Strength:

Strong, deep base for small to moderate sized room and with minor mod can be excellent for HT and music both.

Weakness:

For the price (even not for the price) you gotta be kidding.

I have been listening to and dealing with audio and video equipment for as long as I can remember and I have always liked strong clear bass. Of course this is just a part of the total listening experience, but also very important. I have also designed and built a number of different enclosures, including subwoofers, active and passive. This time I decided to take a short cut because it takes so long to build a really good one, and it's expensive too. All I wanted was a sub to fill out the sound in my guest house stereo system. This is not a surround sytem, it's just for music (so far). Now I've read a lot of these reviews and taken in the good with the bad, although the bad was usually written by those who THINK they're experts, but really could never afford to be one, or they simply had a tin ear or couldn't be satisfied by Klipshhorns pushed by 500 watts. Folks, let me tell you this, you cannot buy a sub nearly this good a two or three times the price. The first thing I did was unpack my new Sony,(I bought it from a private party, but it is brand new, but that's another story) and proceeded to put in appoximatly 16 oz. of polyfill. I researched this extensively, and this is the way to go. This single mod will make this sub much tighter and deeper buy fooling the driver into thinking it's in a 45% bigger enclosure. I then took it out and hooked it up to my system. To give you reference of what I have hooked together: Carver C-5 Dual Zone Preamp, Carver M-500T Amp and a single CD sony Player. Now you will probably think the speakers are the weak link, but this is why the sub was added. They are four Yamaha NS-635A three ways. If you are not familiar, they are a three way design with an 8 inch woofer with the low cutoff at 90hz. Okay, now this is all hooked together and with minor crossover and volume tweaking on the subs controls, VIOLA, we have an excellent overall balanced sound. The sub blends smoothly with the Yamahas and is very tight and will go extreamly deep. My actual review here is this: You cannot touch this sub for the money at three times the cost. I have listened to many subs in many different setups, aome costing so much you could buy a house, and yes, there are some that are better, tighter, and deeper out there. If a two hundred dollar sub was as good as it gets, there would be a lot of high end companys out of the sub bu

Ok guys I dont know whats the top price these things are selling for but a friend of mine just paid 180 totalincluding shipping from ETronics. Well I'm a member of MySony.com a rewards program offered by Sony to consumers for looking at offers on their websites and their affiliates websites. The more you look the more you earn points to buy things cheaper. Well they just happen to have the SA-WM40 on their rewards program for 150.00 shipped (that means including shipping) The only catch is you have to look at offers made by sony and earn 2000 points. Go check it out because while I dont own this sub I good friend of mine does. It ant bad for the money.

I know a lot of reviews say Everything.. and well they aren't lying... Trust Me!!

Weakness:

It's heavy..lol... 33 pounds... but hey... its 33 pounds of coolness... so there are no weakness

Ok... well i have read like almost every review on this site and well since there was like 260 reviews that has to say something about how good this sub must be since this sub has the most reviews out of the whole website. I bought this sub today and seriously.. i hook it up... pop in The Fast and The Furious... and it was better then the theatre.... this sub just made the Movie come to life. This sub is so worth the money that u spend on it. Like i can describe how happy i was when i got it and listened to it. If people say it sounds better doing poly fill to it i can;t believe it will sound better. My neighbours called me and told me to turn it down... So Highly Recommended to buy this sub

I was in the market looking for a subwoofer to complement my home theater system, when I stumbled across this website. I'm very happy I did. The first thing I noticed about this sub were the good number of reviews it had (w/over 270+ reviews, there's gotta be some credibility). Here's my take: All the positive comments and good advice I've read about it were TRUE!!! Ran it off a high-end Yamaha receiver, with polk mains/centers/surround, and it literally shook the HOUSE! Queued it to the tomb fight scene in Lord of the Rings...scared the dog/made him tremble & pee! Tried it with an acoustically challenging Chick Corea cd, and it brought a tear to my eye. HANDS DOWN most bang for the buck! Couple of MUSTS when deciding to buy this bad boy: 1) As recommended in other reviews, add polyfil fiber to tighten the bass. Can clearly hear/feel the boomy-ness if you don't. 2) If you live close to a Sears and live off of McDonald's $0.99 Big Mac deals, use the internet to find you the lowest price and have Sears match it. Make sure you bring copies of the website, with a good contact phone #, and don't forget to include shipping costs.

Strength:

AV performance, excellent price performance ratio, shakes room easily, looks neat, user friendly, good build quality for the money, uses rubber roll surround woofer that will last 20+ years over other foam ones, 3 year warranty, clever engineering design with use of very long flared slot port to reduce port noise but increase bass extension.

Weakness:

Not so good for music, one note bass compared to my DIY quality driver subs but I would not let this stop you from purchasing it.

This sub is trully amazing at the price point (Aust$419). It has reasonable build quality at the price, weighs in at 18kg, moves lots of air, goes very low and very impressive at shaking the room with good impact. It also has user friendly controls on the top. I have been reading with interest some of the comments about modifications done. With all due respect to the other posts the mods may have been done totally in the dark and the fact they may have worked could be more due to luck than technically correct application of mods such as changing drivers. The insulation is a good thing because inside the standard sub is an inadequate thin sheet of polyfill which Sony probably intended to impress during audition at shops with very large rooms. I have built several subs and speakers using basic computer modelling so I know a little more about the effects of such mods. Increasing polyfill has the effect of increasing internal volume by up to 10-20% and soaking up internal standing waves which can be associated with boominess. Increasing volume will lower bass extension but reduce percieved bass around 50Hz, hence the positive comments about reducing excessive boom. But its better to have more boom than less because you can control this. Substituting any old driver in place of the standard will have dramatic effect, either good or bad. You need to find one that is OK in the small 35L cabinet. Sony has done an incredible job at getting the 12" to go so low in a relatively small enclosure, so there will be very few 12" drivers that can do the same. Many 12" drivers are designed for 60L+ boxes. Sony states the specification at 20hz but does not quote this properly because they do not state at what dB level, probably at -10dB which in real terms is about 25-28hz flat response or -3dB, thats still quite OK performance.

I am new to the h/t experience and I just bought this subwoofer. Can someone tell me how the carpet spikes are supposed to be used. I am pretty sure what to do with them but I would appreciate if someone cpuld help me out. Also is it better to use the polyfill panels or the loose stuff. If you use the loose stuff do you just pour it in the subwoofer.

Strength:

Big bang! for the buck(like atomic bomb), sound(goes really low), perfect temp sub until I have the money to buy a really high end sub, video sheilding(may come handy in the future).

Weakness:

None for the price, well one thing the factory cable.

Decided on this sub because of the reviews and they're not lying. Have been using this sub for almost a week now and I'm very happy with it. Haven't tried the polyfill thing yet because I think I'm satisfied with it and also I don't want to void my 10 year extended warranty for this(got it for a couple of $ hehe). Like other people, I find it a bit boomy at first but careful tweaking of the controls and placement made it less boomy. In my case I have a pair of bookshelf speakers which are a bit bass shy so I had to set the cut-off to around 120Hz. Can't just set the cut-off to 50Hz or else there would be a gap in the frequencies being reproduced. On the other hand if you have larger speakers then you could set the cut-off down to 50Hz which would make it a sub now not a woofer. I think what makes this sub good at such a low price is it's driver. Altough I think it's crappy it's still a 12" driver and the larger the driver lower the bass.

Decided on this sub because of the reviews and they're not lying. Have been using this sub for almost a week now and I'm very happy with it. At first I find it a bit boomy but a carefull tweaking of the controls made it less boommy. Haven't tried the polyfill thing yet because I'm satisfied with it and I dont want to void my 10 year extended warranty for this(HEHE), also I don't think it's neccessary because the contols would really help. In my case, I have a pair of bookshelf speakers that is a little bass shy so I had to set the cut-off to around 120Hz and the sub picks up the lower frequencies which my bookshelves can't reproduce. Can't just set the sub to cut-off at 50Hz or else there would be a gap in the frequencies being reproduced. On the other hand if you have larger speakers then you could set the cut-off to 50Hz which makes it a subwoofer now not a woofer. I think the thing that makes this sub good is the driver, it's 12" driver. Because the larger the driver the lower the bass it can reproduce.
