Strength:

Impressive at first when you dont have any good subs to compate to

Weakness:

As soon as you get a real quality sub you wake up.The bass is colored and far from defined

I took this sub for a test drive if you will and I was impressed by whay I heard. And one friend told me to compare this unit to Paradigm.I was in shock, the Paradigm 2200 blew the Sony six feet under.More detail and the boominess was gone. And the power, wow.I returned the Sony.My Paradigm cost me more but it was money well spent.

Attention Sony Sub Owners...wanna tighten up and broaden that bass? Wanna make your Sony Sub worthy for music? Well, over at hometheaterforum.com, some folks have been experimenting with their sub. One member took his apart, looked around inside, and decided to buy some POLYFILL. He generously filled his sub with polyfill and carefully screwed the cabinet back together, and it was no surprise that it sounded much better. Here's the root of this tweak:

Strength:

everything

Weakness:

nothing

Just to clarify the power ratings on this product (Canadian model vs. American model), they are the SAME subwoofer! I called up Sony, and they clarified that the Sony.ca website has the power rated at MAX (150w), and the Sony.com website has the power rated at RMS (120w). They are the same subwoofer. I own this sub (in Canada), and in the manual and on the box it is rated at 120w RMS.

Strength:

This is a price to please! For the value, the Sony SA-WM40 is unbeatable.

Weakness:

Unatractive! The bass won't cave in your chest!!!

Ok, here is the deal. I bought this sub as a temporary solution to being bassless in my Home Theater. I have an SVS on order from www.svsubwoofers.com Unfortunatly they are backed up and I still wont see my sub for some time to come. So, I read the reviews on the home theater forum and there were a lot of people raving about this sub and the value in price. "What the hell", I thought, so I ran out and bought one.

At first glance, I hated this thing. It is your basic average sub, and nothing to special other than the price! This is not an atractive sub either, but if it does the trick, then thats all you need. I was pretty psyched to get it hooked up, and I powered the baby up to my Denon 3801. To my surprize I was dissapointed. It sounded terrible! However, I did decided to give it a chance! I can always return it, right?

Well, after a week or so, it started to break in nicely. The bass became a little bit tighter and the sound cleared up a lot. It isn't a powerful sub though, at least not with my setup. I put a $200 sub on a Denon 3801 with Energy C-6 speakers, Encore surrounds and the AC-300 center channel. So, matching this sub in that setup just doesn't combine all that well.

Ok, so by now it sounds like I hate this sub! That is far from the truth. I am actually impressed with the little beast. As I stated above, this sub takes some time to break in. I watch roughly 35 hours in movies a week, plus music is on constantly. I'd say it roughly took the sub at least 40-50 hours of hard use before it broke in and started to sound good. But when it did, I was amazed! Although, the bass doesn't pierce through your chest like some subs do, for the price you can't beat it!

As a quick summary and opinion... I'd reccomend giving this sub a fair chance before you make an opinion. It isn't the greatest peice in the world, but I'd say it compares with the entry level of Velodyne's, and Energy subs. This sub is definitly worth the price. I've heard $400-$500 subs that sound worse than this, so I'd easily pay $400 for the Sony. The bass is tight and clean, but needs it's time to break in before it cleans up. So, if you are looking for a nice sub to add to your system at a GREAT PRICE... I think you've found it with the Sony.

Give it a chance, check it out! If you are thinking about spending anything in the $500 range, I'd definitly start here first.

Strength:

Amazing, clean bass for the price! Best budget sub out there...PERIOD!

Weakness:

None

I have no idea what Frankie from Penn was thinking. He wants to check out different subs before proceeding with his project..that's cool..., Well, he listens to it (Sony) at the store, hates it, THEN buys it, TAKES IT HOME to connect it to his supposed system which consists of speakers that could be worth $900 to $10,000 a pair (he didn't say what model, but check out audioreviews site for the brands and their price range),and amplifiers that range in price from $2000-$14,000 (again he didn't mention what model he had, but see them listed at audioreview)

NOW, he expects this $129 sub to perform a miracle there, and blow him away with his supposed system!? Come on!! What's even funnier, he absolutely hates the way it sounds at home (and the store), THEN wastes more time taking it to a lab to analyze it!!! Geeeez!

I find his review quite suspect...Anyway, this sub has amazing, clean, deep bass. He says it has a poor design all around? No way. Amplifier distortion?? HUH??..no way... This baby is solid as a rock, and packs an amazing punch...I have yet to notice all the enclosure, port problems he claims to have.

Folks, if you want a great sub for $129 (found here:http://www.inetshopping.com/products/speaker.htm

get this sub!! See all the other glowing reviews and you'll know what I mean.

Unfortunately I paid full price at BB because I didn't know about Inet.... :o(

Strength:

120 watt amp, 12" driver

Weakness:

Paper cone, distortion at medium levels, frequencys roll off around 35hz, verry boomy, verry verry crappy for music, placement is vital, overall this sub is junk.

This sub licks for music i could not belive how boomy this unit was.
When i played some classic rock cd's the bass was distorting at low levels.
If your looking for a overall music sub dont buy this get something like a Paradigm PDR-10 which i just bought it goes way deeper has tighter bass and plays cleaner and louder.
I hate this sony sub it was a waste of my money.

Thanks to those that mentioned the inetshopping.com deal along with Sears price matching policy! I was about to go spend $180 on this sub at Best Buy - saved 50 bucks right there!
I'm going to reiterate what most people are saying here:
This sub works great for movies but just doesn't sound quite right for music.
Saving Private Ryan, T2, even the horse stampedes in Disney's Mulan sound fantastic and shake the couch & walls!
I turn it down for music to where it just adds some bottom end and it sounds OK, but if you're mostly interested in music, I'd look for a different sub.
5 Stars for Value because you can't find anything this inexpensive.
4 Stars Overall since it's not great for music.

Also verry powerful bass it does a good job of shaking the doors & windows & walls ect.... PRICE PRICE

Weakness:

I said to myself buy this sub buy it.
And thats just what i did.
And i'm glad i did cause it has deep clean bass.
( Plays deeper and louder the jbl, klipsch, & ar )
The bass was also verry clean & smooth.
It also performs well for music to unlike most people say this sub is boomey for music well all you have to do is set the crossover at 50hz and it will take away all the boomys.
I cant belive how loud this goes to for the price you cant beat this sun.
