Strength:

Musical sounding, but can go really loud too.

Weakness:

None I can think of.

When shopping for subwoofers, I got a nice price on a PSB sub 3i because it was a "storeused" model and just about to be replaced by the subsonic 7. I had read several great reviews of the sub 3i so I bought it. I had some troubles with the unit I got(not being able to play loud before I got strange noises from it) so I got it replaced by a new subsonic 7!

The sub 7 has behaved extremely well since I got it. It can definately play loud, but its also a pretty musical sounding sub. Especially for being a 15-incher. Even in my awful sounding room(cubical), it can sound pretty tight. It needs careful placement though!!

About the review under me, Peter:
Mine was deliverd with plastic feet, rubber feet and spikes.
Instruction booklet told me everything I needed to know.
Seems to me the crossover works fine.
All knobs are made out of metal, and have a great feel of quality.
It`s one of the best looking subs Ive seen.
I have to agree on that the power cord looks cheap, but not any cheaper than my amplifiers power cords.

And saying this sub "struggles" at moderate volumes??? There have got to be something wrong with the unit you have got. : I assume you are using a Y - adapter on the connection, that will atleast gain you 6 dB(not in max spl ofc.). I also suppose you have tested the phaseinverter, and tried out different room positions. If it still doesnt go high at all, then I suggest you try out another unit. All other reviews I have read on this sub says it can play loud, both magazine tests and the other 3 guys that reviewed it here on audioreview.com.
Why dont you check out this one for instance:

I would also like to say that there are several other subs in the pricerange that are more than worth checking out, like several Paradigms, energy, HSU, mirage, velodyne etc etc

Strength:

So far not many! small box? light?

Weakness:

Wobles, only came with one rubber foot(4 would be nice), cheap knobs and construction. bad looks, make loud vibrating noise and crunching sounds from amp, came with wrong instruction booklet, full blast(vol 10) is quiet, can't play at all loud (yes it is hooked up properly), the crosover know is not even callibrated!

First off i have to say that this is a very dissapointing sub. i have only had it for a few hours and i have complaint after complaint. i tried out the energy exl 12 and loved it but wanted something with a little more power. well i picked the wrong sub. psb subs should stand for Piece of Sh*t Boxes. it came with an instruction manual that doesn't even mention this sub once in it! it only came with one rubber foot. (i can't use the carpet spikes on cement!) so it wobles teribly. the crosover knob is completly un calibrated. the volume knob is wobily and cheap plastic. the whole thing looks like it cost five dollars to make. so i was thinking where did my 1200 can. all go? not in the driver or amp as this thing can't play loud at all. it struggles at moderate volumes! the power cord it a skinney cheap piece of sh*t! i hate to give this thing such a bad review, but with this sort or quality on a $1200 can sub?
Unaccetable. but keep in mind that i've only had it for one day. it may break in and be good. i have 30 days to try it out. in thirty days i will write an updated review.

Strength:

Heavy, room filling bass. Great for HT. OK for music (need adjustments from HT setup

Weakness:

Kind of position sensitive (But my room is awful...accoustically. Visably cheap power cable.

This is a great sub for HT. It has handled explosions and all the various other LF effects effortlessly. My walls literally shook when setting the Bass Peak Level! (THX). I don't have anything sophisticated enough to actually measure the low frequency, but let me tell you, I'm hearing (feeling) things I didn't know was there in my DVDs an CDs before.

For a 15 inch driver, it does pretty well with music, but I have B&W 602 S2's for fronts, and they are very tight and fast in the bass category. At about 95 Hz cutoff and below, the sub fits in great, but any higher, it gets a bit slow and sloppy comparably. I'm still trying to find the right conditions for music and HT, but I'm very pleased so far.

I'm a bit dissapointed in the power cord. I'll leave it to the audiophiles out there to debate the sonic properties of power cords, but man, this thing is as thin as a desktop lamp cord. Not even a ground! I don't know if that's a Canadian thing or what, but for something pulling up to 3 amps and 1200 watts, that seems kind of cheap.

I'm new to this, so I'm wondering if there's anything out there that can help me find the best setup/position for this and my fronts. My room is oddly shaped (picture a 25' square room, cut out 1/4th (kitchen), open the adjacent wall (hallway/front door) and angle the opposite corner 45 degrees (fireplace). The bass is OK in my stereo "sweetspot", but 4 feet to the left is bone shaking, 4 to the right is, well, nothing. Very odd. I can't seem to get the really good bass in my sweetspot. Any suggestions would be great.

I have the volume at 3 - 4 . The highest I've gone is 7, during music, just to push it a bit. It still handled the bass effortlessly without distorting, but it just overpowered the rest of the music.

Anyone wanting to feel what they're watching, this sub comes highly recommended. If you want it more for music, you may have to work with it for a while. No doubt this will play hard and loud. Listening to a bass guitar go down the scale in a riff can best be described as "nasty". You know, the kind of nasty when you have to squint because it's so good, rewind, and play it over and over again. Pipe organ and Jazz goes great with the sub 7. Even electronic bass sounds heavy and realistic.

At just under $700 US, it's the best I've heard. 5 for value. I'd like to give it a 4.5 overall, but I can't give it a 5 because of the power cord and changes needed for switching from HT to music and back. BUT, that may be my room. I'll write a follow up if I find a placement that's happy for both applications. Give this sub consideration. You won't be dissappointed.

Strength:

Power, balance, control

Weakness:

looks, plug in

My setup is with Goldi main therefore my cross over is set around 63hz. This give the sub a range of 20-63 Hz. In that range it is awesome with in home theater use maintaining all the control and power of explosions (mask of z) and space ship launched (the spy how shagged me) and every test throwen its' way. In music it is good with 90% of the pieces balancing into the mains nicely. 10% it has to be turn down as it booms away. (could be some mixing differences). For the money this is an execellent sub meeting and exceeding all of the requirements of home theater easily it meets the music requirements though it is as fast as required.

Strength:

Power, crisp response.

Weakness:

No remote

Well. I wanted a subwoofer that could handle the most demanding HT scenarios ... man did I pick the right one! I've experimented with using the subwoofer cable and with running the front speaker system through the high-level inputs and the latter delivers far superior sound, especially given the quality of my fronts. The Subsonic 7 is capable of delivering awe-inspiring, room-shaking bass with no distortion nor with any loss of the crisp, precise response. I've yet to set it past 6 myself, and that had my son running from his upstairs bedroom to find out what had crashed into the front of our house! The Bass Level setting function on the 777 when run through this subwoofer is absolutely amazing ... I use it to show my friends what *real* subwoofers can do, as opposed to the muddy booming bass you get from a lot of what some manufacturers pass off as subwoofers.

System config:

Onkyo DS777 receiver (The THX select is quite impressive, btw)
Onkyo 717 DVD player (Gotta love optical digital connections!)
PSB 6T front speakers
PSB Subsonic 7 (of course)
PSB 4T (used as surrounds)
PSB 8C Center

I have not the slightest hesitation in recommending the Subsonic 7 to any afficionado of truly responsive, authoritative bass for HT. I do not use this system for music and therefore can't comment on it's suitability for that purpose.

I did notice that it seemed to take a lot of fiddling around with the cutoff, phase etc to get the sound precisely how I wanted it, but then again I'm a perfectionist.

My final word? If you're looking for power/precision for your dollar, look no further.
