am strick when it comes to clean, crisp, full sounding audio and I now I am convinced that there is no way that a $100.00 sub can sound like a Velodyne, HSU, or Klipsch.

Thanks again for all of the reviews. As of today I am saving for the Hsu Research VTF-2. Check the reviews!

Strength:

Decent boom for the bucks

Weakness:

Very weak and boomeee, not accurate nor tight bass.

I recently bought a home threater system from amazon.com. It was the KLH 9006 5.1 speaker system. Although i do believe the overall 5 channel sounds pretty decent in a small room, the sub simply sucks big time. All it does is hummmsssss, i'st not accurate and not crisp. Spent about a month fine tuning it, but still cant get it perfect for both music and home threater. It still hummssss like crazy and is very boomee. If you are looking for tight and accurate bass, look no further get yourself a velodyne sub NOT a KLH sub. Ummmm when my Velodyne gets shipped to my house, i think im going to use the KLH sub as my coffee table =) .....Spend the extra bucks and get something decent. KHL is not decent, its plain old "cheap"..

Weakness:

design, quality of material, everything

Why did I buy this piece of junk? The price was low and that should have told me something. The amp died after about 3hours of operation. When the amp died I opened the box up. On the inside there is nothing. The box is about half inch mdf board, made in CHINA, and you can tell no engineering at all went into this sub. So why does every one continue to buy this cheap piece of junk. Because one or two people have had a pleasant experience. I admit I am
a dummy and should have known better. This is not a good sub not even for low budget systems. Go without or make a down payment on a good sub. The Polk Audio guy is right if it sounds cheap it probally is. By the way I returned the
Audiosource SW15 for the same reason it's crap. After two bad experiences I admit if it's less than 200bucks it is probally cheap crap and will not last. Face it a 99dollar sub will not perform like a 500dollar sub not today not at any future time.

Strength:

Very affordable
Auto On/Off
Picks up the lows you want to hear

Weakness:

Thump when the sub is turned off
controls are on the back of the sub

I am a casual listener, who likes to listen to music and watch movies. About a week ago, I decided that i needed to upgrade my rear speakers. I went to best buy and found a nice affordable pair of KLH's with a center channel for 69 dollars. While I was at best buy, I noticed the subs. I herd all types of sub's. I was very impressed with the KLH. I went home and looked on the web and researched subwoofers. I found this site and found out that most people loved this sub, and that they got it from Costco. I was sold! I went to Costco, got a membership and bought the speaker.
I AM AMAZED. This thing SHAKES my ROOM. I hooked it up, and I put in The Lion King. The fight scene between Symbia and his Uncle is Amazing. The bass shakes my room. This was a steal for $99 dollars at Costco.
Also, at Costco, if you ever buy a product and you don't like it, you may return it. They are cool and they are great place to have a membership with.

Good sound from a 10 in. subw.
Auto shutoff of course.
Variable crossover.

Weakness:

Emits irritatingly loud "thump" when source is turned off.
Instruction manual needs tweeking, esp. enlarging picture of rear panel.
Still don't know what the difference is between the RED & GREEN LEDs lighting up is.???

Purchased subwoofer from Costco.
KLH powered 10 in. with 120 watt amplifier.
Price: $99.00
On recomendation from old friend who said "it sounds as good as my $300 subwoofer!
Since I was going for "quick & dirty" (cheap) at the time.
