Strength:

Fast with control and it bleands perfect

Weakness:

Level if you need to move the walls

First of all this is an audiophile sub and not a moving wall one. It's build quality is excelent and it is really heavy(33kgr).It has all the inputs you want including the hilevel with the supplied speakon cable. The quality of sound is excellent with very good low frequency and good levels(I repeat not a moving wall). It blends excellent with my speakers and it gives them full range character. The cut off frequency is a bit lower than I thought(63Hz)and the sound is a dream coming true.It is fast with great control maching my stand mounting speakers. It is not a cheap one but it worths every Euro. My system: speakers:B&W 805Nautilus Amplifier:McIntosh 6450 Speakers Cable:QED Silver Spiral Interconnect:Kimber KS-1011(Select Series) DVD-SACD:Sony DVP-900

Strength:

Excellent integration with the main speakers especially when connected at the speaker (high) level.

Weakness:

Reportedly doesn't have the ultimate slam and power to satisfy the most hungry movie fans (not offering the "best bang for the buck") Not a local product (imported from the other side of the pond) so can be relatively expensive.

Hi, I wanted to share a tip for REL owners to further improve their trusty sub-bass system at low cost. If you haven't done it, replace the stock Speakon cables with suitable length of a good copper wire (silver wire would even be better if you can afford it). I tried the Radio Shack Mega 50 feet of Premium cables for under $20 and immediately heard better bass: faster, tighter, deeper. It has to be, as the stock cable looks like very generic zip cord while the RS cable is of much better copper and about 12 gauge. Constructing the new cable isn't hard; even I a non-DIY guy can do it. After getting the new material from RS or any other source and cut into desired length, I started disassembling the Neutrik connector after memorizing which lead goes to which place. The negative lead goes to certain place and the two positive leads can interchangeably go to two other places. Note the positions so the new leads will go to right places when assembling the new cable. No soldering needed, and the difference may astound you. Also, as with many high performance audio components, giving the REL a good power cord and clean AC power will only further improve the sound, or I'd rather say, make the REL disappear better. Enjoy!

Strength:

Sound is great! Best choice for listening to music!

Weakness:

The 'slam' effect is very good, but not quite bone-crunching.

After having demoed the stratus and the storm, I decided on the storm. It gave a little more punch and more definition. I definitely noticed a difference not only on the lower tibres, but also the mid and highs as well. It is still new, and perhaps still breaking in. I agree with the other reviews here in the excellent quality of sounds from rel subwoofers. I am still playing around with placement and crossover settings to see what will best fit my room. Excellent for music, even the guy in the audiophile store said he had one for his home system. My system: Paradigm Reference Studio 60v2 Rotel RB985mkII amp Rotel RTC965 pre-amp

Strength:

Hear&Feel bass "à la carte" depending on your filter settings. An ideal partner for (mostly) bass-poor monitors and electrostats !

Weakness:

The "spiked" solution for uneven tile floors. 3 legs instead of 4 could do the job without the risk of back injury or damaging your beloved wife's floor !

This RELationship is going to last ! The Storm III blows away the cobwebs (if necessary) and reveals a lot more detail then I've ever heard coming out of my Spendor BCIII monitors. At first I started with the ABC set on C3 (=49Hz). After 2 weeks of interrupted play (had to stop to go to work) I'm now down to B3 (36Hz). Each time I lowered the cutoff frequency, I got more "microsonic" detail, such as scratching chord changes on guitar, and, bass drums are real bass drums : you can almost hear the "cycles per second". It's hooked up low level to my Denon preamp. Never heard the modified organs of my late favorites Van Der graaf Generator (seventies !) groan and buzz like this before. And the effect of a Rel on the upper frequency region is astonishing. Never heard my Diva-for-Life Carla Torgerson of Seattle's The Walkabouts sing so clear and focused in front of my Spendors before. This overall soundstage improvement, which is mentioned in the instruction manual, is a real effect as a fact ! When I'll have reached the ideal "ceiling" setting on the ABC (I'm almost there), I'll hook "him" up high level to my Denon monoblocks. Thus I am looking forward to the next RELentless surprise... There's definitely something going on beyond 30 Herz ! For those who want to hear which sound engineer or producer pays enough attention to the bottom end of music.

I just wanted to add to most superlatives about the Storm III that I recently upgraded to the XLO custom high level cable (Neutrik Speakon) and it makes a very rewarding difference. Bass becomes further tightened more articulate, goes deeper and somehow more expanded, starts and stops faster. The whole system sounds noticeably more dynamic now.

Strength:

Taught deep tunefull bass without the overhang that others seem to have at this price point. Looks very good in fine wood finish. Fast sounding with intergration with existing system.Sounds good in pure music or home cinema applictions.

Weakness:

Heavy! I have heard Two in my system which sounded even better so bad for the bank balance!!

This unit was choosen after some thoughtfull listening. Product needed to fit into my Tri-Amplified Linn system which in it''s self wasn''t short of Bass!, But it needed to be fast, tight and tunefull.

Strength:

Sound quality. Tightness.

Weakness:

See Review Summary. Not a negative of Storm III (and hence not writing in this section) but in general use of sub''s in the audio systems due to integration with main speakers. Price could also be a bit favorable -- USD $1795 (may be 10% lower) is not exactly inexpensive for a single component in the entire system.

All the other reviews pretty much sum it up. The sound is tight, as you would expect and want. I use it with B&W 601 S3. The only issue TRUE audiophiles may face is true integration between the main speakers and the sub. This is really not a negative just for REL Storm III but in general somethink to think about when building a system more audio listening as opposed to a home theater.

Auditioned all the usual suspects -- Velodyne, M&K, Sunfire, Revel (its nice but in a different price range altogether).

Strength:

An answer to an audiophile's prayers.

Weakness:

I spend so much time enjoying the Storm III, my house is getting messy.

This is a follow up to my earlier review 2 down from this. I love this thing more and more as each day passes. Those two superficial marks on the so called "damaged" unit the dealer gave away cheap, are on the side with the controls, so once I was done tweeking the settings, I spun it around to the usual setup position with the controls facing the wall & corner. So now those two tiny marks are against the wall and I have a perfect looking unit. I do not know who the picky person was who order this thing; and who passed up saving $750; but I thank him very much.
Anyway, I listen mostly to classical and some jazz. The biggest improvement is on older or historical reissues on CD. They usually sound a little thin with weak bass because the old recording are not as dynamic for the most part. But this Storm has added a richness to these old recordings which is transforming. My Strauss "Four Last Songs" recording with Elizabeth Schwarzkopf/George Szell is now amazing. Ms. Schwarzkopf is now live on stage in my listening room.
I noticed with the crossover setting I like with my Rotel RCD900 CD Player, my FM Tuner has too much bass. The REL is so easy to adjust, I just turn the Storm crossover setting two settings lower for the tuner and it is perfect.
A lot of subs are not this easy to adjust.
I also has a speaker placement problem because of my room. The ease of setting up the Storm basically compensates for the room problem I had. And where to place the Storm was easy to. I understand the Stratus I originally wanted to pretty good also, but if you think you can save up the extra $700 for the Storm do it.

An absolutely amazing piece of equipment! With more than a little help from my dealer, we got this puppy up and running in about an hour. My dealer has a very discerning ear, knows my system well ( no surprise there, most of it was bought from them )and his comment after setting it up was: "that's the single biggest improvement you've ever made in your system". He's right. It's tuned to the ML Aerius i, and blends seamlessly when set up correctly. This is the FIRST sub I've ever heard that truly does justice to music. It replaced the Klipsch, not a bad unit at all, and the improvement was astonishing. It ain't too bad on home theater, either. Love it to death.

Pitch, tonality, power, it has them all in spades. Give it a listen before you buy anything else.
