Strength:

Powerful Deep Bass, Good bass improvement for cost

Weakness:

Slightly muddy bass, Problems w/ hummm prior to proper grounding. 80 hz minimum x-over

I have been relatively happy with this unit for the last few years. The strong bass was a major improvement over the passive Mirage unit. The low and mid-bass could be tighter but it is a pretty good value.

Recently I upgraded my power amp from a NAD 3155 2155 combo to a 'Goldox 300B Tube amp'. Has anyone ever heard of this thing??. When I plugged in there was a tremendous hummm that shook the house form all speakers. I tried various grounding schemes with floating cheater plugs and eliminated most of the hummm by tying the chassis of the tube power amp to the chassis of the Paradigm ps1000. The hum was still very apparent. the most interesting thing was that the hum was still there EVEN IF I UNPLUGGED THE PS1000 FROM THE WALL. I had never experienced this residual humm with my NADs in the past. I suspected the new tube amp and didn't know how I could enjoy the new detail of this amp with this background hummm. The nice guys at Taurus Tube Audio in Newark CA made a house call and rectified the problem grounding the NAD 3155 (which I's still using for a pre-amp) to the chassis of the Paradigm sub. Now all of the hummm is gone and I am pretty happy. This unit would be better for home theater than for heavy music listening. I did think it matched better with the JBL 18ti speakers when I tried some Nordost Solar Wind speaker cables. Even though I run the sub in parallel off of the pre-amp , I noticed cleaner bass overlap between the satalite speakers and the sub.

Anybody who has been let down by the hummm from this unit I recommend ground the chassis from the sub to the pre-amp or integrated.

Strength:

Amazing low bass output for a 10" subwoofer. Great sound, features, and looks.

The Paradigm PS-1000 is the best powered subwoofer that I have listened to for under $2000!!! Excellent sound for HT and music make this subwoofer a terrific choice and should be a "must listen to" on anyones list. Excellent low bass extention 25hz, and a high powered amp 175 watts. Keep up the fantastic work Paradigm!!!

Strength:

Solid construction, will shake the house with the best of them

Weakness:

Too boomy on music and can be too boomy with home theater

I bought the PS-1000 V3 which is a nicer looking piece of equipment than its predecessors, but the sound was just too boomy for me. I had to keep the volume setting very low even with HT. If I only used my setup for HT, I would probably still have this sub, but because I use it for music too, I started shopping again and compared it against all the above - all in my home with same equipment. All others were tighter sounding in music and very comparible in HT. Even the less expesive PDR-12 was tighter and more musical. I think my favorite ended up being the PSB Subsonic 3i, but every bit as good was the Paradigm PW-2200 which I ended up buying because the dealer would not allow me to return the PS-1000 for a refund - only an exchange.

My setup includes Paradigm ref studio 60's with matching center, but the lesser ADP-170's for surrounds - all connected to Denon AVR-3300 receiver using mid-fi quality Kimber twisted cables (about $7/ft. type). All was setup in a fairly small family room - about 12' x 13' with one side open to kitchen. Subs were always placed in corner, testing in different proximity to the wall from almost against the wall to several feet into the room.

For the price, it's not bad and may compare favorible to more expensive subs in HT, but not for music.

Strength:

Gives you nice base wherever it is placed, solid look

Weakness:

Big

Subwoofing is all about placement. I had hard times arranging my former REL subwoofers in my room so that the sound would be powerful enough and enjoyable when playing music. With the Paradigm PS-1000 I found it easier. It gives you good base where ever it is placed (still some spots are far better than others). I use monster cable and I must say that in music this sub makes all the difference for me. I'm clearly just a casual listener because I don't know anything about slow respond and so on. All I can say is that this sub along with Paradigm monitor 7 front speakers makes music sound like I ever wanted without spending to much money.
