Strength:

Tight bass Small cabinet Enough power to use in a small room Good for music and HT

Weakness:

Doesn't hit the low-lows of larger subs.

Great compact sub with an even propensity for music and HT. Although it doesn't really hit the low-lows, it mates well with my Definitive Technology BP6 main speakers in my bedroom. Together they provide a great sound field with tight bass and perfect imaging.

Strength:

Powerfull, precise bass, great for small rooms.

Weakness:

price...M&K is kind of pricey

After listening to some different systems of my friends, from cheap Sony based ones to "state of the art" JM Labs units, I think this Sub is kind of the entry level into serious things. It sounds great when you consider the size (in my case also the price, I got it in a store where people didnt actually know what it was). I have found it difficult to tune it to the rest of my speakers (Klipsch`s).

Strength:

Good small sub for small rooms or PC

Weakness:

Not much compared to big subs or the Sunfire Jr but more accurate above 65hz

Cute and accurate for small room. MUCH better than the $800 MX-100 which is a joke no matter what you hear about boundary reinforcement, etc.

Strength:

Compact Size. Customer service.

Weakness:

Cheap plastic speaker terminals

I purchased my M&K VX-7 in 1993. I chose this one for size and because my listening room was not big enough for anything that produced deep deep bass. It has proved quite good in my system over the years. Last month, the guillotine plastic speaker terminals broke and I found that they were not easily replaceable because they were rivetted and epoxied to the power amp circuit board. The speaker came with a 5 year warranty and this being 7 years old, it was going to cost me some money to fix. I emailed M&K and they told me about their distributor in my area. I brought it to the distributor (instead of just sending it to some local speaker place to have it fixed). The distributor said M&K had extended the warranty to 10 years!! :) and for simplicity's sake, they just replaced the entire amp board with a MK II board under warranty. I was quite surprised and pleased.

Strength:

Amazingly deep bass for such a small box

Weakness:

Have to adjust bass level between movies and music

I was amazed by the sound from such a small box. Deep, crisp bass. Ideal for movies especially DVD. It blasts my room. I have it coupled with 5 Wharfedales and it blends perfectlly for an amazing cinema experience. I wish I could afford the bigger brothers but stuff is very expensive here in Australia.

Strength:

tight accurate bass

Weakness:

only 50 Watts. Small(21lbs.)

It took a long time for me to appreciate this sub. When I first bought it, I did not know that much about powered subwoofers or their purpose. But now after it has broken in (and I have calibrated my receiver to the correct Db's!), I have come to enjoy the quality bass that M&K creates.

I only use the sub for movies on cable, and of course DVD's. My speakers pick up the slack when I want to listen to music. The reproduction of quality LFE's is incredible for the size of this sub. I have some good cable running to the sub, which makes a difference on the tightness of bass, and I have come to truly enjoy my purchase. It only took me 10 months to do this. Would I recommend this sub? Only if you use it for Home Theater, not for music. I also agree with others who say this sub is overpriced. The Klipsch KSW-12 is much more powerful for the same price. But you decide.... Quality or Quantity??

I'll stick with M&K...

My dealer didn't have this product to audition, Audio Review had no reviews of this product to judge its performance, but based on product information and the reputation of M&K I ordered one anyway. While a small unit for a sub, the darned thing packs a silky smooth bass punch! I placed it in a 13X16 room in conjunction with a pair of B&W 601DM speakers. The sub very nicely "fills in" the lower end of the spectrum that the B&Ws can't reach. What I really like about the sound is that it seems true to the instruments being replicated. The sound is smooth and a life-like portrayal of the original. Some subs I've heard produce adaquate bass but the sound is raspy. Not a bad sound but NOT part of the artist's intent. I also liked the small size which belies the power this unit has. The availabilty of this product in an off-white was also a plus as it blends relatively invisibly in the room with light colored walls and carpet. The grille looks minorly crude for an otherwise very high quality product.s

I purchased this little sub in mid July and I have to say I'm amazed by the solid, articulate bass which eminates from this little monster. I have it paired with a set of NHT superzeroes and this setup blows away my previous Cambridge Soundworks Ensemble system (two passive subs) by a considerable margin. I am listening to Omar and the Howlers' "Southern Syle" as I write this review, and the floor below my feet is literally shaking. The folks at M&K really know something about designing subwoofers. FIVE HUGE STARS!!!!!

Strength:

Small size; decor friendly (comes in white too); tight bass.

Weakness:

Paint used on grill frame (black) is water based. Wiping my white grill cloth with a damp rag was severely disappointing.

Bought as part of a home theater purchase (see review under B&W LM1 for more info).

Originally I thought the unit was a bit pricey ($500) for a small 8 inch subwoofer. I keep enjoying the system so much that I now consider the VX-7 to be an excellent value.

When I auditioned other subs, I kept noticing them and thinking I was a teenager with a big obnoxious car stereo. The VX-7 just disappears. I know its there because it shook a glass off a shelf in the wet bar about 18 feet away. I placed the subwoofer next to the fireplace against the wall (3 - 4 feet from the corner) in a family room with hardwood floors. It produces plenty of bass. The canons in Telarc's 1812 Overture sound great.

I was a little concerned about crossover frequency, as there is no crossover defeat switch on the unit. I'm feeding the VX-7 from the subwoofer RCA jack on my Denon AVR-3300. I've played with the crossover frequency but can't tell any difference so I don't really know if it is active for RCA jack input. The Denon filters at 80 Hz, I believe. Currently I have the crossover on the VX-7 set to the highest frequency (2xx Hz) to minimize interaction, if active, with the Denon's 80 Hz low pass filter.

Listen to M&K. If the rest of their line up is as good as the VX-7, you won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Ground trembling Bass, Compact size

Weakness:

M&Ks tend to be a little pricey

When I upgraded to Dolby Digital last December, the sales rep I dealt with at ABT in Chicago, informed me that the one necessity I was missing was a powered-sub. Not knowing any better, I decided to hold off. In February, I decided to wear down the numbers on my credit card a little more and went back to ABT. I've been going to ABT for over 5 years and I won't go to anyone else. These guys truly try to balance high quality equipment with peoples budgets. I digress. After asking me what my price range was ($500 or under) and whether or not my main purpose was music or home theater (Home Theater), I was pointed in the direction of this unit. Boy did this round out my system. As I mentioned above, I have Bose AM5s as my main speakers, Bose AM3s for my surrounds and I was dissatisfied with the bass. This was especially the case when I went from a plain old Sears special Pioneer all-in-one to a Yamaha Pro-Logic unit four years ago. It was still the case when I upgraded to the Yamaha RX-V595a DD/DTS receiver in December. The boys at ABT told me that you tend to lose some bass output when you go to a surround receiver and the Yamaha's tend to be a little "brighter" or in some opinion a more natural sound.

At first I couldn't ever seem to get the bass adjusted between being overboosted to being non-existent. Many times it sounded artificial, but eventually it became better. I do actually believe that it needed a "break-in" period. The bass is true and warm, not boomy or muddy. During the invasion seen of "Saving Private Ryan", you actually feel the ground tremble during the explosion.

While I don't have much to compare it to, like I said the Bose bass module doesn't compare, you can't go wrong with this unit.

I'm very satisified.
