Strength:

Serious bass punch

Just picked up this puppy to compliment my B&W 604s. Can't believe I've actually lived w/o a sub for so many years. The stage presence is incredible! Now I can really feel the low end bass with pure clarity. A great compliment for home theater and music. It makes my house shake on certain Pink Floyd tracks and of course the entrance of the T-Rex in Jurassic Park is something everyone should experience.

For a small box this really delivers the goods.

Strength:

This puppy plays low and loud

Weakness:

Reliability I am on my second one.Replaced by retailer without a lot of hassle. Velodyne repeat!!!! Velodyne was of no help whatsoever. The auto on never worked properly in either unit and without notice at any time the unit would let out a big thump. No thumps in second unit but the auto on still does not work. Will not buy another Velodyne.

One star for when it works it's fine.

I recently purchased my first Velodyne Sub after a few years of procrastination. And I must say I am glad I finally did. This sub plays really low, it shines in home theatre applications and has quite a bit of punch musically as well. I am very pleased with it and after auditioning the VA1012x, the CT series, and Paradigm subs, I am extremely pleased. You do get what you pay for, and if you are willing to pay you won't be disappointed. This sub is not made to fill very large rooms with deafening bass, yet it does quite well. I have it in the basement of my home, approx. 22' by 14' and it really kicks. It matches my mains nicely, Boston VR 35's and I recommend it highly. Thinking about one, you may consider checking E-bay, who knows, might get lucky and save a few hundred bucks.

I have been using a $350 Pioneer sub 100. Upgraded to the Velodyne HGS 10 one month ago. Paid $950 from Sound Advice. Only one problem. When plugging in to socket big sparks sprayed out like a fire hydrandt on a hot Sunday afternoon. The unit works very well w/ my NHT 2.5i's, and Yamaha 2095 receiver. Looks great, in a small package. Tight bass response, is what turns me on and this unit delivers. Takes up very little space, unlike some units. Still wondering how it compares to Paradigme Servo 15 though? I hope to compare soon. If aynone has gone to the Servo after checking out the HGS 10 let me know. I recomend this big time. However some of these reviews have me concerned.

Five months ago I auditioned: Velo. HSG-10B, HGS-12B, and the Sunfire II, Sig. Subs. I like to spend 50% listening to music and 50% watching movies. Based on size and $$, I purchased the HGS-10B. Sunfire was just (1) to expensive and (2) where I audition the Sunfire subs the dealer failed to setup and placed both subs correctly.
I found Velo sub very user friendly, this sub was not placement sensitive in my living room, it sounded awesome in both HT or in music applications. I suspect the Sunfire was more difficult to setup and it is more placement dependant . The big question should be RELIABILITY?? This is what I found out, the hard way……

When I got home and installed my HGS-10 it took about 1 min. to blow up. I did not even got a chance to go into speaker setup mode and set the sub option to ON! in my A/V receiver. When I removed the AC cord sparks flew out of the AC outlet. My dealer replaced it immediately. The second HGS-10 worked great. Everyone that visited us left with their jaws wide open for about three months. One night my wife was watching Ally McBeale she tough we were under a nuclear attack! The sub started making loud noises like one of those instruments that measure radiation. After talking to Velo for awhile they acknowledged initial technical difficulties with the HGS-10. In the process they convinced me to upgrade to HGS-12. According to them, the HGS-12 works more efficiently, sounds better and they have not experienced any premature failures. I went back to my dealer they took back my HGS-10 no question asked and I paid more money for the upgrade.

HGS-12 was definitely an improvement. Except, for it made a faint noise, like a aquarium air pump which is how I figured out it never turned off. I took it back to the dealer and got my forth one (2nd HGS-12). I plugged it in and nothing happened. That was it for me. I took it back and got my money back. Based on my experience have serious long term reliability concerns.

Strength:

Powerful, smooth bass

Weakness:

For what a 10" woofer can do...none. Kind of expensive, but I was able to get the HGS-10 for the Sunfire's price.

I have a big room, but little space for a subwoofer in my open floor plan house. As much as I'd love to get a 15-18" floor pounder, it's just not gonna work with my room (or my wife!). So, when I got tired of the limited output my NHT subwoofer could crank, it was time to find the best among the small, high power subwoofers available today. I compared the Sunfire True Subwoofer Mark II and the Velodyne HGS-10.

The Sunfire certainly can belt out the bass for such a small package, but it came across as "loose and boomy" during my demo. I fooled with it as much as I could, but I could never describe it's performance on music as smooth and articulate. Big movie booms sure were impressive, though.

The Velodyne HGS-10 seems the best of both worlds to me. It's performance on music was just great in the demo room and in my room. It blends beautifully with my NHTs (using cross over bypass and letting my receiver handle the high pass filtering) and really lets the bass notes stand out. I can actually crank up the bass and really hear the notes versus the "bass soup" I got out of my NHT subwoofer when pushed. "Stop Making Sense" by the Talking Heads (DVD) sounds great through the HGS-10. On big movie booms, you get as good a boom as you can from a 10" woofer driven by lots of amplifier power.
