Started out with 1,then added a 2nd,both on the backside of the room on each end of my sofa.My living room is open to the dining room and den.Very good price/performance ratio.Sony isn't known for their speakers but this one,and it's bigger sibling ( SA-WX900),are completely different animals.Almost like they were designed by a different company.Uses the Push-Pull configuration pioneered by M&K back in 1989. None of the booming bass you get with most other budget ones, including Sony's own.The HSU Ventriloquist VT-12 setup are my speakers.Overall I'm pleased with their performance.Running sine wave sweeps I get usable response down to around 26hz. |

Strength:
- taut bass that you can feel and hear - excellent build quality - ditto for the ergonomics - superb price
Weakness:
- still looking... I was in the market for a new sub after the amp on my old powered sub died. I listened to several models and even purchased more expensive JBL and Velodyne 12" powered subs. Both sounded good in the store (especially the velodyne) but I was underwhelmed once I got it home. I returned them and did a little research on the circuit city website. after reading good reviews of the sa-wx700 I decided to give it a try so I went to Etronics and ordered myself a copy (and saved $100). It arrived 3 business days later. I would have never dreamt of adding a Sony to my HT system but I've got to say this is the best $200 I've spent. Low, taut bass that you hear and feel. It will shake lose anything not securely bolted down, if that's your style. I use this with an all polk audio setup (2 FS towers for the L/R front, a center and 2 surrounds in back) and an HK AVR335, and use this system for both music and movies. After a little tuning I put it through it's paces on several of my favorite DVD's. It handled saving private ryan, matrix reloaded and revolutions, and all 3 LOTR films with ease. I've found that it does get a little muddy at the highest volumes (as do most subs) but that's not a problem as I never found a need to turn it up more than halfway. The cabinet is a sturdy piece of construction, not a hint of vibration. It accepts both speaker level and preamp inputs and has an additional preamp output for another sub (easily within my budget but I'm not that sadistic). The controls (with the exception of the power button) are located on the rear of the sub facing up and are easily adjustable without having to move the sub around. Overall, I haven't found any sub that can compete with this Sony model at this price, even at three times the price. Give credit to Sony for giving me a way to scare the neighbor's rat of a poodle. |

Strength:
* The price - a killer deal at $250 * Sub-sonic sound you can feel * Placement of controls * Hookup documentation * Energy Star auto-shutoff feature * Hidden location of heat sink * Forward-firing and down-firing woofers * Weight and construction of a quality sub
Weakness:
* Not enough reviews on this product * Doesn't come with seatbelts for the listener :-) Like other enthusiasts, I was reluctant to go with a Sony speaker. However after reading reviews from owners on the Circuit City website, I was sold! I had to try this sub out. I ordered it online on Sunday and received it yesterday (Tuesday - two days). Hookup was a cinch with easy to read guides with pictures for multiple configurations. The sub lets you choose from low-level or high-level input connections, and provides a phono output to daisy chain additional subs onto it. The sub also provides R and L speaker outputs. Sony hit the mark when they mounted the controls facing up near the top of the back of the AMP; not visible until you lean over it a little, but easy to get to. Very handy for adjusting the gain and cross-over frequency filter. The energy star compliant shut down, that can be left in auto or off mode is also very thoughtful for those concerned about leaving their amp on. As soon as I connected the sub, I scrolled the DVR to my recorded copy of Predator vs Alien, and skipped to the part where the temple was closing large stone doors and sliding heavy stone walls and floors. Let me tell you, the unheard sound adds a whole new dimension to the home theater experience, of being able to feel the action. I already have a great set of speakers, and sub-sonic effect was what I was after. This sub specs from 20Hz to 200Hz frequency response. It shakes the house. I haven't flipped the sub-boost switch on yet, I think I'll wait to install seatbelts on my lazy-Boy before I do that. Many high dollar $400 to $1800 dollar subs I looked at didn't compare to the features and/or frequency response that the Sony has. Also noticeable is the aesthetics of placing the heat sink underneath where it is out of site, and fanned by the motion of the down firing speaker, which is protected with a black heavy gauge screen guard. The forward firing speaker has a removable cover. Many other models had the heatsink hanging off the back requiring air-gap distance from a wall to allow air flow for proper cooling. This Sony design makes it's own air-flow from speaker movement. A very impressive sub in design, frequency response, and ergonomics. I can not think of anything I don't like about it. Similar Products Used: None - this is the first true sub-woofer (20-200Hz) that had specs and reviews worthy of being added to my home theater system. |

Strength:
Powerfull bass performance Down pull bass force dual woofer for stabilty and strength and bass production. easy crossover modification bass boot and reverse phase. O.-8% non distortion.
Weakness:
Ok box design needs a diffrent look. More amp power. binding post on the back for speaker connection would be much better. This sony subwoofer kicks major deep-low-bass. I use to have a jbl p-250 12"sub, but it does not compare to sony's low bass respond. I keep It at 80.0hz and my reciever is pionner (thx) and its set to 80.0hz. i dont like it boomy like the jbl can sound at times. The sony sub is not boomy just one major deep bass sub that can reach to 20.0hz.I got it at a-reat price. I keep my sub woofer about 10-12ft behind the couch where i sit-when I watch a movie and love the rumble efect when sitting down. Now i read reviews on putting a sub behind you---and some say not to cause it loses sound or you get vibration more then bass, Not true, if your a pro at speaker and reciever calibration like me. NON egotistical speaking :-) then you know it can sound damn good behind you or anywhere basically. Hell i am going to buy me another one :-) i hope they can make it more stronger though and more power add it. Strength:
Excellent Bass response Bass all the way down to 20HZ Smart placement of controls Accurate and tight bass Wonderful price tag
Weakness:
None. Ok would an audiophile really buy a Sony sub? He would if he wanted an affordable sub the goes all the way down to 20hz. Let me give you a brief history about the subs I've owned before this one. First there was a Polk PSW-303, a Polk PSW-505, a NHT SW10, JBL E250P, a Velodyne VPR-1200 and now finally the sony. The PSW-505 is the only one on the level of the Sony sub, the Polk just doesn't go as deep into the lower frequencies. Well the sony is definantly the heaviest of the bunch, it also provides the deepest bass out of any of my previous subs. This sub really does shake the walls, the good thing about it is that the bass is deep, accurate, and tight with no extra rumble. I'm not usually a fan of digital amplifier designs (you can think the JBL for that), but the Sony excels where the JBL did not. One of my favorite things about this sub is the convienent placement of the controls, they are face-up on the back making adjustments easy. The only downside of this sub is that it's not taken seriously because of it's name and price tag. I few audiophile buddies weren't convinced of this subs performance until I gave them a audition. The dual 10" woofer design provides bass you can hear and FEEL. Get over the Sony speaker stigma and enjoy the best sub under $1000. If you have a THX reciever or processor you need a sub that goes down to 20HZ for a true THX experience. Strength:
Very nice low end, not booming, very easy to hook up. Nice build quality. Great Value
Weakness:
Weak directions, poor markings on cut off frequency control. Large Box for proformance delivered. I never thought I needed a sub till my friend hooked up his B&W Sub. The B&W is great but out of my price range. The sony SA-WX700 sounds almost as good only giving up ultimate high volume. For the price of the B&W I could have two sonys that should make up the volume difference and have a ton of money left over. Has anyone used two of the SA-WA700s in the same system? Strength:
tight bass, low cost, push pull design, good cabinet, does not buzz or rattle. Forward firing good for room with carpet.
Weakness:
Warranty, only 1 year. Option of Real wood color would be a major improvement in appearance. Seemed like a bargain, so I took a chance based on limited reviews. My house being on a concrete slab, I actually ended up buying 2 of these subs because I wanted more punch than one could put out. It's also such a good deal, 2 cost way less than all of the others I was looking at. I also have a long large room. My front mains have 10" drivers and this sub blended very well after getting the placement and set-up right. I was worried about boominess and I had some until I got the placement correct. Also, don't overdrive the sub and you won't have a problem. I only have the level turned up 1/4 of the way on the sub. My receiver sub balance level on my denon is at max 12 (not LFE or Ext.) I have the LFE set at - 10 and the Ext. set at 0. Each sub independently hits 85 db with sound and vision test tones. with both on it is higher 88 - 89 db and it sounds great with HT and music. I didn't have any sub before and I can now hear so much more in the very low HZ that I never heard before. My mains will go down to about 35 HZ and in my set-up, I know the subs are going down to at least 20 HZ as advertised although I do not have the tools to measure at this time. My wife and I were quite happy with our system before the subs. Now even she says it is a major improvement and she isn't really an audio nut. She is also tolerating the two new black cubes in our room, although she has plans to dress them up to something a little more pleasing to the eye. If your looking for a tight bass sub at a cheap price, you won't go wrong with this sub Similar Products Used: none |

sound, power, down to 20, build quality, digital amp, two 10's, $182 for all this-crazy man!
Weakness:
every other sub manufacturer needs to look at this sub- should set the curve I bought this sub over a year ago and the more I hear it the more I like it. It has a acoustic-suspension design making it more accurate than ported subs. When I first got it I was disappointed, but that was due to my lack on knowledge on sub woofer set up/placement. I have some polk lsi15's going thru this to an onkyo tx-8511 reciever /w some bose 301v's thru a velodyne cht 12 on the other channel. I can honestly say it does go down to 20, is very musical- so much I don't use it for movies- and hits HARD. I've used many subwoofers over the years and spent lots of money, so I lucked out getting this thing. You can but four of these for one svs, and the quality/power will decimate the svs. Similar Products Used: bose, velodyne, polk, sony, jensen |

Excellent tight low bass. Variable gain and crossover. Low-Level + High-Level inputs. Phase reversing. Auto-off.
Weakness:
It croaked after 11 months of moderate use! I'm bummed! Well, I was in love with this sub. It seemed to be one of the greatest deals on the planet for value/performance. It can keep up with subs that cost 3x as much...or so it seemed. 11 months of use and it cratered and that is with moderate use. The gain was only 1/3 of the way turned up. Woe is me! Strength:
Seems to go pretty low. (although I don't have any means of measuring how low) Very powerful (the 250 watt rating seems true) Seems quite musical to me, no booming. Controls mounted towards the top on back, aiming up. output for additional subwoofer
Weakness:
spring terminals for speaker level connections Only 1 mono line level input. (good only for receiver or pre with a subwoofer out connection) Took a chance and ordered on eBay after reading the few reviews that were here. Can't believe what a great sub it is for the money. I'm working it pretty hard. Bass from my main speakers is crossed over to the sub at 60hz. It also handles anything under 100hz from my center and surround speakers. Plus the low frequency channel on Dolby Digital. I put on the beginning of "Independance Day" (I like the moonquake and when the big spaceship flies overhead) and turned the volume up enough for VERY impressive demo. The sub handled everything without complaint. Stuff fell off of my speakers and shelf. Sounds good with music to me. None of the boominess I've heard in the previous Sony subs. Don't let the fact that it looks almost the same as the older ones scare you away from an audition. My mains handle around 250 watts and are powered by a 385 WPC Carver amp. I turned up some dance music to the point where my mains were sounding a little stressed. The $200.00 Sony sub was able to keep up without distorting or bottoming. The only other sub I've owned was one of those 350 watt, 15" JBL subs that broke after about a week and were selling really cheap. The Sony sounds way more musical and seems to go down lower than the JBL did when it was working. I'd be very curious to see what people with more subwoofer experience have to say about this sub, so if you buy one write a review!!! Really does seem like a HUGE bang for the buck to me.
