this is my 2nd Rel I had the rel quake, which was very good, for that size, I recovered this woofer with speaker suspension problem, after doing the repair I am really very satisfied after a good tuning this subwoofer is very musical articulated clean, everything that you ask for a good subwoofer, I already possessed woofer "focal electra" triangle, b & w it was all just extravagant bomboum, rel miracles with almost nothing , obviously a product hi-fi absolutely not for home theater

Strength:

BEST 50WATT SUB EVER. ITS EVEN GOES LOWER THAN YAMAHAS ALMIGHTY YSTW800

Weakness:

ON FILMS SUCH AS JURRASSIC PARK III IT LACKS POWER AT HIGHER VOLUMES

I WROTE A VERY WEAK REVIEW ON THIS PRODUCT A WHILE AGO. BUT THE PROBLEM WAS SETTING THE SUB UP. THE SOLUTION WAS SIMPLE. I SET THE SPEAKER LEVELS TO SMALL ON THE MAIN, CENTRE, AND REAR LEFT AND RIGHT. AND I ALSO SET THE AMP TO DEDICATE ALL LOW FREQUENCIES TO THE SUB ALONE AN ---WALAAA! THE PROBLEM WAS SOLVED. THE SUB EVENTUALLY CAME ALIVE. IT DID NOT PRODUCE ANY MORE BOOM BUT IT PRODUCED A FAR LOWER FREQUENCY WHICH RATTLED AND SHOOK EVERY THING AROUND IT. THIS SUB IS THE MOST TECHNICALLY ADVANCED 50WATT RMS SUB IN ITS CLASS AND NOTHING BEATS IT IN THE 50WATT SECTOR. ITS JUST TOO EXPENSIVE.

I have this sub now for 3 weeks and have compared it whit 3 other subs. A klips hsw 10, a sony and jbl, and i say the rel rules. It''s diffecult to break in, but what sub ins''t. It blends in whit my other speakers, Sony ss-la500ed and bose 901 like it isn''t there. The bose purdused a lot of base but not as deep as the rell. My comment is, buy this sub for this there is nothing else around

It's really starting to settle down now. In the beginning the q50 was a little boomy and overwhelming, I had to change the setting with every CD I used.
Now that it' s starting to get run in , and I finally have it set-up right, it just dissapears. It sits in a 5.3m*3.6m room, in the front left corner, some 40 cm away from the side wall, 25 cm from the front wall. This corner was completely empty, so I was afraid of a little boom there. I just put a few piles of magazines in the corner, and it's seems to have solved the problem.
What it does ?
*It creates a bass that is so deep I never thought I could here it in such a small room.
*The bass output it makes is natural, it has a natural, real-life weight, nothing exagerating, but that depends on the setting-up too.
*I creates a sense of ease in your system, it doesn't seem to have to struggle any more to get the music in your room. Everything is just smoother and even less tiering (sorry, I don't know how you write this, but I mean 'making you tired)
*I don't know how it does this, but it makes the lyrics in music far more understandable. I understand words I never could figure out before, it seems better separated.
*Very big advantage : you can use the high and low-level connection together, so you can set it up differently for movies and music, and you don't have to do anything to switch between both. I use the low level subwoofer pre-out connection from my amp for movies, and the high-level is hooked up to the speaker outlets on the amp.
*Big disadvantage: it doesn't take any weight of the shoulders of your main speakers when it's running with the high-level connection, you have to keep your speakers set up as large, so they're working just as hard as they did before. For movies it's better, because the q50 takes the LFE duties that I don't have to send to my mains any more.

SO: it's the best music sub I've ever heard in this price category and the next. It can disappear into your system, making vast improvement in naturalness and smoothness without interfering or making itself heard. I do think there are better subs out there for movies for this kind of money, but NOT for music. It doesn't really have raw power, it's a music lover. As a reviewer once said:"marrying the beast to your system isn't easy", but take the time to set it up right (took me a week) and you'll never have to touch it again, you won't know it's there, but you wouldn't wanna miss it for the world. Good job REL.
Cheers,

Koen

I bought the Q50 1 1/2 years ago, when I was looking to change my stereo system to a home theater system. Never thought about a subwoofer, didn't even know what it was or what it was supposed to do. Read some literature, and went shopping. Although I like bass, I hate the 'boom-boom' kind of bass. Right now, I can't imagine my system without it. I have heard other subs, but nothing compares to this one. It adds a totally new dimension. When I set it up, it took me about a week to 'break it in', but after that, I hardly ever touched it. It's not always there(I set it so it comes in below about 60 Hz), but when it is, it opens up the whole room, it totally widens to sound. It's there, but you can't place it, it just adds a new dimension. With a good DVD(The Fifth Element, The Matrix, Saving Private Ryan), you rather feel it than hear it, it sometimes makes a movie even scarier, adds more tension(I'm pretty sure my neighbours must have several very local earthquakes when there were none..). Also with music CD's (my favorite is Madonna's 'The Power of Goodbye; not because I'm a Madonna fan, but because it has a beautiful, very deep, smooth bass) it adds a wonderful lower region to the music. And it blends in seamlessly with the other speakers. I have it hooked up to the main speaker terminals and not to the LFE output of my receiver(following REL's advice). I can only say that REL knows their stuff. Their manual (a small booklet) not only explained the 'technical' part of the setup, but also explained 'best practices' and gave tips.
When I bought it, I went after the advice of the salesperson. He told me that for any budget, REL comes second to none. And I can only thank him. It's one of the best buys I have ever made.
Bravo REL!!

I have the Q50 in my system for 6 months now, and it has finally found a home there. It was a little dificult at first to get the settings right. I pair the Q50 with tannoy MX3 in a fairly small room, so I got a hard time to filter out the boom. After a few months, I placed it in the other corner, at the right front of the room. It now sits on it's spikes, a granite plinth about 4cm thick, and the plinth sits on 8 screws that go into the floor, 10cm deep.
Wall distance is 15 cm from the front wall, 50cm from the side. The crossover is set very high, but the volume very low. The button don't have markings, just clicks. The volume is up 7 clicks, the roll-off is 5 clicks from its max. So yes, I let it sing pretty high, but it works best this way, believe me, have I tried.
It is extremely important to keep it from wobling, so take the time to set it up rigidly.
Still so happy with my REL, good job Richard !

This sub is REL's bottom of the range model, but even Jaguar and Mercedes have bottom of the range models...
I bought this unit in February to beef up the sound of my Mission 731s which have excellent clarity, but can't produce really deep bass(of course). The big cone, switches and dials all face the wall so it presents to the world only solid surfaces - a good thing when there are kids playing in the room during the day. It also comes with decent length cables so it's a practical unit to position inasmuch as these large boxes can be practical.

Set up is never easy as the main task is integrating the sub's output with your main speakers. I found the Q50 needed several hours of running in and in the first week I was forever jumping and adjusting the volume or crossover frequency. Once you are over that it's pretty easy and I must say the manual was very helpful.

Sound? I love this unit. It has to be said that you are at the mercy of the sound recordist, and tapes vary enormously in the amount of bass they carry: Titanic on THX-optimised tape is awesome and the volume on the sub needs to be turned down several notches compared with just about everything else in my collection. What impresses me particularly is the speed of the sound; it can even keep up with automatic gunfire, providing a really satisfying percussive thump to each shot. The battle scenes in Courage Under Fire are superb.

In an average-sized living room I can't believe you'd need more bass.

BASS...BASS...AND MORE BASS...LOW POWER CONSUMPTION (JUST 50 WATTS)

Weakness:

JUST 50 WATTS!!!!...ADHESIVE JOINING THE CONE AND THE WOOFER...
WEIGHT...SPIKES(OUCH)!!!

AMAZING...TRUELY...

WHEN MY DEALER SAID $ 700...I SAID WHAT THE HECK!!!

AS I TRUSTED HIM...I TOOK IT AND HERE I AM ALL SMILES...

AMAZING FOR JUST 50 WATTS...

I HAD ONE PROBLEM...I HAD TO REPLACE MINE COS THE WOOFER WAS LOOSE AFTER 12 MONTHS....BASICALLY IT WASNT A SEALED WOOFER ANYMORE... THE GLUE CAME OFF...LOTS OF GARBLING...AFTER A HEFTY ARGUMENT I GOT A REPLACEMENT AT AN ADD. COST OF $170!!!!!

I WONT BLAME IT ON BUILD QUALITY...ITS BCOS OF THE SEARING HEAT HERE...

AND YES...CONSTANT "TWEAKING" OF THE FREQUENCY ADJUST KNOB TO COMPLIMENT THE SPEAKERS IS A HEADACHE...BUT ONE THE SETTING IS RIGHT...ITS LIKE ROMEO AND JULIET...

ITS AN IDEAL THING TO PLACE THE WOOFER SO THAT THE BASS "BOUNCES" OFF THE WALL AT AN ANGLE...THAT WAY IT SPREADS ACROSS A BETTER AREA....JUST INCLINE IT TO THE WALL AT AN ANGLE OF 60 DEGREES...
