I want to thank all the folks that took the time to review this wonderful
sub from Sony, I think a lot of home theater enthusiasts would over look
this unit because of its price and brand name.
But this sub simply defies the laws of economics. A sub in this price range
isn't supposed to sound like a $500 sub but I think I does maybe even better
than some in that range.

I had a JBL 10" 100w for about 3 years now and I always thought that it was
a bit loose and muddy for my liking and with all of the upgrading I've done
over the last 2 years I felt that it was the weakest unit in my system.

As always I came to this site to see where the value is and I found this
Sony 12" sub and read all of these glowing reviews. So I went up to my local
Best buy to audition it, I was just a little disappointed with it only
because of how they had it presented. you could only sample music with it
and the sub was wide open on the floor, not the best place for a sub. (they
like corners) I wanted to buy it but they were sold out, in fact I called 6
Best Buys and 4 Sears and one on line store and they were all sold out! In
fact one of the Best buys by my house had 6 on hand Saturday and when I
called again Sunday before I made the 40 mile round trip, they were sold
out!

I found an online site that did have them for $169 so I ordered it and received it about a week later and wow did it blow me away, I put in the tank scene from Saving private Ryan and the bass is so low and tight that you can feel it in your bones. Then I put in Matrix with the helicopter scene where it hits the side of the building and it about knocked me back! I just cant say enough about this unit, I think its the best bang for the buck in all of the Home theater industry right now!

If your looking for a sub just go buy it you won't be sorry!

Strength:

best performer for the price point, all the power i need for my simple setup, performs as i expected a sub to perform

Weakness:

best performer for the price/ being compaired to MUCH more expensive subs...

it all really comes down to how much $$$$$ you want to put down for performance, maybe i won't even consider this sub if i had more dough, surely there are better subs for MORE money ...but this sub works for me ( i don't have good enough ears to detect every little hisses and hums in my ht, but i know what i like)...thank you all for reviewing this sub, i was lucky enough to get one on-line for $157.00 shipped!!!, for those who doesn't like this sub, you probably also spend more on your mains, recievers, dvd player etc. and i respect your opinions, i wouldn't put "H" rated tires on a Viper(ie using a sony sub with high $$$ mains),but neither would i spend big $$$ on "Z" rated tires on a Geo-metro...would you???(ie $800 sub, on a $700 system)

Strength:

This thing pounds hard! Rock solid construction, clean thumping bass. Very attractive price, does what $500 subs can and then some.

Weakness:

Nothing really!!! ...doesn't match my WEGA...???

***For that monkey who is trying to screw the rating for this awesome subwoofer, kiss my a**. Your mom should take away your Internet privileges and smack you silly.***

This is one of the best home theater/sound product I have purchased in a long time. The Sony SA-WM40 subwoofer can shake the floor in my house pretty convincingly. You get a very deep, clean sound with little or no distortion whatsoever. All this for the price of $189, or way lower online if you like that type of shopping. The Sony SA-WM40 subwoofer blended in very well with the rest of surround sound system. I really enjoy watching DTS movies now as my floor and ceiling rumbles! This is a very powerful subwoofer and an affordable price. No other subwoofer comes close in this price range. Good job Sony!

Clean, powerful bass

Weakness:

None, especially for this price!

This is a great sub, well worth the $130 I paid for it at Sears. Amazing deal! It's definitely worth much more. I couldn't justify buying a $400 sub after using this beast.

Great sub, all the reviews on this were right on!

Strength:

Good quality, value.

I bought this after returning two KLH's to Costo after both amps quit, the first within a week and the second within 2 months. Then tried an Audio source SW10 which really didn't have much punch at all, just sort of made a pathetic background rumble. Listen to a few at BestBuy, always hard to tell in the store but the Sony sounded like it had a solid kick and the price was low. Got it home, sounded muffled while I was setting the crossover and gain but standing back it sounded solid with music. Then watched depth charge scenes from DVD Das Boot and was impressed how much better the movie it sounded than with the Audio Source. I think this Sony is a good choice for a larger room. I haven't listened to many high end subwoofers but for the price I feel this one can't be beat.

Ground shaking bass, this sub can go down verry low
i tested it at 17 hz this sub sounds best around 20 hz to 25 hz

Weakness:

none

when i first bought this sub and heard it i thought wow sony did a awesome job on building this subwoofer.
i tested this sub at 20 hz at 95 dB at 6 feet away and 25 hz at 110 db at 6 feet away and 30 hz at 112 db at 3 feet away without any distortion.this sub sounds just like my Klipsch KSW 12 . this sony subwoofer puts out ground shaking bass with room filling bass, this sub can also go verry loud
i love this sub the reason it goes so loud is that my home theater room is pretty small but when i put the sub in my large living room it whent pretty loud to .
if your looking for a low cost sub buy this one some professinal audio reviewers said this sub sound just as good as subs costing up to $500

Strength:

Unbelievable sound for the price. Deep, powerful bass. Excellent build quality.

Weakness:

Nothing at this price.

Have heard about this sub for quite some time now, and have been looking for a store that actually has it in stock for a few weeks. Finally found an internet retailer that has it for US$160 (plus shipping..total cost about $190).

This sub blew me away. I have heard subs costing over $500 that can't even touch this Sony model. Its frequency response is flat almost all the way down to 20Hz, which is amazing for this price. You would have to put down a considerable amount more to get a better sounding sub.

Build quality is excellent. The whole unit is very solid, and the amp runs very cool.

I honestly did not expect a product like this from Sony. It blends in well with my system (almost exclusively JBL), and I am very happy with this sub. I have a few friends with more expensive subs that I know will be a bit annoyed to hear this beauty!

A few concerns:

The power cord is not user-replacable.
The gain level has to be set to a considerable amount before the sub "comes alive." This is most likely because of the limitations I have in placing this product (I live in a college dormitory, and space is, well, limited to say the least).

Do yourself a favor. If you are even just considering a low cost subwoofer, buy this product NOW. I guarantee you won't regret it.
