Strength:
Nice hard bass, good freq range Easy to reassemble Awesome value The reviews don't lie..
Weakness:
previously mentioned booming I had my eye on buying a PB10 or PB12 sub for my home audio system for sometime (was skeptical about they're reviews), until a friend referred me to the reviews on this sub. After finding a new model for an affordable price on EBAY, I couldn't wait to get it home to try it out. Most of the previous reviews are very accurate, this sub provides room shaking bass thats is a little too boomy at times. I ran up to Walmart and bought a large bag of the polyfill sheets, and stapled them on the interior walls of the case. This seemed to clean up the booming a bit, especially for movies, although you will need to increase the sub volume a little more. I would still recomment either doin the modgepodge (not sure how well this works) or replacing the driver. Overall though this sub has improved the impact of audio from my system 110%, and was well worth the cost. If you're a low budget audio nut then this sub should be considered. Movies tested thus far include: the matrix, U-571, and SW Ep1, makes watching old movies fun again! Used with: Yamaha 400watt reciever Onkyo towers (150watt 12', 6'speaker, tweeter) Kenwood surround speakers Technics disc changer Similar Products Used: JBL 12' 250 watt sub (don't remember model) |

Strength:
Low cost Can be made to perform acceptably at low power levels with modifications.
Weakness:
boomy bass Low power, not to be used if you like LOUD CLEAN BASS. OK, I bought this as an inexpensive sub, and that is what I got. For 125 bucks I was not expecting nor did I get SVS or HSU performance, but I did get far more performance than I expected for the price. I did find the audio performance very boomy and with no definition, this varied with xover and volume settings. After three months I finally decided to upgrade to a $500 sub - but first I thought I'd try "THE MODIFICATIONS"... First I removed the driver, shoved an old towel into the cabinet, and replaced the driver. This did reduce some of the boominess of the sub but did nothing for the tightness/definition - so I thought I'd go all the way. I went to Walmart and bought a pound of Poly-Fill, and a bottle of Mod Podge. First I sprayed the interior with adhesive and carefully stuffed the cabinet with somewhere between 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound of polyfill, leaving the tuning port open. I then applied 3 thin coats of Mod Podge to the front of the speaker cone (not the the surround or the dust cap) and also two coats to the rear of the cone. After reassembly I gave it another audio test. To my ears the difference was quite a change, no it still didn't sound like an SVS or HSU but now the boomines was greatly reduced and the tightness and bass audio definition was improved. I will eventually upgrade to a higher quality sub, but after the mods I can say that I will keep this as my main sub for some time to come and when I do upgrade I will still use this sub as a secondary augmentation sub. I am giving this sub a 4 rating, mainly for it's cost vs performance value as I belive that even given its (IMO) audio shortcomings it is still an excellent value for the price. |

Price Great Sub after modifications
Weakness:
A little boomy without modifications I bought this Sony subwoofer at K's Merchandise in Feburary. It performed well except at high volumes, then it seemed to vibrate excessively. I got some carpet pad (the one where all different kinds of foam are chopped up and formed to a thickness of 1/2 inch with a plastic backing), completely covered the inside of the speaker cabinet using staples and did the "Mod Podge" modification as mentioned in previous posts, put 2 coats on back side and three on the front side. I must not have read the post correctly about not doing the dust cap, as I did coat the dustcap with Mod Podge and I have not had any problems by doing this. The people I talked to before doing the "Mod Podge" modification expressed a concern about the substance adding weight to the cone and making the voice coil work harder or poorer. This has not been the case, the cone is a lot stiffer. The result has been incredible, strong deep bass with no excessive vibration. I have noticed the bass seems a lot louder and punchier than before the modifications. The subwoofer works good with no modifications, but great after. The mods cost me $7.00 for the Mod Podge, and a carpet store gave me the carpet pad. All in all a GREAT sub for $136.00 total. Similar Products Used: Cerwin Vega Polk Audio |

Strength:
deep clean bass rubber surround on the driver
Weakness:
not so elegant looking, but for the sound it produces I'm not complaining This is my first subwoofer, and I've had it for about a year now, and up to this day it still makes me cry in how nice it sounds. It is exactly what I was looking for in a subwoofer. DEEP BASS. It goes reeeaaally low. It'll rumble anything in the room, including yourself. I stuffed some poly fiberfill in the cabinet with adhesive spray and it sounds a lot louder and responsive. Also one of the most important things about a sub is POSITIONING! I placed the sub in multiple places in the room, and if it's not in a good spot then you will not hear anything at all. But once you've found that sweet corner spot, then BAM! IT'LL BLOW YOU AWAY. I've actually had my neighbors call the cops on me, so yea, it's got plenty of power. It sounds like it produces more power than it actually does. It's an AWESOME sub and I highly recommend it to anyone of all music tastes. |

Strength:
really cheap, not cheaply made, capable of producing low bass
Weakness:
not very powerful, doesn't really contribute enough to loud music For 150 bones (or even less if you shop around more than I did) this sub is awesome! My only complaints are the fact that it is not the most powerful sub in the world. I would mostly suggest this sub for 5.1 HT if you lack a capable receiver or don't have 2 front floorspeakers capable of delivering enough bass. Although my floorspeakers may be louder, when listening to music you can usually appreciate the subtle sounds of the lower bass from the subwoofer that cannot be re-created with my "budget" speakers. This sub is generally out-powered by my 12" KLH floors when I'm listening to music, but when I am enjoying a movie this sub really shines. Since strong bass signal is not really distributed to my floor speakers with digital sound, the sub is more than suitable for the job of re-creating explosions from your favorite action movie. The sony is definitely a good choice if you mostly watch movies and especially if you have 4 satellite or bookshelf speakers for your surrounds. |

O.k. I have seen all the reviews here, and I think I can add some info that will be helpful!! I have two word's for those of you that have not replaced the driver in this sub, MOD PODGE!!! Mod podge is a glue type substance that is used in decoupage and has been used by DIY speaker builders for some time. "what can mod podge do for me" you ask. First get yourself some mod podge and two of the foam paint brushes from your nearest art's and craft's store. Next CAREFULLY apply three thin coats of the stuff to the front of the speakers cone, DO NOT GET IT ON THE DUSTCAP OR THE SURROUND!!! allow plenty of time for each coat to dry before you apply the next. This next step is recommended but tricky and therefore optional!!! Remove the speaker from the box and CAREFULLY apply two more thin coats to the back of the cone, this is tricky with the frame of the speaker in the way. If you try it take your time, it can be done and it is worth the effort!!! Next step, GET RID OF THE LOOSE STUFFING IF THERE IS ANY IN YOUR BOX!!! Next step replace the loose stuffing with the foam "egg crate" type sound damping panels. This again takes some time to do properly but is well worth the effort!!! Next step, put it all back together and listen to THE BEST BASS FOR MUSIC!!! AND HOME THEATER YOU CAN GET FOR ANYWERE NEAR THE PRICE!!! P.S. I have been selling high end audio, and building great sounding speakers for 20+ years. I hope this helps. Similar Products Used: you name it |

Strength:
fairly cheap brand name
Weakness:
sub par cabinet very noisy amp sloppy bass You guys have got to be kidding!!! Because of the large number of reviews and fairly good rating I went and bought one. Yes it has boom and is fairly cheap but the sound resembles the 15 year old snot nose kid riding around with a boom boom rattaling in the trunk. I was looking for a small sub (hopefully cheap) to fill the bottom end of my bookshelf speakers in my audio room. Yes some people still have audio rooms. I have a NAD c-740 receiver Pioneer elite 300 disc changer B&W 601 s2 bookshelf speakers So I only needed bass from 70Hz below I went and bought ALL the following from local stores: Sony SAW-m40 $200 Yamaha SW305 $220 Radio shack RCA SW120P $130 Polk swp250 $180 Mirage LF100 $275 B&W as1 $225 B&W as300 $350 Yes I spent $2000 (but I knew most of them would go back) All of the subs were broken in with Stereophile test cd 3 track 17 for 8 hours. The most musical sub was the B&W as1. The rest ranged from ok to absolutely horrible. It seems it is near impossible to find a musical sub below $300 As far as the sony saw-m40: Cabinet shakes almost as much as the woofer. The sound is not tight at all…the sub gives the same noise no matter what instrument it is trying to produce. It did take the strong signals well though so this sub is adequate if you want boom for your home theater but stinks for music. If you want a better (not much better but lower price) buy the Radio shack (RCA) sw120p. The yamaha dual 8in is also a better option.
