Strength:

Great sound!! Compared it to other subwoofers (Cerwin Vega, M&K, JBL), and the sound is much more clean and crisp. Where the other subwoofers sometimes just rumble, my Velodyne gives you the actual sounds. Mine is hooked up to a Yamaha 995, and the rest of the surround sound system are Klipsch; I'm very impressed with the Velo, and thoroughly recommend it.

Weakness:

After three months, mine developed a pop and then a buzzing sound. Tweeter fixed it once (cracked solder), then when it happened again they took it back and ordered a new amp. and woofer from Velodyne (all under warranty).

Great sound - expensive but you can find deals. The Velo has the best sub sound I've found so far, with very low distortion. The casing is pretty big, and it's a dull black woodgrain (i.e. like most subs, it's a little obtrusive and not particularly attractive, but mine's hidden in a cabinet).

Thoroughly recommend this product.

Strength:

Sound quality and depth for a 12" driver.

Weakness:

Crossover; air displacement

This sub is mated with ARC Classic 60, ARC LS2B, and Acoustat 2+2 - a very detailed and articulate system with fast electrostatic speakers. 100% audio use. I hesitated to match a less expensive sub, but yearned for that bottom-end and could not afford a high-end sub such as the HSG series.

I initially used the built in crossover. After 30 minutes of relocating and tweaking the phase/volume/xover I hadn't heard one note that sounded like 'music.' The previous owner had the same problem and warned me before purchasing.

My next step was to bypass the internal xover and use a Mirage LX-1 active xover (not a real high-end crossover, but not junk either). Within 5 minutes I started hearing music. Over the next few weeks I tweaked placement and all settings.

Sometime after identifying and resolving the crossove problem I spoke with a tech at SoundDesign (San Diego). He mentioned, without my prompting, that they build custom xovers for this sub because the internal xover is weak.

The final result was a very satisfactory blend with the Acoustats (running full range). At any price this was a significant improvement to the system, but for $400 I was quite impressed. Kick-drums, electric bass and bottom octaves of the piano are are tight and detailed. I only wish the SPL was higher. Increasing the volume higher than the current setting eliminates the seamless blending that I'm currently getting. The room is 14'x17'x8'. It does vibrate the room and sometimes sets up an obnoxious resonance, but I think this is the room.

BTW-I did have a problem that was covered by warranty. The blue power LED was flickering on and off while the sub erratically emitted a low-level distortion sound. The tech fixed it in-house after consulting with Velodyne. According to him he unsoldered the LED connection and reconnected to a different place (before or after the transformer or something like that). Velodyne was aware of the problem and had made the change sometime during the production run. This is not the amp hum mentioned elsewhere and I have not experienced that problem.

I purchased the FSX-12 after returning a Velodyne VA-1250X due to it's poor musical performance. The dealer suggetested the VA-1250X after I stated that I would like a sub that is good with music as well as video. Needless to say, the 1250 was terrible with music. It was muddy and slow and was about the size of the Titanic. I forked out another $150 and got into a FSX-12 for $950. I liked it's performance with music but it really lacked in the video department. It struggled to fill a 15 x 18 room with strong bass response and after about a half hour of Top Gun, it stopped working. It was dead. I have now returned the FSX and was able to demo a Paradigm 1200 from another dealer. I was amazed. For $550 this is an incredible buy. For videos, it blew me away with strong, clear bass and was quite tight in the music department. Musically it wasn't as tight as the FSX but overall it was excellent. It seems that many other companies are moving forward where Velodyne started. I was very disappointed to learn that Velodyne has also made it into the mass market stores via Circuit City. If you think that Velodyne is the only direction to look for a sub, as I was, do yourself a favor and explore other options. I think you will realize that there are great overall products out there (Paradigm) without the high Velodyne price tag.

Strength:

Clean Solid Bass response till 20HZ

Weakness:

Not quite as articulate as NHT3 or Paradigm

At the $750 to $850 price range the FSX12 is a superb sub. It does well on just about any piece video or music with very good output down to 20 hrz. Its trade offs are it doesn't reproduce the sound of big kick or kettle drums with as much tighness as the Paradigm Servo15 or Nht3 but costs less than these and is not as big. However in a sub costing around the 750 to 900 dollar range I have not heard one play as deep, clean, nor as loud. It fills my home theatre room with overwelming bass even to the point the whole house vibrates if I set its volume up to high. On instraments like organs and bass gutiars its sound is laid back, well defined and natural. I feel its the best bargain sub money can buy.

i just got this sub the other day and its it sounds pretty darn good. its the same as the fsr-12 but it doesn't come with a remote, but hey, i'm over it. i got it at a pretty good price, its listed at 1199.00 and i got it for 750.00. it is one of the servo contolled subs and it goes down to 20 hz. it has the direct sub switch for dts and ac-3. i'm replacing my old va-1210 and the difference is like night and day. i highly recommend this sub, and i also recommend the energy es-8 if you are on a budget. also, rel has a 1000.00 sub thats sounds awesome. and definitive technology has a 700.00 sub which just recieved a 93 in the new home theater magazine. anyways the fsr series that velodyne produces are great subs, you should take a look at them.

Weakness:

Size and is very fragile.

This sub is incredible. I got this from a friend used for $300 so I got a incredible bargain. It is used and needed a new capaciter which whill cost me about $50 but it is still worth it. My system is as follows:
-Yamaha RX-V596 Receiver
-Yamaha CDC-575 CD Player
-Sony DVP-S360 DVD Player
-Paradigm PDR-12 Sub
-Paradigm Studio 20's (Mains) with matching center channel speaker
-Paradigm Mini Monitors Rears
I wanted to get a velodyne but was concerned about the cost. This sub is usually $1200. I wanted to get a HGS but could not afford it. My friend recommended me buying his but I was concerned about the low amplification. My PDR-12 has 110 watts and I wanted something that could go lower and louder. The FXR-12 only has 120 watts. It uses every ounce of power. This sub can easily hit 20 Hz. It even produces notes you can feel but not hear. If you listen to "Men In Black" whenever they turn off their car their is a low rumble. My whole room shakes with this sub. I now have to rewatch all my movies. With this sub it is a whole new experience watching movies. I watch gladiator with this sub and it was amazing how much more I heard. For those of you out their that thought this sub didn't perform to your standards, try placing it somewhere else in the room. Placement can make or break a sub. I tried two other places before I found the perfect spot. For advice on placement email me. As far a music goes, it isn't quite as good. I prefer my music to be more boomy and that is what the PDR-12 does, because it has ports. I now have both subs in my room that is approximately 15 x 20. I have the cut off on the PDR-12 so that it fills in the mid to high bass and it sounds awesome. The FXR-12 is a bit large and hard to find a good corner to put it in but the newer and almost exact same model, the FSR-12, is smaller and easier. Velodyne subs are very fragile and cannot be moved when on because of the servo. I gave it a 5 on value because I paid $300. I would give it a 4 if I had to pay $1200 but it would still be worth it.
