I took a chance and bought this unit without audition. I replaced my velodyne f1200r (12"). Yes, this thing is huge, but since I am the wife factor, size is not an issue. I hooked it up via line/level inputs. I am very impressed. Perhaps it's just the difference of going to an 18" driver, but let me say..."wow". I paid $75.oo extra for shipping, and received it in two days. It was double boxed and with no visible damage to the packaging. The only disappointment is the cabinet. I thought one call advertised the black woodgrain cab with the granite look trim on the bottom, (like my old f1200). Instead the cab is just plain black, no granite trim....not bad, just not entirely what I expected. The sound is unbelievable for HT and music listening...very tight and clean. I don't see how you could do better for the price. I thought I had a nice sub with the F1200, but this is a difference you can "feel", literally. New features from my old sub include a phase switch, auto on/off (works very well and is defeatable). The remote has the same features, it just looks nicer, and the batterey cover is not as flimsy as my old one. If you are hesitating, don't...it's worth every penney. |

Boy oh boy. I think this time I went way too far. The F1800XR plays DEEP! I once heard the F1800R at a local hometheater shop, and this unit is not much different in terms of IMPACT. Unless your planning to shake the walls of your neighbors down the street, this is all you will need. The HGS-18 is faster and gives a little more in the area of impact, but at a price that is more then doubled that of the F1800XR. I bought the unit from Onecall in Washington, after calling up Velodyne and confirming the validity of this model. I received the unit two days later in perfect condition. I am using this sub to replace my ULD-15 and Def. Tech. PF1500. These two subs together never went as low as the F1800XR. This is one awsome sub. Did I mention that it plays DEEP! How am I going too far? I'm seriously thinking about Buying another one just to keep on had in case they stop making them. At $936 a pop, it is the best investment you can make for your hometheater system. And I don't think you can ever outgrow this sub. I give it six and a-half stars. |

Strength:
price for comparable size units, remote control This thing shakes my 2200sf house easily, even at very low volume(3-5).. Overkill!! But extremely cool. Adds so much to home theatre. I have never owned one before so I cannot compare it. I will however recommend it!!!!! Similar Products Used: none |

Weakness:
Tough to audition. An excellent unit for the price. As noted previously, Velodyne makes the unit for One Call and is a true Velodyne product. Better in home theater than music as it is a bit boomy...but then, it just may be too much bass for me personally - I'll have to experiment with different placements in the room. It truly made my home theater system come alive as Godzilla stomped through the room! |

Excellent Price/Performance Ratio. Easy interfaces.
Weakness:
Needstobematched to the speakers I purchased the F1800XR as a subwoofer to use in an audio only system. The system includes Accoustat 3 elctrostatics with the big Adcom mono-blocks and a Sunfire tube pre-amp with an Adcom CD. I have a F1800R (same driver with the 600 watt amp and balanced inputs/outputs) that I use in a seperate home theater that I tried first. I found that the level of the F1800R was always set very low (1-2) to match the electrostatics (I am running 900 watts per side to them to get concert levels). I decided to buy the F1800XR as it seemed the lower power would match well and the driver appears to be the same. When I received the unit it had been dropped by FedEx and one of the rear corners was crushed. It did not appear to affect the sound and I got a $250 credit from OneCall (Net price was $750). I have been very satisfied with the overall sound. The bass is tight and integrates well with the electrostatics. I believe that the higher power (of the F1800R)is good in a theater where the mains are more efficient, but you really have to listen at VERY high volumes to hear the difference. I am running the sensitivity at about 4 and it never seems to distort or strain in a 5000 cubic foot space. Overall I would say this is a great value and probably the best serious subwoofer buy available. Similar Products Used: Velodyne F1800R |

I just spoke to Velodyne about the F1800XR, and was told that this sub is 100% legit. They told me that it was basically a FSR-18 with the FSR-15 amp. I just ordered the sub from onecall. I can't wait until I get it. I have a ULD-15 right now, if this F1800XR is as good as I'm hoping, I can finally get rid of that awsome coffee table. Come to think about it, I'll use it for my surrounds. I'll give another review after the sub gets here and I've broken it in. |
