20 HZ for under $200 Sony is better name than KLH 12" woofer does not disappoint
Weakness:
Guess they make you buy Monster Cable when you see the rca connect cable. I added this to my slapped together HTS and am very happy with it. I could have bought the JBL PB 10 for 50 bucks more (it has a naked (no grill) speaker pointing right at the floor) anyway the Sony goes lower so lemme stay cheap I have: Item/Cost Denon 1802/398 Panasonic RP56/198 Infinity IL25/159 Infinity RS2000 Fronts/150 pair (old) Polk R10/80 for pair @ C.City Sony SAWM40 (paint peeler edition)/189 Now I know my whole system cost less than a good subwoofer but the blissfull joy that I get from hearing music and movies makes it worth every penny. I am no audiophile but I have heard things that were never there before! I am ecstatic! Would reccomend to family searching for tight bottom end! Similar Products Used: NONE |

having to mod the internal cabinet I purchased this subwoofer based on all the positive reveiws which I read on the audio sites, I am so very plesed with its performance, I did the mod with polyfill and she sounds great. the price is at a level which is affordable, we would all like Sunfire etc. Get real, snobbery in Hi fi makes me sick, who are you trying to impress? I havent been a big lover of Sony, but this sub does them proud, Similar Products Used: Jbl/ Bose |

Strength:
Deep bass output, truly a SUB woofer. Pre-out connection for those who dare to buy 2 of these units (I am jealous). Subwoofer level & low pass controls located on top of unit make it easier to set up. Outstanding value.
Weakness:
Output falls off rapidly below 25 hz (what do you want for $200!) Slightly boomy output most noticeable when listening to music (removing the woofer & lining the interior walls of the cabinet with batting smooths things out quite a bit) Provides plenty of distortion free volume in my room(15x20), but I suspect that it would have a hard time getting over 100db in a bigger room without distorting some. This unit has given me the impact I have always wanted from a subwoofer, but have never been able to afford. This sub puts out gobs of low frequency thump in the 30-45 hz range (right where most movie soundtracks need it) and has decent output down to around 25hz. Not to shabby for a unit priced under $200! For a moderate sized room this is more than enough sub to give movies all the kick you will need . Now there is no excuse not to have a subwoofer hooked up to your home theater- BIG BANG FOR THE BUCK! Look past the brand name and just buy it, it will more than exceed your expectations. Strength:
Price and low, deep bass
Weakness:
None The previous reviewer must a chip in his shoulder. You cannot compare a sub under $200 with subs costing 4 or 5 times more. Is the Sunfire 5 times better--no way. I added 20 ounces of poly fiberfill and made a big difference on the lowest frequencies--no more distortion!! Similar Products Used: First sub. Own Polk and JBL speakers. |

Good laugh with your friends

Too many to list I can''''''''t believe this sub has so many positive reviews! It just goes to show you how un-informed the average consumer is. I too used to be a brain washed Best Buy consumer. For a few hundred more dollars you can get a sub that will blow that sony piece of crap away. The people that own that sub and think it is good would be absolutely amazed if they owned a real sub like a Paradigm or Sunfire. That sony is such a turd it made me actually laugh out loud when I heard it. Similar Products Used: electronic fart machine |

Strength:
A low cost subwoofer.
Weakness:
Plastic cover on amp rattled. Good sub for the price. I use it to fill in the low end when listening to music. I''m not using it to get a big boom or exagerated low end. The only problem I had was with the plastic cover on the amp. It''s too thin and resonates in the 100 to 200 hz range. It had to be removed and strengthed. The other low cost sub I''ve used is a KLH which was only $100. I was not satisfied so I bought the Sony and I''m satisfied with it. Similar Products Used: KLH |

Deep bass, smaller footprint than others in its class.
Weakness:
A bit boomy, but alleviated by filling with polyfill Amazing Product at an affordable price I bought this and have it running off my subwoofer pre-out. Removed the driver and lined walls with 1 inch think fiberglass acoustical ceiling tile. I used Elmer''''s spray adhesive to stick it to the walls. I have demo''''d many subs in the under ~500 range though I have not heard any of the heavyweights like HSU or SVS. This sub is just as clean and responsive as the pb-10($350) and the pdr-12($400), though not as clean sounding as the ps-1000($500). So, it sounds better than or just as good as just about everything that can be had for under ~400. It took me a bit of tweaking but I am very satsfied with this until I can afford a high-end sub. none this sub is awesome for the price. have a cerwin vega that i paid 3 times as much for and this blows it away. i bought the sony to put in the basement, but this will now be my main sub in the living room. it was boomy at first but i added about an inch or so of polyfil around the inside and it rocks. no distortion at all, and it shakes and rattles the walls. and that is with the volume of the sub at halfway. this is definitely worth the low price. Sony has a winner. Similar Products Used: cerwin vega, bose |

Excellent value and performance.
Weakness:
A better quality subwoofer cable should have been included in the box. I bought this subwoofer @ Best Buy after reading all the reviews of it and because it was on sale at the time. Personally, I didn''t expect to get too much out of it. To say that I was pleasantly surprised by its performance vs. its cost is to greatly underestimate the value of this product. I''ve ran this subwoofer for the last 3 months without any modification whatsoever until recently. I saw that Walmart had a 20 oz. bag of polyfiber fill stuffing for $1.97 and purchased it. I made the mistake of initially stuffing the whole package into the box as it appeared that other owners had done. This was wrong and should be avoided. With a fully stuffed box, the output simply was not as loud or as good as I had hoped. In fact, when closing the box back up I knew that this would be the case as the box was so stuffed as to be compressed into a solid mass around the inside of the box. Obviously, my initial attempt simply lowered the amount of air space present in the box. I also purchased some spray adhesive and applied it but on second thought, it was not really necessary. I re-removed the woofer and removed about half of the polyfiber fill. That appears to have done the trick. The box response appears to be much better now and I don''t have to run it at as high a volume or set the crossover so high as I used to. I have also replaced the stock connector cable with a Acoustic Research 25'' subwoofer cable ($19.99, also @ Best Buy). I did notice a slight dropoff in response after doing that but there is much less noise or transient hum coming from the sub. My only regret about the cable purchase is that the cable is a bit too long for my taste. The stock cable, while flimsy and throwaway it may be, was still the perfect length for my purposes. If I had been able to get the subwoofer cable at 12'' at the price I paid, then that''s what I would have preferred. All in all it was perfect for my modest home theater setup but now I want to upgrade my front speakers too... I don''t think that I really feel the need to replace the woofer especially considering that I liked how it sounded without any modifications and the polyfill mod made it sound much better for so cheap. If I replace the woofer, it will only be because I happen to fry the thing, otherwise I''m fine with it. |
